Any golfers around here?

I assemble my own clubs. Don't really care for Ping. Some Callaway are 'ok'. I don't like any off the shelf drivers; all their shafts are too long.

SK Fiber shafts for graphite...IMHO by far the best...a smoothness you can easily feel. All the shafts come aligned so you don't end up with the logos all over the place. They have also been used by some long drive winners. Rifle shafts on the wedges. Would also use them in the irons but I prefer the graphite.

Putters are Nike unitized...again I love the feel. IMHO the apparently out of production 'Pinshot' is the best putting practice tool by an order of magnitude.

For heads I have a mix of Wishon and Dynacraft. Dynacraft was bought by Hireko a few years back and has gone no where since then. I prefer the zero offset of the Dynacraft Prophet hybrids...if anything I hook not slice and don't need an offset hosel to assist with the slice. The iron heads are CNC machined mild steel forgings. The Wishon CNC forgings are probably better. The wedges and woods are Wishons.

My grips are are Lamkin dual density torsion control.

The combination of the Wishon 919 driver with SK Fiber shaft and Torson Control grip at 43" is amazing. I have its MOI set to match my 7 iron.

oK....I had to bump this one..

As my username implies....I am a PING guy. Well, I have taken notice that Taylormade is outperforming every other company on the PGA Tour. Now, Im kinda curious to try some out.

I am looking at the Taylormade Burner Tour irons and the R7 TP irons. Have any of you played either one or know someone who does? I'd love some feedback but I do understand that this is a car forum and not a golf forum. Sorry if I wasted your time. :)

BTW....Supposedly, Tiger is back today!!! Im a Stewart Cink fan since he is from Muscle Shoals (about 30 min. away), but I find Tiger is an amazing golfer to watch. Everytime he makes a move I think to myself that I am witnessing history in the making...and I LOVE IT!

I have been playing for years and still try to get out as much as possible. Feet problems restrict me to about twice a week. I just got three TaylorMade R9 clubs - Driver, 3 and 5 Fairway Metals. I love them. My normal swing for many years has resulted in a fade that turns into a hook on occasion but adjusting the R9 clubs has me hitting a fade when I want. I would recommend them without reservation.

As the years pass, my Index has gone up from a 5 to an 11, but I have seen some improvement lately. I play on getting R9 Irons next month.m

SK Fiber shafts ARE awesome. They are made in Huntsville, AL (about 30 min. drive). Every year, they have a booth at Demo Days at Madison Golf and I always make a point to check them out!

Well folks, as I mentioned in another thread (cant find it) I am a Nike guy now. I have the Victory Red Split-Cavity forged irons 3-pw and the Victory Red wedges 52, 56 and 60. I have 3 drivers, 2 of which stay in the bag. Nike Dymo 2 STR8-Fit with 11.5 deg and stiff shaft and a 09 Burner 9.5 X-flex. I play the Burner when the wind picks up for the LOW ball flight and 40 yards of roll...HA! I only have a one rescue club and its a Burner 18 degree. Im good for about 250 and some roll off the deck with my driver so I have no reason to have a fairway metal. I have the Nike Unitized Tiempo blade putter with a HUGE Winn grip.

I play either the Nike Vapor or Taylormad RED TP balls. However, on slighly frozen turf, I hit the Rock Flight XL's for the 500 yards of roll. ;) HA!

Anywho, Ill play those for the year and then sell it all on ebay and try something else...thats just what I do. Its like buying a new car every year! I love it!:D

Thanks for resurrecting this old thread!

I LOVE golfing myself, but I'm far from being good at it.
I learned(from my dad's friend) how to swing when I was 11, but never played since until maybe 4 years ago.
Didn't get a chance to get professional help, I seriously think I need one these days.
Best I've shot was a 90 at Waldorf-Astoria golf course in Orlando.
Normally I'm always 20~25

Currently what I have in my bag;
TM burner driver, tour burner FW, rescue 22, TM R7 irons, Titleist Vokey 54 & 60, and Scotty Studio

I know there's something wrong with my swing, but can't figure out what's wrong for the hell of it.
Anyone willing to give me a free lesson? :D

Nice clubs you got there!!! Thats a good start!

Hey Dan!!! I give lessons on the side...but remember...Im no pro. I know what to do...just doing it is the hard part...HA!

How you grip the club...is your personal preference. What feels best to you. I personally use a baseball grip.

Next would be ball contact. Get yourself a mat and a net and strictly work on good contact with the ball. (At this point, dont worry about whether the ball goes left or right...you can work on that later.) You will know when you hit the sweet spot...so try and repeat that feel. ALWAYS do this...especially before a round.

