  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

What was the final resolution?
My dealership was able to make an adjustment to the rails and I believe added some padding or something that solved the problem - until two weeks ago, when the rattle returned. The dealership that did this (Huntington Beach Genesis) was fantastic, but unfortunately have had their franchise taken away and can no longer work on my car. Hoping another dealership will go through the same effort they did to fix it again.

To the people who have the sunroof noise only when it's hot, did the dealer provide any solution? I'm bringing my car in for service and I'm debating if I should bring it up. It only happens when it's hot out (and it's incredibly annoying when it does), but on cool days, it's totally fine. Heading into fall/winter, I'm not sure if I should kick this can down the road or have them look at it.

Thanks!
Sorry, I never took mine to the dealer about the popping/crackling noise when hot, figuring they wouldn't be successful. Now, a year later, I haven't heard it, even with the hot summer we had (although I didn't drive it as much this summer either).

Thanks for the reply! That gives me hope that if I just leave it, maybe it will fix on its own...

It's truly a bizarre issue when it's temperature based. The noise is incredibly annoying but I have a bigger fear of them making the issue worse by disassembling everything.

Thanks again!

My dealer put in a new sunroof, and it's completely quiet. 2 weeks now, it also stopped any noises I had from the sunroof when going over transitions, like street to driveway. etc.

Thanks for letting me know! Was yours temperature based as well or did it always make noise?

I have G70 3.3T AWD...I’ve had sunroof noise since I got it, but in Nov 2019. I took it in and complained but it only happened when it was hot inside the car, they could not hear the rattle. I do not drive the car very much because it was a special car kind of like a Sunday only car. We took it back a number of times they finally heard the noise took out the headliner one time took out some clips and change them now they want to replace the entire sunroof. They cannot do it they want to send it to a body shop and they might have to do repairs to the paint or whatever. It is now September and it is not fixed. I feel it would take the value of my car away if I let them replace the entire sunroof. Has anyone else had their sunroof replaced or do you know if it takes down the value? They kept my car for over 38 days on one visit.
they have had it around 90 days all total since Nov. and now they want to rip out my sunroof! I read somewhere they did that but the noise returned. I need to know if that’s happened to anybody else THANKS

What are you going to do about it, I’m new to this forum.
The plastics are weird. It does it mostly when very hot and humid, like rainstorm weather in the south, but not always. 70% of the time it's quiet. I think it would take a new console, all new plastics, all replaced - center stack, cubby, entire middle area around the gearshift. that is my best guess. Perhaps automotive felt between the parts that touch, dealers use that to tame parts that rub against each other.

This may not be true, but I feel there must have been a recent TSB or something about the sunroof, because my dealer had a process, where the end of the process/flowchart is 'new sunroof' if the previous attempts fail (my dealer tried bracket adjustments, and was unwilling to do the foam because they said it would render the sunroof unusable, basically).

But it was a specific and fast process, I felt like they were following something corporate because they were so unequivocal about the sunroof, and also, it was not a hassle. Lol. That's mainly why I felt they were following a dictate from the suits at home.

My dealer used a glass place and body shop that does this all the time, and they did a great job. Putting the headliner and pillars back correctly, well, that was a different story, but after another visit and some time at the detailer and back at the body shop, those after-issues were also resolved. These things are always a process, and you have to the patience to work through them via several visits if you want your problems actually resolved. IMO.

How would anyone know your sunroof was replace, generally speaking? Does it show up on Carfax?

Anything that happens to your car is supposed to be reported to carfax I thought, if they say it’s broken and fix it with a new sunroof that they cannot do they said they would send it out to a body shop... that seems like someone should know. It’s not original.

Carfax picks up any transcription of work or damage from public records, and then they also seem to get service records. If they write it up as a replaced sunroof, then it will be there.

well, if that happens, that's when you call genesis corporate, and start a process.

I thought car fax got most of their info from the insurance underwriting data base? A warranty claim should not generate a finding. When my G37 got hit and totaled, my insurance company pulled a report I have never seen before. Mostly every state inspection record, mileage at the time and pass or fail for the last 9 years. That car had never been in an accident and only at the dealer a few times back when new for warranty work and none of that info was in the insurance report. I used the insurance report to my advantage to show I had a unique, no issue well cared for and low mileage car that did not exist in the market place to be able to price compare values to. After arguing I got a good amount above book value.

So I got some good news today - they told me that they were able to get some kit to adjust the brackets and lubricate the tracks and glass and it fixed the noise. They were able to avoid a full replacement and I was able to get the car back today. Didn't hear any noise on the drive back home so here's hoping it stays that way.

All in all it was a good experience and they treated me well and kept me informed throughout the process.

To update - the rattle is back and more annoying than ever. I'll have to find some time to bring it back into the shop I guess. Bummer!

Ultimately, Carfax data is only as good as the source, and if the source is inaccurate, or can lie through omission, then well, there you go. Carfax should always be taken with a grain of salt. I would never trust a Carfax completely at all.
