  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Android Auto - Hype?

For me, Android Auto and Apple Carplay give me always up to date maps. That is huge. The built in navigation in any car is already out of date before you buy it. The other thing for me is not having to learn a new system with every car you get. If it has Android Auto, you're going to have an interface that you're already familiar with.

I've rent a lot of cars and I try to rent one with Android Auto whenever I can because of that consistent interface.

i used aa on a rental minivan for 1800mile road trip and it came in very handy. no need for data in certain location without signal since i pre-downloaded the map beforehand. used pandora, spotify and amazon for unlimited music. it is one of the reasons i went with tech instead of ultimate. no need to pay for map updates every year and now with waze road trips are even better with crowd sourced navigation. they also recently enabled full google assistant functionality as well. with more and more manufacturers coming on board it will only get better.

I just got a 2016 Genesis with Tech Package. I wanted to get Ultimate, but dumped it when I discovered it doesn't support Android Auto. AA was absolute must. And I'll miss HUD. I still haven't got my car so can't comment on how well it works. I have been using AA on rentals for the last year and there is no lag whatsoever. So, if there is lag on the Genesis, that will be really really disappointing since I gave up HUD for it. I also didn't realize that it's not integrated with on-wheel buttons for changing tracks. I guess I either changed them by voice command or was playing my playlists on GPM and not needing to skip tracks on my rentals. Can't remember.

But with HUD integration, it will really be awesome. If they had even left out some hope for that happening in the future I may have been tempted to get the Ultimate package.

As far as integration with different apps, I highly doubt that they would have to integrate on-wheel buttons on an app by app basis. I can use many music apps with Google Home and just use a voice command to skip songs. That works on GPM and Spotify. The on-wheel button would just have to integrate with the AA apps the same way.

its butter smooth on my lg g5 and steering buttons work fine waking up assistant and for changing tracks/volume.

OK you guys, maybe you can explain something to me about AA: say you are using whatever app, nicely mirrored to the dash display.

Thanks in advance............

Android Auto was a big reason I went with the 2018 model year. After having AA via pioneer head unit in my previous truck, it became a must. Cable isn't a big deal. Ensures a solid and reliable connection, unlike anything wireless. Steering wheel controls work as expected. Voice prompts rely on Google, so it understand natural language. Music, navigation, weather, agenda, make a call/text? Just ask.

You get latest maps and live traffic via Waze/Google that is actually useful, unlike virtually any built-in NAV, even with SiriusXM Traffic. Then Google Play high quality music for the high quality 17 speaker stereo system just makes it a perfect little package. Also, unlike crappy SiriusXM radio, or low quality bluetooth audio.

Using my Galaxy S8+, I've only run into a minor glitch a couple times. Usually audio briefly confused as it switches from voice prompts and music. Might have to hit play twice when I first plug it in. Otherwise it works great. And if anything, I think most folks will find this easier to use than the factory system. If you're going to learn something new, might as well be one that works.

And yeah, everything AA is limited to the head unit. But that's a nice 9.2" 720p HD display. Not exactly a bad compromise.

Or if you're feeling adventurous, use both factory NAV (via HUD) and Android Auto at the same time as a backup, or second opinion. ;)

Same thing that happens when you use your phone. You'll see a pop-up notification so you can answer or ignore the call. Same with texts. It will use google voice to play back and give you the option to dictate your response.
