Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Hey folks, I just bought my 2019 G70 Elite 3.3t a few days ago, used and certified from a Hyundai/Genesis dealer with 14k miles on the clock. I too suffer from sunroof clunk. First, I love the car, handles great!!, is fast, and is really stuffed with tech and is just a beautiful car. The clunk is not great, but for the price I got the car, it doesn't bother me very much. The badly juddering brakes and out of balance tires are far more of a concern. But I have high hopes that I'll be able to get the sunroof adjusted as per Gen of huntington beach/TSB kit from Genesis. My philosophy about this is, it will be a relatively easy, specific process or adjustment. If not, then I am done, it's not worth losing the car for weeks for or months, or having the ENTIRE interior removed and replaced, or sunroof replaced. That's all absolutely looney tunes to do, imo, for this clunk. It would be easier to sell the car than go through all of that, sheesh. It's not that bad. I understand it's all relative to you plural, but I am pretty zen on this one, but it is there nonetheless. I do have confidence the dealer can fix or alleviate most of it.

Note - it only really happens on city streets, on rough / very rough roads / driving in parking lots, going over slight elevation difference between individual tires. Does not do it on the hwy, or smoother roads in town. Cooler temps make it less likely to occur.

Do you any specific info on this TSB kit?

As the weather in Chicago has been in the 60's and 70's the last couple of days, I'm noticing that when the sunroof glass is a little warm or hot from the sun, there is a popping noise (like a big raindrop hitting the sunroof glass) that happens every 20 seconds to 1 minute. It goes away on a 60 degree day after 10 mins of driving, as the wind cools the sunroof, but is persistent at temps of 70 or above. Often, at the very beginning of the drive the popping is accompanied by consistent rattling, much like you see in the Stinger videos, though not quite as loud. Sounds like metal on metal.

The felt tape fix I found on the Stinger forum, and @mrcleeaan 's fix no longer working, though it worked for winter temps.

When the glass is cool, it is perfectly stable, no movement, no noises. When hot, one quarter of the whole glass on the front passenger side corner has a little bit of give, and you can faintly hear a sound when pressing on it from the outside. Pushing the glass up from the inside yields the same movement, and little bit of sound. The movement is probably under 1mm. I tried adding more felt tape to the area @mrcleeaan and Stinger owners mentioned, and that did not help.

Other observations:

  1. The noise does not seem to go away when the sunroof is open a little, or even half way, but only when fully open, leading me to believe the problem likely isn't at the very front of the glass.
  2. The noise goes away after it has rained, even if the sunroof is still warm/hot.
  3. This is definitely NOT headliner related.
  4. All seals and anything resembling rubber on the sunroof have been lubed with Shin-Etsu.
  5. There is TONS of good white lithium grease on all of the metal.
Curious if you guys have any ideas, or experienced substantially similar noises/conditions. Any help would be appreciated. Especially if any Texas (or other hot state) owners had a similar noise and fixed it , I'm very curious about what ended up working.
this is my rattle exactly. Goes away when sunroof is fully open, or in rear 'vented' position. Have not been to the dealer yet.

No, this info was garnered from this thread, or another, where several members went in and the dealer indicated a kit for adjustments was available, and also, that a Tech at Genesis of Huntington Beach knew how to solve the issue.

Thanks for the info. That is my purchasing dealing and if I must have warranty work would be who I use.
So I got some good news today - they told me that they were able to get some kit to adjust the brackets and lubricate the tracks and glass and it fixed the noise. They were able to avoid a full replacement and I was able to get the car back today. Didn't hear any noise on the drive back home so here's hoping it stays that way.

All in all it was a good experience and they treated me well and kept me informed throughout the process.

As @ryan_g (I think) said, Hyundai/Genesis Huntington Beach has tech's that know how to fix it. I'd suggest having your local dealers call them if they can't fix it

Took mine in the other day and the tech (Tri) knew exactly what to do. Turned out to just be an adjustment issue, but I know this much: I can now actually open the sunroof shade without being constantly annoyed by every motion

My sunroof rattle reappeared. The sticky foam tape (mrcleean, thank you) had been mooshed out of place. I removed it and retaped the "foot" rest area. I also put a smaller piece at 90º across the spot for a double coverage. Improved. I can keep doing this for a long time. I still have 98 feet of foam tape.
Hey man - do you have a picture of the areas taped up, and how you did it? I don't want to screw my sunroof up, necessitating an expensive repair. This is so annoying I"d be willing to drop like 500 to 10000 bucks on a shop to diagnose and fix. It would cost more to sell the car.