Next would be if you tend to slice the ball (which is about 75% of all of us). Address your ball at the tee box with your driver. Look at the ball. Now, look to your left (if your right-handed) should be the green/fairway and behind the ball, the remainder of the tee box. Think of the green being at 12:00 and the tee box behind you at 6:00. Now swing your club from 7:00 to 2:00. This will promote a draw spin on the ball. If you constantly hook the ball go from 5:00 to 11:00.

With irons, a way to work the ball would be to open or close your stance to promote either a draw (open) or fade (closed).

Next would be club selection around the greens. ALWAYS CHIP up and on with an 8 or 9 iron and get the ball rolling (using a putting stroke). Only use your high lofted clubs if you need to get over a hazard or to put a lot of spin on the ball because of a green that slopes away from you.

Putting...good luck...all I can say is get a good feel of how the greens will roll buy utilizing the practice green. (this is where I struggle most, I dont have that "TIGER VISION"):o

Well, those are my thoughts for the day. Good luck with it and STAY IN IT!!! Don't ever let a bad shot ruin the game for you. Your next shot presents a new opportunity to hit a GREAT shot! :D

Thanks! :)
If I have decent clubs, I can't blame the club for a poor shot, now can I? :D

I think this is where I'm struggling the most.
I'm about 5'10", 175lbs. driver swing speed about 85mph.

For some reason, all my shots have a high trajectory. Even the driver tends to drive the ball higher than normal.
That's why I switched to a 9.5 degree, stiff flex driver recommended by a staff at Golfsmith.

What's more bothering is that the ball strike point is towards the inside(towards the shaft).
I used a sticky paper supplied at Golfsmith to see where the ball hits on impact.
No matter what club, irons or driver, I always hit the ball with the inside of the club face.
Even when I align the ball further away intentionally to offset the sweet spot, I'm dead even on the same spot.
Well, it could be a good thing that I'm consistent, but boy is it hard to correct!

I know about this since I've heard so many times from other golfers.
I wish my swing can be shaped the way I wanted it to be.
You should know better how hard this could be. :D

A friend of mine who's a single handicapper told me the same thing.
The thing is, I'm so used to chipping with my 54 or 60 degree wedge, that it seems to be easier for me than to use 7, 8, or 9 irons.
I know this is something I should learn, so I'll make sure to practice with the 8/9 irons next time.

Thanks for the encouragement, PINGGOLF.
I play every weekends as far as the weather allows.
Can't wait to go out and play another round. :)

Shot a 94 yesterday.... not bad for taking the clubs out about 15 minutes before I played. My first practice swing on the Tee Box 1. To my amazement I only lost 2 balls all day. I also had 4 par puts that were less than 2' from the hole which I pulled.

Last year I pushed a lot of my putts, now I'm pulling them....

Hey! You kept it under 100! That's great! ...especially with hardly no warm up!

Sounds like you have your irons pretty much spot on! We just need to work on that putter! Think about it, had you holed those 4 putts that were within 2 feet and just had one more good putt, you could have hit in the 80's!!!

I had the similar experience this weekend on a spur of the moment golf outing. I got a call at 6:30 Sat. morning to go play golf (the wife was fit to be tied) so I let my wife go back to sleep and I flew to the golf course. The tee time was booked and pre-paid and one had to back out. No warm up, 2 off the first tee and I shot a miraculous 77. How...I couldnt tell you! My best shot of the day was when I drove a 315 yard green (yes, it was slightly down hill) and managed to sink a long putt for eagle!

Its days like that, that keep you coming back for more! Aint Golf Great! HA!

Things I can only dream of.
I'm not a long driver, so the only eagle opportunity for me would be to ace a par3.
BTW, I saw my first hole-in-one when my buddy did it couple of weeks ago.
OMG, it was crazy. I consider myself lucky to even see one like that in person.
My goal is to break 90 this season. Wish me luck! :)

Well, the year is up and with that its time to sell all and buy new! This is something I do just about every year and it really keeps the game interesting to me!

As my "handle" implies, PING was my club of choice for a few years but they got beat out by NIKE this past year.

Well, the Victory Red Split-Cavities have been sold on ebay along with my VR wedges, putter and bag.

Overall, I sold everything for nearly $1100.

This weekend I invested in Acushnet Company which owns Titleist and Cobra!

After checking out the Golf Digest HOT LIST...here is my new setup:

Cobra WHITE GT Cart Bag
Cobra S2 Driver
Cobra S2 Fairway
Cobra Baffler TWS 19 Hybrid
Cobra S2 MAX irons 4-GW (OMG...golf is SO EASY!!!)
Cleveland CG15 56 and 60 (DROP and BACK UP BABY)
Scotty Cameron California Series Coronado putter (ain't Fathers Day amazing!)
White Cobra Hat and towel...HA!

