  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2021 Kia K5 vs 2021 G70

Did you expect us to read your mind about which model you wanted?

I wonder if anyone on this forum would take anything less...:grinlaugh:

AWD is now mandatory for me being up in the great white north... That and good power, sporty drive...

Any pointers about how and where to lube? I haven't had the sunroof rattle yet; but I only passed 6k miles. Definitely want to stay ahead in terms of preventative maintenance.
Basically there is this trim around the glass where it comes in contact with the sheet metal; that is where a lot of squeaking comes from.

TF is your problem, I just wanted to point this out because the GT is the one enthusiasts want. Who the f%ck cares that a 180 hp family sedan has AWD if it's not available on the performance trim?

Yeah there's quite a lot of data there. The reason the panoramic sunroof isn't in the G90 is because of all the issues that the DH sedan owners experienced. The panoramic sunroof is manufactured by a supplier and delivered installed in Hyundai vehicles as a unit.

In any case:
  • I'm glad yours has been problem free!
  • Hyundai isn't the only one with Panoramic roof problems (just google Mercedes Panoramic Sunroof problems)
  • They truly are awesome in terms of the airy feeling they contribute; they open up the entire interior. I never had anyone get into my sedan who didn't compliment how nice it was
  • Mine was super quiet for the first 10,000 miles
  • Basically you have to keep the seals lubed
  • Even with that, there was a rattle that some folks figured out how to fix that I never got fixed
  • Some folks had theirs replaced multiple times
I'm on my third car with one and no problems at all. I never open them though so that may make a difference.

Tell us more about what’s in your mind, Mr. Enthusiast. Oh, by the way, everybody here is a car nut and everybody here has different tastes.

The upcoming K5 looks really nice and definitely seems like a lot of car for the money. I see it taking sales from the Camry and Accord (assuming similar interior and trunk volumes), especially for those that want something a bit sportier.
For many however, the FWD (or lack of AWD with the larger motor, if that remains true) will be a deal breaker. Still, there's millions of FWD sales, so still good business for Kia.

The G70 and upcoming K5 are, at their core, not comparable vehicles. Sure, they come from the same parent company, but one is an agile sports sedan and one is a family sedan that happens to be offered with a semi-powerful engine and looks nice. I can guarantee you with 1000% certainty that the G70 will have a higher quality interior, be far better to drive - especially spiritedly - and give you just as much bang for the buck, albeit in a different way.

Also, even if AWD were offered with the K5’s GT trim, it would more than likely still be a FWD-biased system. That, coupled with the additional weight it adds, wouldn’t add up to what I’d call a sports sedan.

i still think the sonata looks better in and out.

Huh. I could have sworn Kia said they'd offer the K5 with the 2.5t paired with AWD, along with the Sonata N-line... But upon further research, it looks like both are only FWD when paired with that engine. Dumb.

Kia/Hyundai didn't, the journalists did by leaving the statement ambiguous: 2.5l and AWD available, yes, but not together!

Your right, but after looking at the Sonata's interior, it's pretty dang close. So I'm assuming the K5 will be similar.

The exterior though, my personal tastes think the G70 is the best looking sedan out there.

No doubt the new Sonata and Optima have very nice interiors, but I’m referring to more than just looks here - it’s the driving dynamics that aren’t comparable. In my experience, if someone is looking for a sports sedan experience they likely aren’t cross shopping a FWD family sedan. Obviously that’s not the case for everyone, but what you’re paying for with the G70 on top of the interior/exterior designs is the way it drives - acceleration, handling, steering feel, suspension, etc. That’s why I don’t consider these cars comparable.

Agreed on all points. The one advantage the Optima and Sonata have over the G70 is interior space (and maybe price, though I imagine the GT or N-Line won't be cheap). But you can get that with any FWD family sedan.

Even if the Optima GT got AWD, it would still be an on-demand Haldex system which keeps it FWD until it loses traction, and therefore inferior to the RWD feel and performance of the G70.

Totally agreed - the G70's interior certainly isn't large. My first car was a 2012 Sonata, and it's always felt a class size bigger inside than its competitors.

As far as price, I'd bet the GT and N-Line will start at around 35k.

After all, let's be honest, Genesis hasn't really lived up to the promises it made for the majority of us. We obviously trust the parent company and aren't brand snobs. The K5 looks like a better-deal and maybe a slightly better package than the new G70. Plus, we know that the K5 will sell like hotcakes so market support will be STRONG.

Edit: only flaw I potentially see is missing cooled seats.
My Optima SX-L's had cooled seats. Surely they'll offer them in the K5.

I see a pretty big flaw....

FWD based platform
Doesn't bother me at all. I've had Acuras and Kias and other FWD's over the past few years, and they drive and handle fine. Most people could drive one and not be able to tell you which wheels are driven. But then, they're apparently going to have AWD available, too.
