My Genesis makes a ticking sound while idling. I've had this since purchase in November. Is this normal for a Hyundai? Compared to other auto makers. It seems very loud. I am guessing the ticking is from the fuel injectors going into the engine. Is it because it is a GDI engine? Does anyone else 5.0 sound like mine. I wish that the car would be a little quieter at idle. Otherwise car runs great!

Here is a link to video: https://youtu.be/21MMCW1qM5E

Please advise. Thanks.

I have noticed same thing. When I took to dealer for service, they said it was normal. So not sure if they were lying or not, but thats what they said.

mine does the same. When I was test driving the salesman told me that they tried to muffle the sound of the injectors by adding more insulating strips under the hood around the edges and you will also notice foam/rubber covers over the fuel distributors towards the back on top on each side of the engine. that is where all the ticking is coming from.

Normal for a GDI car. Close the hood and drive it like you stole it :D

agree normal! It's just the purr of a sleeping lion ready to roar those 430 horses :D

UPDATE 4/30/2015......VIDEO

My cars ticking/noise seems to be getting louder!!! I went to the dealer which resulted in my car having a valve adjustment. Dealer acknowledge sound was not normal. I will follow-up in a few days with a new post after I have picked up vehicle and driven a little to see if adjustment corrects issue.

BTW...I did compare my V-8 to two other NEW V-8's on the dealer lot. The sound on the NEW cars was night and day quieter than mine. My car only has 7000 miles on it.

Oh no way is that normal; that sounds horrible.

If the last video is after the valve adjustment, it may be time for the Hyundai rep to step in.

The first video was a bit loud, but it really is a bear to record engine noise accurately.

The second video was almost painful to listen to.

UPDATE 4/30/2015 @ 2:00pm Pacific time.....
Dealer called and needs to keep car over the weekend and until next Tuesday (ordering parts). They are now also replacing all the hydraulic lifters since they already have cover open to adjust valves. Per my service adviser "this has only happened one other time" and changing the hydraulic lifters (which cause the knocking sound) should correct the issue. At least dealership/Hyundai are stepping it up to promptly correct the problem. Fingers crossed...if not I will evoke my California "three times" lemon law if Hyundai cannot PERMANENATLY correct problem. This is their 1st attempt to fix. So if it goes to the 3rd time plus +...I will have them give me a new engine/car.

I agree with you on that video. That is not right at all. Keep us posted.

Yikes! Looks like you will be getting new motor. Free. If that is the GDI acting up, so be it.. Sounds too much like one tappet on one valve. So,etching else does not sound right either. Some kind of muffled whine or noise too.

Your profile says you have a 5.0 ultimate. Correct?

Even your first video, I can hear the tell tale sound that mirrors a single tappet, single valve problem. Sounds different than GDI ticking you can also hear.

I guess it could be a injector or pump valving defect cycling on same injector.. Either engine valve related or GDI, deep and serious.

I wouldn't panic at this point, and sword rattling re lemon laws would be premature. . . I believe the dealer is on the right track, it sounds like one hydraulic lifter isn't pumping up properly.

Your problems should be solved very soon, so sleep tight.

Dealer doing ok... I agree might be just one lifter... But they need to show absolute why the lifter did what it did.. Was it defective, or did particles get in it? From the audio, something else sounds just a bit off. Keep a ear to the ground to listen to yours when lifter is fixed and other 5.0. Require them to get to bottom with facts, not guessing, why the lifter went bad (assuming it was one lifter.

AND... They told you they were "adjusting" the lifters? Nope. The V6, yes. Has or had solid lifters. The 5.0 lifters cannot be adjusted. Why would they be stupid enough to tell you they pulled the covers off to "adjust" the lifters? If they are adjusting some rocker arm, why in the heck did it get out of whack?

As they said in the movie Disclosure.. "Solve the problem". Get to the bottom of all this.

The dealer is doing a valve adjustment and replacing lifters. Sorry I did not make it clear.

I feel for your plight. You are being very clear. I think I am not....

Was your car quiet when your purchased it? I am assuming so for the sake of this comment.

That means something happened to cause the noise. In this case, seems like one or more of the cylinders has a valve train problem the started for some reason. Can the dealer describe why and how many cylinders have the valve train problem? What happened? They should be able to answer this.

There should not be any "valve adjustment" the dealer is telling you. unless a change caused something catastrophic (for your mileage), to happen.. As this V8 wears, if well maintained, the lifters will not make noise potentially for couple hundred thousand miles. Especially as noisy as the video shows. The lifters are hydraulic.. Meaning, lifters have features that use oil to "expand" them to keep the cam clearance and valve train (rockers... And in "Pushrod motors", pushrods), valve stems all within lash specs of clearance as the parts wear. Nothing to adjust.

Your dealer is not saying to you yet what caused the major change. One bad lifter? If so, did it cause camshaft and/or rocker arm damage with the severe clearance problem (which you heard as the loud metal on metal noise for how long?)? Was the lifter defective or did something get inside the oil passages that normally would pressurize it? In extreme cases, a camshaft that was defective will premature wear enough on one of the lobs that the lifter maxes out, and is not enough to keep the proper clearance. Which then will cause that noise. Or did something cause the cam to get out of spec? Point is... There is NO "valve adjustment" they are telling you on the V8 for maintenance.. Something broke the tolerances so bad, the hydraulic lifter could not adjust (or it went bad and could have damaged other parts of the valve train as a result). Or something else broke that is the cause of the valve train sounding noise.

If you plan on keeping the car, you need to have them actually diagnose what happened, not be a part changer.

UPDATE 5/7/2015........NEW engine coming!!!!

I got a call from dealership service advisor yesterday that the mechanic changed out the hydraulic lifters. Then while also changing the oil. Discovered metal shavings in oil. Service advisor described metal as large enough to warrant engine replacement. He also took pictures of metal shaving to show me later. Dealership could not determine where shavings came from. I guess there was some catastrophic engine failure. Per the service department, it is better to replace the engine rather than try to diagnose problem. I would not have settled for fixing or getting a "rebuilt" engine, etc.

Service advisor then sent email request to Hyundai corporate to for NEW engine. Request has been APPROVED by Hyundai corporate (less than 24hr. response). My new engine is arriving Tuesday and vehicle should be done by Thursday.

I'm glad Hyundai honored their warranty promise and quick response to getting problem remedied. Fingers crossed that all will be fixed and running properly.

Further update will come when I receive vehicle. BTW...dealership has been paying for my rental car since beginning of this issue(going to be 2 weeks plus). I guess they want to keep customers happy.

Congrats on getting through this and a new engine.

What is the consensus on the value reduction due to a new engine being on the vehicle history?

An engine change out as a unit is not that difficult. I wouldn't think it would have any effect on value.

I would change the engine oil at 1000 miles on the engine, just like I do on a new car.

I am sure Hyundai is going to tear apart the engine to see the cause of the problems.

Congrats! Good job to the mechanic ( not the gate keeper service writer). And Hyundai for getting you new motor.
