Air Filter Box Contraption

My 3.8 Genny has a hesitation/lag when accelerating from a low speed. When I use the sport mode there is no noticeable lag. I now use the sport mode for my in-town driving and regular mode for any "highway" travel.

Later this spring, I will attach a "slider" to the magnet to see if it makes a difference.

I looked, and didn't see anything. From over top of the radiator, there is open ducting down the left hand side (as you stand facing the radiator) that goes straight to the airbox. I'd be interested to see a picture of the filter on your car.

Just completed the reversal of magnets on flapper door. I like it. Seems to be more responsive. Feels and sounds as if the engine does breathe better

As the owner of a 2015 Genesis Sedan V6 for the last 6 months or so, I have always thought that the car felt sluggish accelerating from a stop, up to about 3,000 to 4,000 rpm's, and even felt sluggish at other times as well.

After reading posts on this issue, I decided to open up the air filter box and simply remove the small magnet in the flapper door (very easy to remove) and keep the other magnet in the housing. Now, the door flips open easily without the magnetic attraction between the door and the housing.

The difference in response and acceleration is staggering. Very happy with this simple and easy fix to improve performance.

I did it on my 1G 2014 V6 since almost new and used for 30,000 miles and now on my 2G 2016 V6 since the first day, no problems at all
 
Ok, I opened up both boxes and I don't see the door flapper like it was in G1. Am I missing something? is it in a different location?

I do not think they would be anywhere else, but maybe another G2 V8 owner would know.

It is possible that Hyundai used this "technology" in the V6 to increase the reported mpg of the engine as it may not be as efficient as the V8. I have noticed a small decrease in the mpg of my car since the magnet has been removed, even today as I drove as conservatively as possible, but the increased response and performance is worth it.

Maybe in V6 of 2nd generation Genesis, because the flap was in my '13 V8 Rspec.

On my 2016 V6 G2 there is a "sway" bar going across what appears to be the filter housing. Can someone post pictures of how you get this open without removing this bar? Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Almost certain you need to remove the bar. Look at the pic above. The bar is in the front above the light removed. I had to take this off to get to the housing for the DRL light that was burnt out (both of mine have burnt out).

yeah you have to remove it to get to the air filter...its really simple anyway but i know its super annoying having to that extra tool.
 
I was able to wedge the magnet out from the flap, it was in the slot where my finger is in the first picture below, it was so small I missed it at first.

I'd like to remove the flapper entirely, but how the heck do you get it off? I tried prying at the "hinges" in the second picture with a screwdriver but it didn't seem like it was going very far, and I didn't want to wreck something. It seems like the whole assembly holding the flapper also comes off at the second set of hinges - to the right in the image - but I couldn't figure that out either.



 
I took the magnet out of the flapper on my G2 V6 tonight. I'll see what it's like tomorrow.

The magnet is actually pretty strong. Good thing, because I dropped a socket while taking off the large air intake hose. Had to fish it out with the magnet taped to a yardstick. Pulled it right up with that.

Does anyone really know what the purpose of the flap is? From all the reading I've done about it, I sure can't figure it out. Seems like maybe keeping the flap closed at low RPMs would make the engine run richer, but when the flap is open there should be more air flow.
