  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

5.0 Oil level @ 2000 miles

My original oil level was slightly low.

Update:

Took a road trip Friday & Saturday. Using Mobil Regular Unleaded with mixed highway & city driving and in Sport Mode we got 20.12 mpg (calculated) heading across the state with an average MPH of 37.

We filled up before heading home and got 22.38 mpg (calculated) with an average MPH of 50. This morning (at 3038 miles) I checked the oil and it hasn't lost a drop.

I topped off the tank now that I am back to my normal city driving and will update at next fill-up. That will be more of a comparison to the recent tank filled with Super Unleaded for a MPG test.

I have never heard of a new car that did not have the proper amount of engine oil from the factory. Maybe I am wrong about that.

I checked my oil level at my first fill-up and it was about midway between the two marks.

I am beginning to think that mine wasn't full either when I purchased it. I am at 3500 miles and since I topped it off at 2000 miles It hasn't lost a drop. It was a full quart low at 2000 miles.

Update:

Checked the oil this morning and at 4773 miles it was a 1/2 quart low. Below is an overview since I bought the car.

Overview:
  • Purchased car on 9/23/14 - 10 miles on car when I picked it up - Did not check oil (I should have)
  • Checked oil at 2155 miles on 11/16/14 - Checked one quart low - I followed the break-in period recommended in the manual to this point.
  • Checked oil at 3000 miles on 12/7/14 - Checked good - I drove it like I stole it in Sport mode since topping off the oil on 11/16/14.
  • Checked oil at 4773 miles on 1/11/15 - Checked 1/2 quart low - I continued driving it like I stole it in Sport mode.

Bottom line is that it appears that after the initial break-in period, it helps to hammer down the next few thousand miles (as recommend by fellow forum members noted in this post) to properly seat the rings. I have also be doing fuel test (Super vs Regular Unleaded) and am happy with keeping it in Sport mode and am continually getting great mileage for a car that has 420hp.

it will use less and less as your mileage increases. it still not broken in completely. Here is the new fountain of youth

Just passed 2000 miles on the 5.0. Had to add 2.5 quarts. I think I may have overfilled a bit but will check again in the morning. Probably only needed 2. Will update at 3000 miles.

Is it just me or does 2 quarts low at 2000 miles seem like a lot? I wonder if they filled it to 7 quarts at the dealer because my 2012 5.0 only took 7 quarts and I think the 2015 takes 8.5ish.

About 3K miles past my first oil change (Oil changed at 5766 miles) with 8337 miles on the car and it only checked about 1/4 of a quart low. I am happy with that. I am convinced my car must not have been full of oil at time of purchased. All you newbies I recommend checking your oil levels.

I checked my oil at my last fill-up and oil level has not moved since this earlier post. Car has about 4K miles now.

I've always dumped the factory fill between 1000-1500 miles to get rid of miscellaneous manufacturing chaff and then changed to Mobil 1. Did the same with the 2013 Genny, and it uses virtually no oil with (now) 7500 mile changes.

Don't use syn until the rings are well seated re: a couple thousand miles. Dino oil is the best for new engine breakin. I made this mistake many years ago with one of my own engine builds. Kept getting ring blowby. Folks older/smarter than me asked what kind of oil i was using for breakin....

Just checked mine, I was about mid-way between full and add at 600, now at 3000 I'm at Low. Anyone know what weight and or brand was OEM? Would prefer not to change till at least 5000, since I'm on a trip. Would prefer to just add OEM quart.

Quaker State. Weight is on the filler cap.
