  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

air filter change info 3.8 in pics

It actually does help with the environmental impact. You can clean and reuse them for the life of the car (10 years or so). In the past 8 years, I have replaced 12 filters on cars. I'm not very friendly to the environment but I see myself moving in that direction. I care more about animals than the environment. I'm not going to hold back in life to preserve something that is irreversible, we'll colonize Mars soon enough LOL
Good point about the saving paper(trees) by reusing the cotton/ foam performance air filters. By environmental impact I was referring to more engine oil by used due to the engine becoming dirtier and more processing impacts like air filter oil production and other methods that would create more environmental waste and pollution. However, if the performance filters are cleaned and reused then it would probably be less of an impact than constantly producing and shipping paper air filters.
My previous post was just speculation on why the big name automakers do not use high flowing performance filters on all engines instead of restrictive paper filters. I personally like my K&N filters and I gained about 2 mpg on my average mileage. Well worth the trouble in my opinion.

What the hell ever happened to the single wingnut in the center? Lol
Wingnuts? What are those?:)

What happened to just pulling the clips and popping the lid off the air box to change the air filter like in most engines in the late 90's and early 2000's.

I see what you're saying. I've had K&N on two of my cars and have noticed an increase in MPGs. Performance not so much. The reason why automakers use these is for the reason you stated prior; keeping the engine free from as many contaminants as possible. It may also be due to advances with the vehicles they sell. They can't come out with a car that is perfect; there would be no room for improvement. Just like CVTs. They are perfect for race setups and performance cars because the car is in the powerband the whole time. They simply cannot mass produce cars like that or their futures would be in jeopardy.

Highly doubt the invested much in the air filter they just build the box to accommodate a certain size filter panel and use the cheapest possible filter so they can charge you an arm and a leg at the dealership. Also I hope you meant DCT not CVT, CVTs are horrible :)

LOL, you heard correctly. CVTs keeps the car high in the rev range. I HATE them with a passion. Nevertheless, you can't deny their benefits. In a car that I would track a lot, CVT is the best way to go. Daily driving, NEVER in my life.

Really? I don't think CVT can handle the heat with high hp racing. But yea its weird asf driving a CVT lol. It would be badass to have a really good responding DCT in the G80 Sport to further differentiate the cars.

At the moment, they can't. Plus, it would take the fun out of manual and semi-auto cars. In theory, it's one of the best approaches. But at what cost? That is the question.

I can see that putting the rpms the meat of the powerband but now with hybrid electric power, example McLaren P1 using the electric motors to fill the torque gap, and koenigseggs one:1's one drive setup it doesn't even shift anymore. So that CVT will most likely stay in the economy segment.

CVT transmissions are pretty good for getting decent performance and fuel economy out of smaller engines. I owned a couple cars that had a CVT, a 2005 Mercury Montego AWD with a 3.0 V6 and a 2006 Nissan Murano with a 3.5 V6. Both of the CVT transmissions performed pretty good. The Mercury felt weird due to not having any shifting sensation, however power delivery was very smooth even if it felt like driving an large RC car. Nissan used some kind of artificial shift program to give their CVT a shifting sensation so it felt like a normal transmission that also felt smooth.

Both of the CVT had better gear ratios and fuel economy than the 5 speed or six speed automatics used at the time. Current 8 speed and 10 speed automatics have better gear ratios and fuel economy than most CVT , so I can see CVT transmissions being fazed out by the few automakers that use them like Nissan.

My old 2005 Mercury Montego Premium AWD , I actually miss that car.

I agree entirely. Electricity and batteries are the future!

Sad but true, we can almost see the trend in automotive future from F1, a lot of what we use came from F1 anyways, it just trickles down.

That thing is a beast lol.

Yeah. It was a pretty large car. I had 20in wheels on the car with 245/40-20 tires and the wheels still looked stock sized. It was very dependable until I traded it for an Infiniti M35. The Mercury was one of the few cars I actually bought that was almost new. It had about 5000 miles on it when I bought it in 2007. Damn good car. Slow as hell, but had an smooth comfortable ride.

Hi Guys,

I just bought a 2015 Hyundai Genesis.

I noticed the corner brace that bisects the air filter housing is missing.

I'm trying to get a replacement from the dealer and am not having any luck yet.

What is this brace called and where can I get one ? The dealership is 75 miles away it's a hassle to get to and if the part is only a few bucks I'll order it myself.
