If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi guys,

figured I'd sign up and start trolling around before the 2014 Genesis is avail for purchase.... and yes i know it will prob come with a 10sp.

My question is regarding the current 8sp transmission. Kind of wierd there are is no engine/trans sub sections on the board... guess that explains the owners of hyundai autos. Anyways do you guys have any numbers on gear change speed of the 8sp trans ?

I currently have a manual and enjoy that immensly, however will I will not keep my car outside of warranty.I was planning on waiting for the hyundai 3 series competitor however leaning towards the new 2014 genesis sedan. I hope the 10sp provides close to dsg speed gear changes.

and if any of you guys know me from the bmw or infiniti forums you know i speak highly of hyundai, so im not here to bust your chops ... yet ;)

thanks for your time

The current 8 speed may be the furthest thing from a DSG imaginable. It's strengths are confined to auto mode operation only, with smooth reasonably fast upshifts, good shift programming when decelerating that gives you the right gear on downshift almost every time, and virtually immediate kickdown if you go all the way to the floor. Some people will disagree with me on this, but I have instantaneous downshifts if I use the right pedal properly. I never have to think about this transmission in auto mode. It always does what I want it to, but it will never be an M car or an AMG.

This thing fails miserably in manual mode and the driver interface is not good. The gearshift operation is reversed, for example, requiring you to push the lever away from you. That's flawed before you ever try to shift up or down. When you do shift up or down, think sloth. It is meant to be put in D and left there when not in reverse or park.

Going foward, I hope Hyundai has listened to all the criticism about this transmission and will incorporate changes to shift logic and some new design criteria for the next generation. However, it is still a business with them, and the cost/benefits of any design changes are going to have to hit the sweet spot of their market.

I'm an x-M5 owner and now have an Rspec, so I can relate to your fondness for a stick. While I bought the car as a "touring" and runabout vehicle, I find the 8spd to be one of the less satisfying aspects of the car. It DOES NOT SHIFT FAST and if you reprogram it for faster shifts (has a learning mode) it becomes harsh and unsettled. I can live with the slower shitfs because I bought it knowing that it wasn't a performance vehicle, but it is a few generations behind the top brands auto . As far as shifting like a DSG....forget it, but then again its really a luxury car trying to be a sport sedan and not the reverse.

Don't get me wrong, a great car for the money, but more like an LX460 than a 535 or M45.

Thanks guys !

Im guessing it's either the same or slightly better then my auto trans in the G35. Unfortunately this was part of the reason of replacing it with a manual 335. I know there was a comment about paddle shifters on the 2014 hopefully its not fluff and they mean something.

I hope the Gen 2014 improves the autotrans, this may cause me to wait for their 3 series competitor. Unfortunately I have scheduled maint arriving soon on my car and dont want to spend the thousands of dollars required - so i need to hop out in a resonable period of time.

I'll go back to lurking !

Ive found infiniti auto transmissions to be much more sporty, most of the time to the point of harsh. This is comming from driving many M37's during my comparison of the Infiniti to the Rspec I purchased and also a friends G35xS....

Hyundai has a long way to go to get the transmission correct, I would love to see a DSG with some sport modes in the next model of the Rspec.

I dont regret my purchase though... but as said above by a few other Rspec owners... the transmission isnt the most satisfying part of the car. But its livable for now.

(not trying to sound like a troll)

twice now ive sold cars to get manuals. doesnt matter how good the car is I'm just one of those guys who likes rowing through the gears. though i'd tough it out if it had a good trans. ugh decisions decisions

I'll admit the marketing isnt for me, its for people looking at the 5 series, lexus 460 etc, so a softer gear change is desirable. I know the three series trans is very quick with changes to the point of jolting people from a start.

I've always owned a stick (last one was a 6-sp '02 Maxima SE) so buying the Genesis 5.0 was a big adjustment. A year in, and I'm still trying to press the phantom clutch pedal !!
Anways, the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec 8-spd shifts smooth in auto mode. I would recommend never shifting manually. Too slow and jerky in the slower gears. In the city, what works well is to let the auto do its thing and then I lock it into a gear so to keep cruising in town at about 2000rpm (this saves on premature brake wear and the engine is still quite relaxed). It downshifts automatically when you stop and a stiff kickdown will disengage the manual mode. On the highway is where I appreciate 8th gear. I get 11.0L/100km (about 25mpg) crusing at 130km/h (80mph).
When you gas it from a stand still (with ESC off), the auto shifts absolutely fine and always hits the sweet spot in the next gear.
I agree with some other comments posted here. This is not a BMW but really feels like a Lexus LS460 but ALOT faster!

You don't need a DSG to get instantaneous shifting anymore. Go drive the 2012/2013 3-series with the sport automatic. Paddle shifting is instantaneous along with rev-matching. The Genesis was designed from the start to go after the Lexus LS. The comment above about the Genesis being a luxury car first are dead-on. I've also sold a couple autos to get back to a manual and the slow downshifting and manual shifting in the Genesis is one of the few things keeping me away.

I have owned a G35, a 2009 Genesis 4.6L and now a 2012 Genesis 4.6L. The 2012 is the most disappointing of all in terms of gear shift speed. It is downright disappointing in down-shift to the point I'm thinking of selling the car. It's much harder for me to shift lanes to pass in traffic because it takes a good second for the transmission to downshift and the engine to rev and take off. The 2009 6-speed ZF transmission was much better.

The Genesis is not a "sport" sedan. It is "touring" car----------and does that well. I drive a 6 speed manual in the 03 Vette just fine, but I like the "luxury" of not worrying about shifting when I'm driving the Genesis. It seems to be in the right gear at the right time and shifting during normal or even spirited driving is just fine. Upshifts or downshifts are exactly what I would expect and want. If you want a full on paddle shifter, this isn't the tranny for you.

By the way, full pedal to the metal shifting seems fine also.

And a 10 speed tranny behind a strong V8 is ridiculous.

You need a calendar to time the shifts in these cars.

way to go ! Diggin a thread from the past :)

I never used the ZF trans in the Genesis (so I cant compare).

Every car has it's quirks And the Hyundai has minimal. I know I'm not happy with the transmission shift speed, the 1-2 sec pause or the Nannies...

kinda disappointing buying a car that can do <5 sec 0-60... but does it in 6 seconds. using 335i as a reference the auto was reliably faster then the manual and DSG quick gear shifts. If Hyundai wants to front with a 5.0 V8 and compete with the performance side of luxury brands, they better continue to bump up their game.

Perhaps if Hyundai didn't use the Rspec badge it would just be a ballzy cruiser... instead of them making it something it's not.

I went from a Stick Prelude to an auto G35... and yes the Auto killed me I had to go back to stick... so I understand.

shame I don't cruise on the highway 25 MPG for the Rspec is GREAT !
