If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 3.8 tech vs 4.6

thanks bud, been reading over this forum researching as much as I can. Just thought that maybe someone might have a quick short list right off the top of their head.

The reason for keeping within my budget isnt because I cant afford to go higher, but thinking if the car is good and reliable, then why not save a little dough where I can. Seems the smart choice to me. We're not hurting for cash flow at all, just being smart.

My main reason for upgrading is for room and comfort. Im sick of a manual transmission and the small car. While we do also have an odyssey touring minivan, having a bigger car will be very handy because I have 3 kids under 4.5 years old. Cant throw them in the back of my current car....however the trunk has crossed my mind a few times ;)

My current 2005 TDI has 310,000+ kms on it now. if I can save 10 grand by finding one with a little higher miles on it, AND its good and reliable, then why not...

In that case, start looking for how to budget 4 quality snow tires for this thing too.
Good luck!

Yep, good point and also a good set of new tires (not snow) will set you back from 700.00 to 1200.00 U. S. drive out cost.

Im lucky tires are the least of my worries. I have a friend that owns his own tire shop here Canada. My plan if i get one of these would be to use stock rims for winters (with snows on them) and get aftermarket wheels for summer (dont worry not childish punk blingy cheezy wheels)

Given the angst you're going through over making this purchase, may I make a suggestion? Instead of obsessing over the virtues of a USED 3.8 vs.4.6, how about a brand-spanking-new Sonata, loaded to the gills, for less money than either of the above. It's a nice car, really.

because its not as "cool" and "mysterious"...teehee, all kidding aside, Im just keeping my eyes peeled for a 4.6 tech. When i find one I'll probably go for it...if it passes my inspection ;)

Personally, I believe your focusing on the wrong issue in trying to decide if you buy any Genesis. My question to you is-does the Genesis make your heart beat faster and your blood boil! If it does, gas mileage should be at the bottom of the list. My 4.6 gets 26 mpg. My V8 Rocks. Go drive both and you will make your own decision. At 55, hit the throttle and you will see why many of us bought the 4.6. The reality is that the mileage between the 3.8 and 4.6 is about 2 bucks difference and loads of passion per tank.

If you read through all the threads on this forum, what you will find is very few people are unhappy with their Genesis. V6 or V8, there is very little buyer's remorse here. Almost everybody loves this car.

The way I see it, if you want the biggest bang for your buck, get a base V6 (or V6 with Premium Package). For not much more than a top-of-the-line Camry or Accord, you are stepping up to a truly wonderful luxury car.

But if your plan is to load up the V6 with every option, including the Technology Package, I recommend you take a good look at the V8. For just $2000 more, not only do you get 33% more power, but also some extras you don't get on the V6: the ZF transmission, electro-hydraulic power steering, chrome bodyside moldings, illuminated door sill plates, woodgrain trim on the steering wheel, and auto-dimming outside mirrors.

But either way, V6 or V8, the Hyundai Genesis is your best luxury car value.

And best of all, the Automatic Cruise Control! It's one of the best "sleeper" options on the car!

Thanks for the response!

Hmm, yes Im mostly HWY driving (Ontario Can). Actually more accurately 99% with the 1% just from my house 8 km to the hwy.

That being said, for real world numbers, can anyone provide how many Liters the tank size is and how many kms one can get on a tank (from full to just when the light comes on)....know what I mean? This is how I drive my current car and I'm trying to see how much extra this thing (either 3.8 or 4.6) would cost me per month.

Currently drive a VW diesel, so obviously Im never going to get to those numbers, but Im ok with another 100 bucks a month in fuel, for the beauty of comfort and room :).

Thanks again folks!

I had basically the same commute for the first 2 years I owned my 2009 4.6 .. On the highway I consistently returned 27 MPG per tank ... I found the perfect speed to return that mileage was 71 MPH. (I got a little lower MPG at 65). As there was no traffic I used cruise most of the time.

