Almost 2 years and still in love with my Genesis

Having owned so many cars in the past decade, no car has been more fun than the Genesis Sedan. As my lease is coming to an end and only 24000 miles on it, this car still feels like i only got it yesterday from the dealer. Every car be it an acura, volvo, bmw, mitsubishi, honda, nissan, has not come close to the wonderful drive and luxurious feeling of owning the genesis. 2 years, not one week passed when i was not stopped or questioned about the car. it is an absolute delight and highly considering whether to keep it or go for the coupe this time... any suggestions?

Depends on whether a coupe fits your lifestyle and requirements. A few years ago I got an itch for a coupe so I bought a Toyota Solara. As cars go, it was ok, but I find that - even though I am the only driver of this car and never carry passengers in the back seat - I really need 4-door access to the back. The Solara was a constant aggravation in that respect and I was glad to get rid of it. I bought an Azera, which I was perfectly happy with until the Genesis came along. My Genesis is the finest car I've ever owned, but I personally would not want the coupe.

Agree with dg_Moore on this one. Forget the Coupe! --- 2 doors have much larger doors that are harder to control than a door on a 4 door. They are huge and heavy! I believe that most of the door dings are caused by 2 door vehicles. Also try letting someone out of the backseat while you wish to remain in the drivers seat in a 2 door. - Pretty ridiculous!

I echo dg_moore and cut-throats sentiments. Don't go for the coupe!

Personally, if there is a slight possibility, wait until the 2011 model comes out and think about the V8. I love power and this car has the looks and the feel of just an amazing car. You may also be able to get a sweat deal on the 2010 models during year end close out.

Have you thought about ending your lease early? Sometimes there is zero cost and you can move right into a new car.

Either way, no coupe, 4 door sedan IMO.

I feel just like you do. Really love this car and over the years I've driven some really nice ones. As the end of my lease approaches I'm starting to do the mental comaprisons of the 8 vs 6.

I drove the coupe as well before getting the sedan....drove them back to back. If you think the ride in the sedan is at all firm, the coupe is even firmer. I could not imagine having it as an every day driver after driving it. It felt responsive and handled well but the loss of utility will quickly grow on you as others have said. If you are dead set on a coupe I would look at the Mustang or Camaro which I drove as well and would have bought had the dealers not been gouging at the time (when it first came out).


I too am very happy with my Genesis.....but I bought a high performance motorcycle to satisfy my boy racer itch

Try sitting in the back seat of the coupe before you buy it.

The coupe is definitely a less expensive car than the sedan. It dumps the 5 bar for a MacPherson in the back and has less insulation all around. It is more Pony car, than luxury sports car...not that that is a bad thing. Just don't consider it in the same class for isolation and refinement as the sedan. If you are considering the coupe you might want to look at the new 2011 Mustang V6. Ford has pumped the power up to 305hp and all reviews are very positive.

The Genesis Sedan and Coupe have very little in common. They don't really share the same model name, because in Korea "Genesis" is a brand name, not a model name. HMA decided to import them and sell under the Hyundai brand name in North America (to help boost the Hyundai brand image), which creates the confusion.

I didn't say Hyundai was not the manufacturer of the Genesis. I said the Genesis is a brand name in Korea, not a model name. That is why the there is no Hyundai badging on the Korean domestic version of the Genesis and we are able to import their Genesis badging to replace all the Hyundai badging on our cars. GM has several brands (Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, GMC), Ford (Ford, Lincoln Mercury), Chrysler (Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep).

So if Genesis is more of a brand name in Korea (and not a model name) then the Genesis Sedan and Coupe are not necessarily the same or closely related model, as for example are the Infiniti G37 Sedan and G37 Coupe, etc.

This was typical Motor Trend nonsensical reviewing.

For example the guy in the video said about the Mustang V6

"..which makes this car, in this group, the quickest one here. It is also the best handling...."

Then when talking about the Genesis he says,

"...this Genesis coupe, 3.8, is the only true sports car, and it's the best drive here."

How does that even make sense?!?!? The Genesis coupe is the only "true sports car" despite the Mustang out accelerating and out handling it?????

I'll take the fake sports car that can out handle and out accelerate the true sports car, any day of the week.

Ridiculous.

I think it is OK to compare the Genesis to the classics, after all, based on the size, layout and weight of the Genesis, and it's rear wheel drive, it could be called a Korean "pony" car. In fact, because of the weight and 2+2 layout, it is more pony car than sports car. Before the latest Mustang, it was, arguably, the best small displacement pony car...at least from a performance standpoint. Now that the V6 Mustang "upped the ante" to 305 horsepower, they have switched places.

What is even more amazing is the Mustang is the lowest cost entry into this market. Once you option the Genesis up to the V6 ($25K) it becomes more expensive than the Mustang ($22k) by a good margin ($3000.) It should be noted, however, the Premium version of the Mustang, is the one that comes with the GT's better brakes and suspension package and that lists for about the same as the Genesis V6.

Theres always something wrong when you see a Charger or Mustang with 1 exhaust pipe!!!!! Seriously, I think the "Pony" cars should be just that. Big V8's or nothing at all!

Consider the original pony car, the Mustang, originally only came with a 6 cylinder. Also, the new V6 Mustang has better performance numbers than any previous generation production V8 Mustang, short of the limited release Shelby versions.

The first foreign car, I recall hearing equated to the American "pony" cars, was the 280z. It morphed from the small 240 sports car to the big 2+2 280z over it's life time, and it had the formula of long hood, short tail and lots of power.

Do you remember the really sad days of American pony cars, when GM put an 80hp iron duke 4 cylinder into the Camaro?...or how about the embarrassing Mustang II that was originally released with an 88hp 4 cylinder and a 105hp V6...no V8...and a landau roof? :-(

First of all, congrats on putting two years under your belt! I love mine as well, its been a great car so far and i think I'm in for the long haul. Its such a great car to drive, and all the amenities are a nice extra.

What i would say about the coupe is partially what has been stated before - its a sports car not a luxo sedan - very different from the car you've been driving, but if you're aware of that, good. Its a lot smaller, with the 3.8 engine it really hustles and the engine shows great grunt in the coupe package.

That said, it is nowhere as luxurious inside as the sedan - its much more a pony car than a two-door luxury car. If you want something fun and sporty instead of a sedan, its an option, probably good to compare to the Ford Mustang an its excellent Sync system.

Also, a general rule for me is two seats, two doors; four seats, four doors. If you're going to have back seats, it might as well be easy to get to them, and if you want a real sports car, don't bother with them. I don't know what you need in life, but there are some good sports car options these days. If you want a new sedan.... I'd get another Genesis!
