Hi Everyone,

I'm encroaching on 100K. I need to get some service done like spark plugs (and wires?) etc but I'm really curious about the transmission flush.

I looked into this a long while back and had a lot of different information here from the forum. Some 4.6's had had the tranny flush and some haden't. Also, there is a wide variety of pricing too from what I remember.

I want to keep my car for a long while but don't trust the grease monkey's at the dealership. I want to go in and tell them exactly what I want and not be jerked around.

I remember the last time I called about tranny flush they said it was $72/qt and that I didn't need to get it done.

Anyone know what a coolant flush is costing them these days?

Hi ASH - Are you set on having the dealer (or Indi) mechanic do this service? I ask because the spark plugs should be fairly easy to replace since it's a Longitudinal engine and all 8 plugs should be accessible. Also, this engine (and probably most if not all modern engines) uses coil packs, so there are no spark plug wires to dick around with or replace.

Check out this thread for more info which may help. Be aware that the thread is old and from 2009 but a few forum members at the time can speak to how easy it is to pull a plug from this engine.

A for the tranny flush, I have not personally done this since I've only got 39,200 miles on my car, but a some people say the correct tranny fluid for the ZF tranny can be purchased for much cheaper than say the dealer.

This thread may help, about fluid pricing? Latest info on thread is from 2011.

As for the coolant flush - I had mine done last April 2013 and I think it was between $150-$200 without looking at my receipt from the dealer......

Let us know what you find out:cool:

Thanks Scott - much appreciated. Its funny how well this engine has been for me. I haven't even had to look to see if there are wires for the plugs!!!!

Knock on wood....

Ash where you located?

I work for Hyundai, I recommend you stick to the hyundai fluid.
A simple drain and fill can be enought for our transmission but a flush would be best.

I believe that dealer really wants to f@#* you over with that price. We charge around 129.99 for a flush, a little more for the special fluid. If your not to far maybe you can come.

We charge right around the same thing for a coolant flush, or I believe 119.99. I'm not to familiar with the prices. But a simple drain and fill is enought. I would do the flush just to add the cleaner and the water pump lubricator that comes with the kit.

Maybe your local dealers uses other products idk, but we work with vavoline. We have there oil treatments, coolant flush services, transmission services, ad system deodorizer and biodide which is really great for the ac. And power steering flush.

I have a 2011 4.6 and am coming up on 75,000 miles. I have the same concern too about the "lifetime fluid".

The best solution I was able to find was from the California Transmission Supply Co. Their solution is specifically made for the 6HP26 transmission in my Genny. $242 for 6 qts. of LifeGuard6 fluid (the one required by the transmission manufacturer), 1 filler plug, gasket, and 1 new oil pan (since the oil filter and magnets are molded into the pan). The Lifeguard6 fluid is $20/qt alone.

I have no affiliation with CTSC, but this was the best price I could find for the real, true, OEM fluid. They just happened to make a kit for my transmission. Other than the refill level is very temperature sensitive and a bit of a PITA, replacement is relatively straightforward.

Hope this helps. If someone bites on the idea, let me know how it goes. I am probably not far behind you.

The best price I have seen for the ZF transmission fluid is about $25 per quart (or liter, not sure which). Since it takes 10 quarts (or 9.5 liters), I don't see how you can do it for anywhere near even $150.

Here is a link for the fluid on eBay, but is also available on Amazon for about same price:

If you pay more than $120 for a coolant flush you are getting taken for a ride.

The corporation I work for has over 800 "fast-lubes" and charge between $79.99-$99.99 (depending on region, MN is $89.99 across the state) for a coolant flush using the correct fluid. Our company also backs the workmanship and product.

As far as ZF spec fluid, I have not had it done yet (76k) and despite what the transmissions manufacturer or any BMW dealership says, I will still have it flushed at 100k because I do not believe there is a fluid that is good forever. It is "lifetime" fluid and the definition of lifetime is: the duration of a thing's existence or usefulness.

so basically, when your transmission shits itself, the life is over and the fluid is now deemed bad.

