  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

6MT Owners - Discussion Thread

so i took my 6MT in for its first 'free' Genesis service over the weekend. i passed on the valet service, and of course stipulated NO WASH. i'm at a bit over 8k kms for just over a year. i had done an oil/filter change at 6 months on my own.

service took ~4 hours, but i didn't mind since they gave me a G80 for the day. so i ragged on that as i ran errands.

on the work order was:

- 12 month service
- ECU update
- investigate squealing/noisy brakes
- investigate knocking/noise from front end over traffic calming bumps

as part of the 12 month service they replaced the cabin air filter, oil/filter, used Pennzoil Plat fully synthetic, did a host of inspections, fluid top ups and lock lubes. i was surprised they used Pennz Plat since it is not the recommended fill (Shell Heilx or Castrol). although i'm fine with Pennz Plat since that is my go-to synthetic and i use that for the 6 month DIY change anyways.

the jury is still out on what impact the ECU update had. i know a few guys on here are waiting to hear of results, particularly for the 6MT trim. the description (i'll snap a work order photo later) said it was an 'idle performance improvement' and a stop-start relearn. obviuously 6MT doesn't get the start-stop so that's irrelevant. i do not notice much in terms of boost gains. nor is the 'lag' completely gone in 1st, particularly in Comfort mode. my thought is that the lag is dramatically reduced, and i do not notice it in Sport and Eco. now, it feels like regular old turbo lag, and not an intentional programming issue. i've got some more driving to do.

they couldn't find any faults with the brakes or front end. everything was tight, and brakes looked good - they removed wheels for a thorough check.

the guys said my car was by far the cleanest they'd seen, even the undercarriage. not sure how that's possible, but i suppose other owners must beat the hell out of their cars. true to their word, the dealer didn't wash my car which was a pleasant surprise. the service rep was a car guy who was in the detailing biz before so i think he took my message to heart.

the G80 was a boat. it was a 3.8, which was fine for power, but the size of the thing made it unwieldy in traffic - at least that's how it felt. my wife commented on how wide the seats were. she was swimming in them compared to the G70 seats which are perfect. i was surprised how much larger the G80 was considering the G90 must be even bigger. i can't see why Genesis needs 3 sedans - is there really a market? the G70 is different, but the G80 and G90 must steal sales from each other.

That is a very detailed service order ;) That is the one thing that will be a bit painful for me whenever I do get my car is that the closest dealer is a pain in the ass to get to. I'm hoping they open one in the Plymouth area at some point because I'm not letting someone learn how to drive stick in traffic on my car for the valet service. The good thing is I have business in Connecticut fairly regularly, and there is a Siberian Ice manual in CT that I have my eyes on...

I had my 2nd service on Friday and there was more detail on it. Had a few sheets of paper. They dropped off a v8 5.0 G80.

That is a really smart idea for the valet service to have people driving in the level up car from what they currently own--great way to get into people's heads about moving up once they have outgrown their current car/want a change. How does the G80 drive?

Felt old on the inside. Especially the buttons. Nice power delivery.
Soft comfortable ride. Feels a bit senior citizen!

Lol... Those idiots.

I live far away from the Genesis dealership. (50KM+). My sales representative always wondered why I would drive my car in myself when Genesis offers concierge service. I always explain that I don't want some idiot performing high-rev clutch dumps for 50+ KM (one way, mind you), to get my car serviced.

Sure enough, last time I went in for an oil change, the kid taking my car to the service bay backed up out of the parking spot, then proceeded to rev the engine at about 3k and dumped the clutch, effectively spinning/screeching the tires. I turned around to my sales rep, who was right there to witness this, "See Mike, that's EXACTLY why I don't partake in your concierge service". And I felt very vindicated in my choice of bringing my car in myself.

