  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Left a deposit on a 2010 4.6L at dealership on Friday. Will be going to finalize purchase today. Car has about 40K. Anything critical I need to know? Any reason I should not buy this car? Thank you very much in advance.

I should note that the carfax shows a poor oil change history. But the car was owned by one owner, a professional. Probably changed oil a some place other than dealership.

What kind of professional? I'm sure if I decide to let go of my Genesis that it'll show a poor oil change history. Reason being is I change it myself.

Doctor. I don't think he changed the oil himself. :-)

Make sure it has some good riding tires on it. Threads here on this forum can help you with that info.

How do you know he was a doctor? Let me guess, the salesman told you?

When you say poor oil change history, what exactly do you mean?

Take the vin to a hyundai dealer and ask if they will write an extended warranty (hyundai platinum protection plan). If you cannot get the extended warranty, do not buy the car.

If it is Titanium/Black Tech VIN#...109795 then it was mine. Synthetic oil and lots of highway miles. Nothing wrong with change intervals nor the car. Traded it for 2015 V8 Ultimate. The 2010 was fantastic - dare I say perfect. You won't find a better one: garaged, non-smoker, hand wash/wax. I highly recommend purchasing it - best car I have ever owned and wife still misses it.:D

Buy it and enjoy! I have the 4.6L. Had it since July and I LOVE it! Curious how it'll handle snow, ice, the typical weather we get in Winter in StL/Central IL area.

I get asked a lot of the time (by idiots who know nothing about cars) if it is a Bentley (the winged logo) or a Benz (based on the front grill). I have the full package its awesome, Decent mpg, lots of goodies, and plenty of speed and zip. Probably look like a rich ***** being I'm in college but I know I bought the car with my own money so who cares what people think. You owe and drive it, so love it

I've got one. Worst car I've ever owned. I've had it in the shop no less than 20 times in the 2.5 yrs I've owned it. Now I've got a problem with the interior lights (again). Used to be they wouldn't come on..... now that won't go off..... and this is after they "fixed" it.

Service writer told me I needed to drive it more often in order to have few problems (?)!! I only drive ~ 6K miles/yr.

Once they told me one of my many issues would be worse in cold weather... don't remember the issue but what kind of stupid answer is that !!

Another time they had my car for a week and couldn't duplicate the problem.... and I couldn't get it to NOT have the problem.... they wanted to keep it a few more days.... I told 'em NOPE, I was coming to get it because I needed my car.... made an appointment a few weeks later to give them another chance to fix this POS and they said I picked it up "early" last time and were not interested in my business....

So, that's my experience with this POS car.... BTW, it's THE most repaired Genesis sedan of all model years. The 2011 was the least..... the early model 5.0L engines had oil consumption problems but I understand they fixed that sometime during the model year. It was their first attempt at GDI which was reported as being the issue.

But, the 2010 isn't GDI and thank gawd, mine uses no oil. However, it does have other issues. I hope you got the CPO with that little warranty that comes with it for being a CPO.

Slider, thanks for the response. Was still at the dealership (in the process of purchasing) when you posted--it made me feel better.

homeofstone, thanks for the response and advice. My used car came with relatively new high performance all-season tires--Michelins Pilot Sport A/S 3. I would assume that the Genesis should ideally have grand touring tires. But I am stuck with these for a while. They seem very good (for South Florida), though my first reaction was that they were too firm. Looking at reviews/forums, they have gotten good press, save for the fact that some have complained about premature wear; e.g.:
"I put the tires on the car in April 2014 at 28,004 miles. The car now has 47,690 miles on it. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires lasted less than 18 months and less than 20,000 miles. I do not drive like a maniac (at least I don't think so). Those miles are mostly open highway miles. I do very little city type driving. The tires were rotated twice and the pressures were maintained in accordance with the door placard. The tires were never damaged or abused. No burnouts. No skidpads. No turning doughnuts. No routine hard braking or cornering, etc. I would find it very hard to recommend a tire with that kind of rapid treadwear." (mbca.org)

Huddleston, thanks for the response and encouragement!

Mark 888, point well taken. In this case however, I had googled the vin number and it had returned the owner's name, before going to the dealership. (In fact, when I went to the dealership, I was first told that this was so and so's trade-in, and I was able to reply, no, this was so and so's car.

As far as oil changes, there is a 16 mos/17K miles gap with no maintenance/oil changes, per Carfax--see below excerpt. Could have been a professional too busy to have oil changed. A bit scary.

Date Mileage Details

04/15/2014 30,473
Brake fluid flushed/changed
Brake light switch replaced
Window switch replaced

08/23/2012 13,013
Maintenance inspection completed
Fluids checked
Oil and filter changed
Tires rotated

Genentec, thanks for the response/advice. Was very tempting (and still is), but (so far have) decided against it for the following reasons:
1. One reviewer called the extra power "overkill." And the 4.6L is awfully quick.
2. Price differential between a 2010 4.6L and 2013 5.L R-Spec is significant--approaching $10K (though, of course, the latter comes with lower miles and warranty).
3. Many reviewers said the 8-speed in-house transmission was slower than they would prefer. Nobody had complained about the ZF transmission in the 4.6L.
4. Gas consumption a possible red flag (despite the argument that anybody buying this car should not be looking at gas mileage). Car & Driver only got 16 mpg, vs. 23 for the 4.6L, though it could have been an aberration or is not representative: ". . . we saw just 16 mpg over 1200-plus miles of mixed driving. That’s far below the 23 mpg achieved by our long-termer and its six-speed auto, and in the cellar of the R-Spec’s EPA city/highway ratings of 16/25."
5. The ride might be too firm for a daily driver luxury sedan which is not driven mostly on highways (though I personally don't really mind a firm ride).
(This is what I had come up with, going on memory.)

Gunkk, thanks for the response/advice. I had bought the car already by the time you posted, but this was apparently good advice. I am in fact dealing with a significant enough mechanical issue as we speak. Will let you know if it gets resolved. I had in fact inquired about an extended warranty at time of purchase, but they were only offering one from "The Mechanic," not Hyundai. They were supposed to get back to me about the latter, but never did. Will follow up on the latter, and see.
