If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

8-Speed Transmission Flush

Yep - that's the same stuff I used when I flushed my Azera trans a few months back. It was the only brand on the shelf at AutoZone that specified "SP-IV" - which Hyundai requires. It also listed Hyundai by name on the back of the bottle.

Update: Went to stealership to get oil changed and tech reminded me about the tranny "Service". So I said well I do value your push to get the $600 service but I did not see it i my maint. book. So he said "do you have it with you? it should be in your manual"
We pulled it out and he looked and said ummm hmm....Well Hyundai says you need it to make the warranty stick...HAHAHAHAH! I laughed at him...."You cant pick up the hammer can you"

Screw that I am going to do it myself....
He could not give me a more intelligent answer than that...

The tranny service is listed on page 7-11 of my manual. If you only have light use (normal) then service is not needed because I think Hyundai calculates you will go beyond the 5 years before the transmission fails from not being serviced.

Where do you put the trans fluid in the closed system ? Genny sedan 2012 3.8 ?

There is a fill hole in the side of the transmission. It can be filled when on a lift then brought to temp and rechecked on lift. Do not over fill or under fill or use non spec fluid. See all of the above discussion.

I wanted to bring this thread I started to sort of n happy ending. Here in MN we had a warm Winter so far this year and I couldn't wait 'till next year :-) So, I did differential flush, oil change and tranny drain & flush all at the same time over two-day period. Anyway, all went well I thought. I kept the car level on four floor jacks and drained the tranny. Only about 3 quarts came out unfortunately but it is better than nothing. I intend to do the same every 45 to 60K-mile interval to freshen it up. Ideally you want to replace the plastic tranny cover which has the filter built in to it. But unfortunately with this car, replacement parts like that are hard to come by or expensive :-(
The other few observations/notes here:
>I got the car up to operating temps after a commute from work (38 miles). Manual says go from P to D to P and N by staying in each spot for 2 seconds on the transmission. The car complains when you shut her down with it in N. But it works.
>Service manual recommends replacing the rubber o-rings on the bottom check and drain plugs as well as the metal crush gasket/washer on the fill hole one the side. I was able to get those at NAPA auto parts store. I can post the part numbers, if you need them. Let me know
>Lastly, I measured how much drained out. As I mentioned above it was 3 quarts. So, when I was filling it back up, as soon as I filled in about 3 quarts, tranny fluid would pour back out from the fill hole. So, it almost works like filling a traditional manual tranny or even differential fill on this car. So, that simplicity is nice. I got a cheap manual fluid pump from Harbor Freight store and it worked really well.
Remove plastic pan 4 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 plastic nuts (10mm & 9/16") to get to the tranny by the way. Fill hole is on the driver side.
All 3 plugs tightened to 18 lb/ft with 8mm hex socket

Wow, this ended up being a long post :-) Thanks everyone for your input.

Seems like you can find the transmission pan and filter assembly part # 452804F320 online for about $150 with shipping which is not too bad. That's the route I will go next time for draining more fluid and changing the filter.

Only 3 qts? That seems really, really low. You sure you didn't have the car nose-down on those stands? It holds 11 qts - and others usually drain 5 when level. Doing it 3 qts at a time is going to make for an awful lot of work in order to dilute-out the old fluid.

I just did a drain and fill last week and I ended up replacing about 5 quarts give or take. 3 seems very low.

Quick question if anyone else had to do this as well. this. I had to unbolt the shift linkage to get to the fill plug. Also it was so tight in there I couldn't use a ratchet. Had to use a allen wrench.

Interesting today team: I went for oil change today and I wanted to know how much it would cost for my so called transmission maintenance they spoke about the last oil change. Wouldn't you know it they all looked at me like deer in headlights. What transmission change? You dont need it since it is sealed. What are you talking about?
WTF!!! Dude, yall told me this crap was gonna cost over $600 to do the transmission flush or whatever now they told me Genesis dont have a stick since it is sealed!!!!
Welp, that is the last oil change for me, $79.00 for Synthetic Penzoil. I am done with dealer. I have no reason to go back...
Just a heads up in case the stealership tries this...

I don't think there are a lot dealers who have mechanics who done transmission fluid changes on the Genesis, due to the long drain interval recommended in the owner's manual. It is not easy to change the fluid on these transmissions, and they don't want to screw it up.

Another option for a trans fluid service is the BG Service, usually provided by both dealers and private shops. The BG system connects a fluid exchange system to the transmission oil coolant lines to the radiator mounted oil cooler. It pumps out the old fluid, and pumps in new fluid. The result is a complete fluid change, but the filter screen still needs to be changed. The cost for this service is about $200.00, and BG gives you some sort of trans warranty. Not sure of all the warranty details. I have had this service done to a Caddy STS V8 and a C5 Corvette. The transmissions performed well after the service, and both cars had a couple of track outings both before and after the service. The bottom line is complete fluid replacement for only $200 .

$200 will not even pay for just the fluid on the Genesis transmission.

Kind of off the subject, but a few years back I spoke with a mechanic about flushing my transmission. This was at a local shop. They said to take it to the dealer because they don't carry the fluid that the manual recommends. Then he told me if you are well past the manufacturer recommended time to do this, THEN DON'T BOTHER...EVER. I can't remember the exact reason but he said you can develop leaks that the old oil was clogging, or something like that. Several people have exchanged the fluid too late and ended up needing a new transmission.

So with the 2015 models, the manual says not to do this service, just "check the fluid" at various times. I guess it's not saying not to do it, they just don't recommend a service interval, rather a manual inspection and a decision by a trained mechanic. But I know many people who own cars for a long time and have never done this service.

There is a big difference between conventional transmission fluid and synthetic transmission fluid (assuming that the transmission is designed to use synthetic).

The synthetic transmission fluid in the Genesis is unlikely to show the kind of severe breakdown that can occur with conventional fluid. So I would not hesitate to change the Genesis transmission fluid even well past the recommended interval. Of course, some say that the Genesis transmission fluid does not even need to be changed under normal usage.

Modern cars are significantly different than were even 10-15 years ago, but a lot of the old rules of thumb are still trying to be applied, and it often just doesn't work anymore.

Just to be safe I did a drain and fill at 40,000 and will do another at 70,000 and a pan and filter change at 100,000. I just don't trust anything that says lifetime fluid. The fluid itself may be lifetime but what about all the crap floating around in it as particulates get into it. You can only change out about 5 quarts doing this and mine looked great when I did it but I figure its a safe bet against what I think is like a $6000.00 transimssion, if your just doing a drain and fill its a $15.00 fluid pump and i think $20 for the maxlife ATF.

Seems like a safe bet to me.

Keep in mind I overkill my maintence. I do syth oil and tire rotations every 4,000, air filters every 10,000 (in and out), clean and lube the brakes every 10,000 and am scrubbing/conditioning the leather once a month, clean and lube sunroof rails every couple months, detail the paint 4-5 times a year, ETC.

These things may increase the cost of ownership a bit and be a pain in the ass but I really want to keep this car till 250,000 miles with no major problems. Granted I have access to a lift which helps but all of this can be done with jackstands also.

Lube the brakes?? I would think that would make for an interesting next stop!!
It is a good idea to lube the calipers at the point where they pivot when brakes are applied. Obviously, make sure to keep the lube away from where the pads touch the rotors.
