  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello All ! I am in the market for one of these cars. I just sold a 2005 BMW Z4 with a 2.5 185hp car. I plan on keeping either the 20. or 3.8 in stock with no mods. Are both of these motors reliable? Thats important to me. I guess coming from a 185 hp BMW, the 2.0 would have plenty of power, and the 3.8 a screamer. Which one should I get?? THANKS !!!

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. Both motors are reliable as far as I know. However, if you're planning on keeping the car for a long time - I would imagine the naturally aspirated V6 would be the better choice. But either one should be fine - especially if you're not modifying it. The 2.0 probably WOULD be fine for you. Are you looking to buy new or used?

Actually, I own both engines. Each one is great. Do some test driving and choose your favorite.

Hi glad I saw this question. I would like to park my gen1 sedan for awhile and get into a coupe

Here is the million dollar question is it safe to buy with more than 100k miles or so? I am also interested in manual drive (very hard to find in my area!)

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Ambush

No car is safe to buy with 100,000 miles on the clock and no warranty.

I will have to beg to differ on that. I purchased 2 Toyotas from the Toyota dealer with right at 100k miles. I have never had a Toyota let me down. They are miles ahead of any car IMHO as far as engine design. As long as you take care of it it will take care of you. They both had no warranty too. I drove them both until 250k miles! No issues. I was just wondering since the Gennys are so new to the market.

Maybe you forgot about the Toyota engine sludge nightmares? Just Google it.

The bottom line is that many things can go belly up on a car with over 100,000 miles on the ticker. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Why go high mileage when there are so many lower mileage examples being sold in the Coupe?

As far as reliability goes, I had a BK1 Gen Coupe 2.0T and that thing was an absolute nightmare. Went through a motor, a gearbox, and so very many wheel bearings and struts. Motor went shortly after I purchased it at around 120k km (Purchased at 107k km), and the gearbox just before i sold it at around 135k km, fixed at 142k km. Car was sold at 148k km. I Stage 1 tuned AFTER the motor went, and when I went to a solid flywheel the gearbox went.

Lots of people have coupes without issues, but I would personally go with the 3.8 NA motor, and a lower mileage car. With a sports coupe especially, you just don't know what you're getting at higher mileage, and a turbo vehicle may not have been properly taken care of, as there is more maintenance that you are supposed to do and be aware of on a turbo car.

I'm convinced that the person who had the car before me was pretty hard on the car, so I can't 100% blame the car, and I did enjoy my car when it worked. Just some things to keep in mind, as the coupe is notorious for gearbox issues in the manual transmissions.

Yup. 2001 was bad. Glad I never had that year. Hehehe
But I understand what you are saying.
Just want to stay on a budget basically.

So glad I see you guys post. I am sorry you had to go through this. I guess I will change my mind about looking at it.

Don't laugh. Just price caught my eye.

Link was taken down by the user, how much was it and what was the mileage? If it was really cheap I'd be concerned about rebuilt titles and the like. For any used sports car (or used car in general really), I'd def get a history report on the vehicle. Doesn't always show everything, but it's better than nothing.

I have the V-6, AT, the car moves ok, just leaving the AT in AT mode, but using the paddle shifters make a big difference, have autocross the car a couple of times and it really goes..

It was a 2010 manual right at 100k or little less v6 $8500. Must have sold it I guess.