Hyundai (like most Japanese and Korean cars) uses a different type of coolant than is sold for $10 per gallon or less at most stores for American cars. I am not just talking about a long life coolant. Dealer charge for the Hyundai branded coolant is going to be $20-$25 per gallon, so it might cost more than at a fast-lube (although a fast-lube would likely just use the wrong coolant and potentially damage the water pump, etc). For the V8, 6 gallons of coolant are needed (assuming 50-50 mixture with water). I also wonder if fast-lubes use deionized/distilled water as required, or whether they just use tap water (actually I don't wonder about this and I would bet my life savings that most use tap water).

The coolant we use meets ASTM DD306. It is OAT and P-HOAT compatible for all late-model Asian makes.

Will you bet your life savings on those "fast-lubes" who have it delivered pre-mixed from the manufacturer? Go sit in the corner.

my 2012 Genesis 4.6 manual says for ATF (for ALL engine sizes)-- "GS ATF SP-IV-RR, HYUNDAI genuine ATF SP-IV-RR or other brands meeting the above specification approved by HYUNDAI Motor Co." -- total capacity 10.67 qts.-- AMSOIL sells for $12.45 per quart (full retail) for the signature series full synthetic or $9.10 for the OE synthetic.

So maybe earlier models used the ZF stuff, but mine sure don't...

Starting in 2012, Genesis comes with Hyundai built 8-speed transmission. Before that, it was ZF (V8) or Aisin (V6), both of them 6-speed.

Be careful when buying transmission fluid. It is not like motor oil where if you get the most expensive one it will work on any transmission. Each transmission requires a specific fluid with the correct friction properties. Personally, I would only use OEM fluid, since a new transmission costs about $8K (not counting labor) and I have seen transmissions completely fail due to wrong fluid.

But I don't expect to keep my Genesis beyond 100,000 miles, so it will also be under warranty even without a fluid change.

I would check and see if Hyundai recommends a transmission flush. The manufacturer not the dealer. There is a difference between what the manufacturer says needs done and the dealer recommends to make more money.
Honda recommends against transmission flushes. I have had two Hondas with over 250,000 miles that never had the transmission oil changed . You can not even change the transmission filters on a lot of them now because it is buried inside , the transmission has to be disassembled to get to it.

Funny - I was at the dealer earlier this week for an unrelated issue and brought up the 30k service, asking what it entailed. One of the items mentioned was a transmission flush. Is this not standard process from dealer to dealer - or does each make up their own service recommendations?

The purpose of a dealer service department is to make money. They can offer any services they want to. The owner's manual is the definitive guide as to what is required to maintain the warranty coverage.

One issue is that the Genesis has used transmissions with synthetic fluid, which does not require as frequent fluid changes as ones that use conventional fluid, and that dealer may just use the same schedule for all cars.

I'm bringing in my car tomorrow for a coolant flush. I thought about doing it myself but no way...

I'm going to have the campaign done along with the stop lamp switch recall. I did not tell the lady on the phone about how I want this done. Do they keep these parts in stock you think?

Also, is there any other major recall or campaign I need to know about. I don't go to the dealer much and don't get a lot of maintenance done either... so I'm no in the "know" nor have had anything done to the Genny in a while.

When I called my dealer about the stop lamb switch, they said they had a very large number in stock, since there were a lot of different Hyundai vehicles recalled (although there are several different switch models depending on the vehicle).

Your service advisor can tell you of any other pending campaigns on your car based on your VIN.

Thanks Mark - I'll ask them when I get there.

Here at the dealership... boy these people are leeches. First they try to over charge me for coolant flush. Then I ask them since my tires are already off to rotate my tires. They give me some Bullshit excuse not too. I'm due for a rotation...

Then they charge me 45 bucks for windshield wipers.

Transmission flush is around 800....

Plus everyone here looks like a grease ball.