Today I shot a 79!

Let me know if any of you have got some new sticks!

Any thoughts on the Adams hybrids. Either the A3OS or the A7OS.

I dont play that often but want to play more and I thought at age 57 that they might improve my game by being more foregiving..

I presently have a homemade set that is 20 years old and whenever I play everyone says I should update my clubs to improve my game.

As you get older you're not as flexible. Either start stretching more (yoga is great) or get new clubs with more flexible shafts as your swing speed has diminished. No matter what you do I recommend a couple lessons. The most expensive clubs in the world won't make you play any better--

Adams hybrids are awesome and sit right next to the Cobra Bafflers (not the RAIL bafflers).

Personally, I would go for the A7OS with forgiveness being the main bargaining point.

Using clubs that are homemade and 20 years old will really add insult to injury. Today's technology has jumped leaps and bounds over stuff that is only 5-7 years old.

Your NEVER too old to have lessons...but in reality, after 57 years...you're pretty much set in your ways...a lot worse than I at 30.

My simple advice and take it for what its worth.

Save up $300-400. Purchase a set of clubs that are hybrid like and let the club do the work.

Here are some choices:

Adams Idea A70S MAX
Callaway Diablo EDGE
Cobra S2 MAX (This is what I just bought at $399 New)
Mizuno MX-1000
Ping Rapture V2

Make sure you GET FITTED...which is usually FREE if your truly looking to buy a set of clubs.

The USGA has limits on what a club can actually achieve and so today's clubs cannot (legally) hit any further than clubs produced 5 years ago...however, they can help you hit it straighter and with more ease than the clubs of late. Look at it this way; I would say that 75% of all golfers shoot 80 and above. 15% shoot in the low to mid 70's. 10% are TOUR grade players who shoot SUB-PAR on a daily basis. Now, if I were in the club-making business...who do you think my target audience would be??? Right, those 75%. Todays clubs are built with people like you and me in mind and the manufacturers splurge a little and build a few clubs for the tour and low handicap players...which is why BLADES and FORGED clubs are so expensive...lack of demand.

Over the next few weeks...make sure you check a few extra items off that "honey-to-do" list and go get you some clubs you can hit! Its also a great way to excercise especially if you WALK 9 holes...or even 18 if you can!

Sorry this is so long but I have a passion for golf and helping people hit that one shot that keeps em coming back!;)

PingGolf,

Thanks you so much for your response. This will definitely be helpful as I start my search for new clubs. I believe hybrids are definitely the way to go for me.
I definitely will try to find a pro shop that will let me try them out before I buy.

Don't get hybrids unless you are fat, uncoordinated and have an index of over 30. Let someone measure you for clubs. The shaft is more important than any brand name.

I respectfully disagree.

I wouldn't consider 210 fat, my index is around 13 and I LOVE my hybrids! That's why I'm a 13 rather than an 18. I had trouble hitting my 3 & 4 irons.

Getting FIT for clubs is the first and most important step! Remember that the shaft is the engine of the club and without the right engine your ball will not travel the way you would like for it to.

I live in TX and only play 3 to 4 days a week. I live in a golf comunity and hop in the Club Car and about a 2 minute drive I am at the #1 tee. I make my own clubs, right now I am hitting Bang Centercut irons with 4.6 Rile shafts and Wishon 4 and 7 woods and a Bang Mellow Yellow Square drive and a Tour Swing driver depending on my mood on which I take with me. Just got the Genesis a couple of weeks ago and love it.

Welcome to GenesisOwners! :welcome:

For what its worth...I'm jealous! I told my wife that our next house will be within "golf cart distance!":p

Golfer here in Central Florida, favorite course at the moment is Bethpage Black, and condition wise the best I have played is Frederica in Sea Island, GA stimped at a 13 when I played.

I have played Frederica. That course is still maintained in near Augusta shape.

Ocean Forest is on Sea Island, (really the same island just divided by a river), and is a much greater test of golf.

I am a 6 index, playing Titleist AP2 irons, with Ping G5 driver (old, now, but I get club tested, and it's still the best club I hit), and a 10 year old 3 wood I still hit the daylights out of. Can't give it up no matter what they say about old clubs.

Biggest heartbreak is this is the first year in 10 my handicap is going up. I had it down to 3.2 index last year. Just haven't been able to practice as much. But I do live on a golf course, here, and will walk out my garage to a 7th Tee, and play 9 holes back home.

I hope I never have to trade that luxury.
