  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Advice Please! 30 day old CPO 2009 4.6 Alignment/Tire Balance Problem

If the selling dealer turns out to be no help with this unfortunate issue, then I certainly wouldn't let them sell me tires or touch the alignment. I'd find my most reputable alignment shop and with alignment specs in hand from the Hyundai Service website, have it aligned to spec. As for the tires, moving the cupped front tires to the rear may stop the shimmy/shake, but even though you balance them, you still have cupped, noisy, vibrating tires. Here you have some options: (1) live with it, (2) replace those two tires with like tires only, or (3) have them "trued" and balanced. Trueing will make the tire rounder and smoother than it probably was when it was new. I wouldnt worry too much about removing rubber from the tire as it will wear less running smooth than it will cupped. I agree with the other posts that the Hunter Road Force balance is the only way to go. Any other balancing system is a waste of time and money IMO.

jda8,

May I suggest taking your car to a shop that does nothing but under car repair only.

I had the same issue with my new 2011 genny 4.8 and to keep the story short, I took it to a shop in Seattle that has done nothing but under car repair since 1962.

http://trulineseattle.com/index.html

I added their website so you may find a shop similar in your area with the same type of service. They setup all exotics i.e. Ferrari, Benz, Lambo's etc so why not a Hyundai Genesis right?

Well....they found out that the cross member was out of alignment from the factory and front and rear tire alignments were off as well. Why didn't I take it to the dealer for this service? What do you think?

Then I tried three sets of tires based on the recommendations of our members here and finally opted for the Bridgestone Turanza Plus tires and now have a smooth riding and straight steering car.

Unfortunately it cost me a cool grand for all work perfomed with tires and one day of lost time of which the dealer or Hyundai never reimbursed me for. For what it cost me in dollars by sending it to a reputable shop, it saved me much frustration and mainly my sanity. :D

Final update on this issue (I'm the one who started this post):

Thank you all for your response posts and suggestions. By and large, you were all spot-on. After having Goshen Hyundai diagnose the problem, I took my car to a local reputable tire place. The employee told me that the manufacturer's warranty would not cover anything in my case, as the problem (cupping) stems from poor alignment and a lack of balance and rotation, not as a result of a defect in the tires themselves.

I then made an appointment with Glenbrook Hyundai, the dealership that sold me the car. To make a long story short, the service manager drove my car by himself and then told me he didn't notice either of the problems I stated (a pull to the right and shaking/shimmying at high speeds). He then offered to go for a ride in my car with me driving, which we did. I showed him how the car continuously pulled to the right every time I let go of the steering wheel even on a flat street, and he said that the pulling was "normal." Afterward, he sent me around the corner to an affiliate dealership to have them check my alignment. After ten minutes, the technician came out with a printout that said "Alignment Diagnosis: FAILED." I went back to Glenbrook Hyundai, showed the service manager the printout, and he said "Huh" and "I'll take care of that right now." They then performed an alignment for free, after which I drove the car, and it drove perfect. No more pulling to the right.

With respect to the two badly cupped front tires, they told me that replacing them during the CPO inspection process was not required by Hyundai as the tires were not damaged or unsafe. They were admittedly aware of the uneven wear, but did not conclude that replacing the tires was necessary. They quoted me $575 for two new tires, mounting, and balancing. After speaking with the lead sales manager, I was then offered two new tires for $300 even (no tax on top of that) where the sales department would eat everything above $300. I said yes, paid the $300, and have two brand new, non-cupped front tires. My car now rides much better and there is no shaking or shimmying at high speeds.

Was I happy about paying $300? Of course not. But was I pleased that the sales department was willing to cover approximately half of the cost as a result of my complaint? Yes. Some of you may say, "I would have thrown a fit and demanded they replace them for free," while others will say, "See, I told you to expect to chip in some money!" I'm just glad this issue is over. And I won't be doing anymore business with Glenbrook Hyundai. If I didn't mention it before, their 150 point certification checklist said my fog lights and fluids were in good working order. Well, after I bought the car, I found out both fog lights were blown and the car was almost 1,000 miles overdue for an oil change (they ultimately fixed both of those for free). I also found out well after the purchase that all CPO Hyundais come with a 90 day free period of satellite radio. I was never even offered or told about that during the purchasing process. Whatever. My admitted nit-pickiness aside, I'm movin' on.....

Congrats you won-- you got the car driving true and are happy with it. Can't get no better than that. You are lucky that they didn't charge you for blinker fluid.

Who does bubble balance? I have not seen one is at least 25 years. Goodyear Stores got rid of bubble balancers in about 1978.

I don't hang around in a tire store so I don't know what methods they use to balance a tire. Glad you're knowledgeable about tire balancing. So, why would balancing a set of 4 tires cost $300! THAT's the real question here.

I agree that 300.00 for balancing is outrageous. Although for roadforce balance I can understand 30.00 per tire due to labor and the investment in the machine.

I think I was maybe misunderstood. I didn't pay $300 for just a rotation/balance. I paid $300 for two brand new tires, plus mounting and balancing. The service department quoted me $575 for two new tires, mounting, and balancing. But after I complained to the sales department, they offered the same thing for $300 even and the sales department would "eat" everything above $300.

So, I got two brand new tires, mounting, and balancing for $300 instead of $575.

Thanks for your original post and all the great comments. Always learn something ever day.

The Goshen dealer sounds like they are authentic.

The Fort Wayne dealer owner should go to hell since he allows the morons you worked with (and I am sure what you experienced others have also) to push you around. Only when faced with a persistent client did they decide to provide service. However, you not anyone else has their respect. Which in turn creates what you experienced.
