  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Android Auto support for Sonata but not Genesis?

Yup if u check out the headunit for the 2015 sonata it's running their newer infotainment system. They will be getting android auto and we will not :(

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
DAMN that sucks!! :'(

The Genesis and Sonata systems (at least the 8" Genesis version) look identical. As long as the Genesis and Sonata systems are running the same micro-architecture and memory requirements are met, it would be hard for me to see why they couldn't support it on the Genesis unless they did something weird in the Genesis hardware that prevents it.

My fear is that the lower end system might be compatible but the 9.2" screen may have very different architecture and may not be compatible. Politically Hyundai might be motivated to support neither Genesis system as it might be weird to offer the upgrade to those who didn't spring for the updated radio. I know that for a while, the regular radio supported the few apps that the upgraded radio did not. I don't know if that was because of the upgraded resolution or that the apps needed to be ported because Hyundai is using a different architecture in the upgraded radio.

The big issue is the smaller system in the Genesis actually runs android, while the larger system runs Meego as the base OS. Sure, both are linux under the hood, but without the android API, a lot more work would have to be done to port to the larger system. And yes, it would seem strange to only offer the upgrade to people with the lower end system.

Meego!? I though that OS was pretty much dead a few years ago when the big electronics makers backed Tizen. I wonder what made them dig that up from the grave. There has to be some hardware feature that made them go through the trouble of using a completely different OS. That sucks hard if so!

There are a lot of reasons a different OS was chosen. Intel Atom CPU, completely different architecture required some re-engineering anyway. Tizen is the road ahead, but not quite ready for prime time. Tom's Hardware Genesis Review has pretty much everything you might want to know concerning the 2015 electronics.

Great info and a very regrettable decision looking back. I have not had opportunity to mess with the 9.2 system beyond my brief play with it when we looked at one of the upper trims. Maybe someone can tell me what it does that the standard system doesn't. I really hope we all will not suffer a dead end upgrade path over the twist knob. The extra resolution and secondary storage can be handled on Android.

I think it really comes down to x86 architecture vs ARM. The actual CPU is much faster in the upgraded system. In my limited experience with it (4 days now) it is incredibly responsive with everything I have thrown at it. The twist knob could be just as easily supported in Android, both systems run a linux kernel and linux device drivers. The question is how such an I/O device would be integrated into the android UI

There is a thread saying that for Apple Play, Genesis users just need to take their cars in for the software update. Im no dev, but used to code back in the day. I just find it hard to believe that Apple Play is avail through a software update, but Android's isnt. Fingers crossed it will get updated. This might be my 1st and only Hyundai if it doesnt get updated.

Unless the thread you refer to includes an official announcement from Hyundai, it is speculation at this point. Local marketing reps at shows, dealer sales staff and the guy at the dealer parts counter are generally not good sources for these type of upgrades.

Agree 1000%..Im really hoping Hyundai doesnt upgrade their lower end car (Sonata) and leave their higher (Genesis) end high and dry.

I talked to the marketing guy at the Dallas Auto Show last week.

1. Sonata is still waiting on "who knows what" from Apple and Android. Other manufacturers are in the same situation. He refused to speculate on when. They did not have CarPlay or Android Auto on a Sonata at the show---like they did at the LA Auto show.

1a. He said his booth was next to Pioneer's at SxSW the week before, but he never made it over there.

2. After Sonata gets updated, he thinks that the solution will get spread to Genesis, and that both versions of the head unit will get updated. Of course, he said don't count on anything until it is officially announced. My gut feel is that his statements reflect a desire in Hyundai to "try hard" to include the Genesis, but until they can get the first product out, nobody actually knows if it is feasible

3. No improvements worth mentioning likely to come on 2016 models. If there are any announcements this spring, the NY auto show is probably where they would be. He didn't act like anything would be forthcoming.

What else did they do this to? Im new to Hyundai, so not up to speed on this type of stuff.

In the 2012 model year, when I got my tech sedan, the electronics were essentially unchanged from the 2010 model year. The Sonata the same year had newer electronics and a touch screen.

Ahh. I didnt even look at the Sonata because of what the Genesis offers. I still love my Genesis though. Would just be a slap in the face of us owners if they did that, esp for new buyers to Hyundai who arent brand loyal yet. I buy new cars every few years and was a Dodge guy (still am, but the new SRT8's still arent out) and I bought 3 cars over 10yrs from them...didnt even look at other brands...if Hyundai wants people to be like that, they will need to make sure their #2 car is taken care of just like their lower end cars.

What's the gas mileage you guys have been getting from your brand new 3.8 genesis?

Not to sound like a jerk, but this thread is about the Android Play and how Genesis is possibly (being drama king) screwing all us Genesis owners.

I'm sorry . I'm new to the forums. I'm looking for answers on my particular question. I have posted a thread and looked through others and have not been able to find the information in seeking. If you could post a link to a thread that would help me in my search, I will gladly post there. 😁
