  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate at an Repo auction and I’m in love with the car. First thing I did was fix the head unit (was basically unresponsive) by replacing the 64gb SSD in the head unit with a 500gb SSD flashed with the 2015 image file. I recently purchased the Kplay2 Car4Play boxes and plan to install soon, giving me Apple CarPlay.

My question to this forum is - has anyone successfully replaced the 9.2” LCD Touch Screen with an upgraded version? The OEM screen resolution is 720p, which is a bit outdated to me, and I’d like to upgrade with a 9.2” display that has a higher resolution while keeping the touch screen capabilities.

I’d appreciate any help or insight. Thanks!

-Alec

You really need a higher pixel density than 160 pixels per inch in a 9in display? You're not going to be able to see the improvements over 1280x720 on such a small screen - especially on something that is displaying mostly static images (unless you are using nav).

I’m simply wondering if anyone was successful in swapping the LCD panel with a higher resolution display

I understand..... and at risk of sounding repetitive and possibly ticking you off... I again have to ask why? The amount of labor to pull apart the dash and install a new screen, plus the cost (if you don't do it yourself), and the cost of a higher res screen with touch is going to be quite significant vs. what you will get out of it.

The geeks over at AVS Forums worked on this quite some time back (Viewing distance chart (720p vs. 1080p vs. 4K vs. 8K and...) and the long and short of it is you are not going to see any appreciable difference at the 2-3 feet away you are going to be sitting for such a small display.

The crossover point for a 9in screen looks to be about 7 feet. I'm not at all trying to knock what you are doing - just honestly trying to help save you some $ and likely some disappointment after all the cost and effort. If we were talking double-digit screen sizes or further distances it would be a completely different conversation.

No worries, I appreciate the counter argument. I’ll preface by saying I don’t mind the screen - the size is great and it’s clearly visible. In my opinion, this is the most impressive car I’ve owned from a quality standpoint. I’m just an Engineer who loves tinkering and improving things, especially with cars. I’ve already pulled the dash and gotten access to the head unit and screen, so I'm not concerned with that. I’m envisioning a tablet-like quality screen, one that has better touch responsiveness, contrast, resolution, etc. while fitting the dash cut out and maintaining the elegance of the stock interior. Money isn’t a concern, and I’m confident in tackling this myself if there is a screen that’d fit. I’d imagine any screen/display that has the same pin structures would work (but haven’t confirmed) that’s why I’m looking for input from others that may have done something similar.

Understood - that certainly changes things a bit, and I am interested & anxious to hear your results. :)