^ yes, among other items.

here's a partial summary for the CAD spec 6MT:

sunroof doesn't show up since that is standard across all CAD trims for the G70, as are some other features. the list above only shows features in addition to the base 2.0T Advanced model.

posted this in the Reviews thread as well, but just a quick update after a long while of the G70 6MT's performance:

just returned from a ~1600 km (1000 miles) round trip to Jasper AB, averaging ~110 km/h (70 mph). the trip computer says 7.4l/100km (31.8 mpUSg) overall for the trip.

keep in mind i'm a 2.0T 6MT, but i was set to JB4 Map 1 the whole way, and was up above 140+ km/h (85+ mph) for extended periods over mountainous terrain on the Coquihalla hwy (a.k.a. the "Highway Thru Hell"). car was loaded with 4 people and luggage.

i was impressed with the range. against my expectations, i made it 740kms (460 miles) between fuel ups when the gas light just came on, with range to spare but it didn't make sense to push it. just spitballing, but if i had driven slower the range would likely have been ~7l/100km or less (~35mpUSg). EPA rating is 28 mpUSg highway, so even with my much less efficient and non-EPA circuit i beat it handily. i know the JB4 helps with efficiency so this may have played a part.

overall i was happy with the range, fuel economy and performance. at no point did i feel underpowered. lots of passing was required when the road narrowed to 2 lanes and after a downshift to 5th i made short work of the pass. often i left it in 6th which did the trick.

sure, the 3.3T/RWD/LSD/6MT would have been my preferred choice (alas it doesn't exist), but the 2.0T w/JB4 continues to impress. clearly the 6MT is not well set up for 0-100 launches. it does much better in the mid-to-upper range, so that works out great when on the road at speed when you actually need the performance for passing, etc.

I have 18,000 miles on my 2019 6MT, with 9,000 of those being on pure highway/interstate roadtrips. I have found the motoring press's concern about fuel mileage to be unwarranted. After ~120 hours and around 30 tanks of gas, I have experienced the following on the highway (almost never downshifting to 5th, and with extensive use of cruise control):
  • cruising at a steady 80mph for practically the whole tank: 31-32 mpg
  • cruising at 85: 29-30 mpg
  • cruising at 90: 27-28 mpg
  • cruising at 95: 24-25 mpg
  • ping ponging between 80 and 100: 20-22 mpg
City driving, I usually get 22-24 mpg. I am very happy with the fuel mileage I am getting. My car is completely stock, but I slightly overfill my tires to 34psi.

^ good update, and sounds in line with my experience as well. those numbers stack up pretty much exactly too. you're right, in Sport mode the response in 6th at elevated speed is usually more than enough to pass.

PS - my door jam sticker says 36/36 for tire pressure F/R. what does yours say? you have the OEM 19's, right?

Thank you, just checked my '19 and it is also 36/36. The car only yells at you below 32psi, so I assumed that was the suggested.

picked up a 'winter beater' a while back to supplement the G70. CDN spec 2003 540i/6 M-sport. 1 of 18 ever made from what i can determine. there were 48 CDN spec of the colour combo, of which only 18 were manuals. i always liked the look of the E39, and these are truly the last of the "mechanical" 5 series before everything went electronic and lost their way (IMO). local car to Vancouver, 170k kms (105k miles), 2 owners, no accidents, timing chain & guides done (common issue), solid service history paperwork, etc...

the driving experience is night and day between the E39 and G70, which is no surprise. the 4.4L V8 pulls like a freight train, awesome gearbox and clutch and the thing feels rock solid. i don't care what anyone says, you can't beat a V8 burble. i'm sure it will soak up highway miles like nothing. The G70 feels much more lively, much better steering (the E39 540i has a steering box, not a R&P), and of course the newer tech and features are a nice to have thing. i now realize how much i take a backup camera for granted.

i've already done some maintenance items myself, and have a list of cosmetic things to tackle over the next while. i'll mess around with it for a while and get it to where i want it to be then see what it picks up on something like bringatrailer.com. once borders are fully re-open i know guys from the US west coast will be looking so we'll see.

what could go wrong? lol...

Beater? Not my vision of a winter beater. If you stay away from the mountains then, yeah, maybe.

heh heh...it won't be seeing much/any actual winter roads. the previous 2 owners never winter drove it so i'll keep that alive for future sale. not that we get much real winter where i live anyways. the G70 will be my COVID-reduced DD with its winter tires.

I picked up a certified CPO genesis 6mt a few months back, for those who ran jb4 do you need to switch out the plugs for just map 1 and also how’d you run the odb2 cable?

You can run the stock plugs. In fact, I ran Map 2 on stock plugs without issue. If you do end up gapping plugs, use stock over Denso. Best is HKS over everything.