Some on the Kia Stinger forum found this also. mrcleean posted this and I followed his instructions. I recently retaped after the tape mooshed out somewhat. I despise making a kludge fix on a new car but after reading the disaster of several owners who had a headliner removed and sunroof replaced without resolution I have accommodated myself to this situation.

Yeah man, I am all up for an adjustment with tools from Genesis and instructions, and maybe instructions from another dealer, but I really don't want my headliner dropped, or interior taken out (craziness). *Although* it seems some of these disasters were because the dealer and his/her people just sucked at working on this type of thing. Others seem to be much better/much more experience, and are able to replace the entire sunroof (albeit with help from glass places and body shops) without major or even minor disaster. But that is not ideal. But yeah, I'll either fix it myself using your awesome discoveries (and others) or hopefull the dealer can achieve nirvana with a simple fix. We'll see, I'll post results / diagnoses in a week or three.

But thanks again bud, for your contributions, and the other problem solvers.

Well, so much for my optimism. My dealer says Genesis 'kit' fixes didn't work, and the Genesis of Huntington Beach folks are simply putting a shim in on the bracket/bracket foot a la mcclean fix. They wanted to find a more permanent fix, they said, so they are keeping my car over the weekend and will talk to the Genesis techline monday and see what additional info they can garner.

Too bad the kit didn't work, but at least they're still looking at it and engaging with Genesis tech support. Maybe they'll figure it out. (Trying to be optimistic 😉)

I really don’t think there’s a fix. I had to pick up and drive the car around after the last fix, before surrendering it for the buyback. The headliner wasn’t put back right, neither were the cameras/sensors behind the rear view mirror. It made much more noise than before.

Brought my 2019 G70 Sport just shy of 7k miles to the dealer on Monday for oil change and to check out the sunroof because I was having the rattling issue mentioned here. They just told me yesterday that they have a new sunroof being ordered because they weren't able to fix the rattle in the shop.

At least they gave me a 2.0t loaner - however I have to say...the turbo lag on the 2.0 is pretty bad in comparison to the 3.3t.
How was the end result? How did the car come back together? My dealer wants to do this, and they say it can be done, not a problem. I am extremely suspicious of the ability. They said they just did this to a sonata, and it was all good. They couldn't promise the front glass would not come off. This sounds like a nightmare in the making.

So they removed your front glass? WHat were the promises beforehand? My dealer insists they can do this, no problem. and if they f$%k something up, they will replace it.

What was the buyback process like? How was it engaged / Initiated?

I am not going to allow my dealership to attempt to fix my noisy sunroof unless Genesis has confirmed 100% they have a solution. Way too risky having them tear apart my new car. In the meantime, my foam tape has been working just fine. I have more than enough to share, just pm your address and I'll mail you some.

Thanks Mcclean, you are super helpful. I don't have any faith in the replacement, but i feel the path forward may be to let them do it, then it's either fixed, or it's screwed up and I can a initiate buyback process. It just may be the beginning of a long painful process that I have to follow to move towards a buyback. Stil undecided.

It's such an involved, dirty process I just don't see how they won't screw something up.

Circle:
You bought your car used as a CPO vehicle. Is it eligible for manufacturer repurchase? CPO coverage I understand. I am not aware of a repurchase of a car purchased used, though. Please confirm this status before you proceed, is my advice.

Good idea. I had assumed buyback was based on warranty, not purchase status (used vs new) eg - a vehicle has a warranty that makes promises. If the promises cannot be kept (repaired) then the law in most states requires the maker purchase the vehicle back, or make an equivalent trade for a repaired vehicle / vehicle that does not need a repair. Eg. buybacks - I think - are a matter of law, and maker willingness. I mean, every state has lemon laws on the books, and those are based on warranty, I thought? Or at least, I always thought. It is a good idea to check, for sure.

Well, I am moving ahead with the replacement. My dealer says they do this all the time, and the finished result will be perfect in terms of trim, damage, other newly-instroduced issues, and if it's not, they will work on the car until it is. So, promises are what they are, and we will see. I just don't see another path forward if I want this issue actually resolved. The stinger guys have had good luck with this, so fingers crossed at like 3000 psi.

Good luck! Keep us posted and let us know what it is they are doing to fix the rattle. 👍