If you are driving highway the 4.6 returns GREAT economy....

I don't commute anymore more 90% of my drive is now local in heavy city traffic and I get about 20. (spirited/frustrated use of the go pedal).

I chose the V6 Tech package after driving both. My decision was based on several aspects. I drove both the V8 and V6 and was in-love with the 4.6 power but found the V6 to be not bad (V8 made a bigger smile)... The V6 with Tech was the color I liked while they had just sold the same color V8. Next I thought the 3.8 liter would get much better gas mileage (appears that I was wrong) but I can get up to 29 MPG on the highway.
I love my V6 but I do wish I had waited and got the V8. That power and responsiveness is intoxicating. IMHO I would wait to find the V8 tech package and never look back.
Best Regards,

I got the 3.8 Tech package after test driving both it and the 4.6. I would have liked to have had the couple extra things the 4.6 gives you, dimming outside mirrors, illuminated scuff plate, etc. but I decided they weren't that important. Since I got the Tech. package, I did get everytrhing else. I do like my gadgets. I decided on the 3.8 based on gas mileage and cost. Even though the gas mileage based on the numbers doesn't amount to that much, it does add up if you drive a lot of miles which I do. The 4.6 at $2000 more than the 3.8 is a great value and worth more than the $2000 it cost IMO. However in my case the $2000 was important.

Another consideration was ride quality. Based on my test drives I didn't notice any real difference in the ride but read on here extensively that the 3.8 had the better ride. All the ride discussion on here really had me concerned. After 3,000 miles now on my car,I think the car rides like a dream. I think I probably would have concluded the same thing about the 4.6.

I've found the 3.8 has all the power I need. It moves when I need it to move. My car before the Genesis was an Acura TL which had a 3.2 V6. So the 3.8 Genesis is a big step up in hp for me. I have no regrets about choosing the 3.8.

Thanks again guys. Im still leaning towards the 4.6 because Im the type where I like to have "everything". I looked at a brand new 4.6 yesterday in silver/black....and was beautiful. BUT the price out the door for this 2011 was 59G's!!! EEKS, Im sure I can find a better deal than that. Will try for a used lower mileage 2010, that should save 10-15K right there.

Quick question for confirmation, there is only 1 version of the 4.6 which is FULLY loaded with everything right? Meaning If I get a 4.6, then I get all the bells/whistles etc.

2011 4.6 included everything. 2010 and earlier did not, the tech pkg was an option which included a lot of stuff. Also the adaptive cruise control I think was not included on the base 4.6 for 2009 and 2010 . The adaptive cruise is great and we use it everyday commuting.

As of 2010 there was only one version of the 4.6 in Canada. In 2009 there were two versions - with and without the Tech package.
59G's out the door? You must be kidding. Go to another dealer! That's like full MSRP! Look for a 2010 and save big time.

Yah crazy eh? Thats what i thought. This was in Ontario, north of Toronto.

Another assumption, the easiest way I;ve been telling if the car has TECH, is the navigation "jog" dial bye the arm rest. With that its TECH, without is Base...right?

That is correct for the V8 model.

Oops! I meant "Adaptive Cruise Control"! :)

59k, are you sure it was not the Equus? The list of the 4.6 was 43k. Go to another dealer.

Hi guys, new here thinking about picking up a used genesis sedan. I have a pretty long commute daily (160kms round trip or 100miles), so for fuel economy I think the 3.8 is the better choice for me, but I like the feature set of the 4.6L's.

If I look for a 3.8 TECH, would I essentially be getting everything the 4.6 has? Really would like to have all the bells and whistles etc. (17 speaker systems etc).

thanks folks.

PS - I found a higer mileage 3.8 tech for sale, but it has 110,000 KMS on it. So I assume the manufacturers warranty is done, but are these proving to be pretty reliable cars?

I get an average of 27.3 - 28 MPG with my V-8. That's with a lead foot and Modds. (see pic in my profile)
