Consider the original pony car, the Mustang, originally only came with a 6 cylinder. Also, the new V6 Mustang has better performance numbers than any previous generation production V8 Mustang, short of the limited release Shelby versions.
The first foreign car, I recall hearing equated to the American "pony" cars, was the 280z. It morphed from the small 240 sports car to the big 2+2 280z over it's life time, and it had the formula of long hood, short tail and lots of power.
Do you remember the really sad days of American pony cars, when GM put an 80hp iron duke 4 cylinder into the Camaro?...or how about the embarrassing Mustang II that was originally released with an 88hp 4 cylinder and a 105hp V6...no V8...and a landau roof? :-(
Ah the dark days of Detroit, when people moved en masse to the better offerings from Japan...
The new V6 Mustang is no joke - it finally (after decades) has a respectable engine and is really well sorted. The 260Z was the "corvette chaser" from Japan, and then the 280ZX (X for luxury) upped the luxury quotient as many sports cars took on GT characteristics in the 80s. The ZX cars were great for sport and luxury back in the day...
