If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

After seemingly resolving the headliner-when-hot issue, and attempting the squidgy-tape-on-rail fix without success, my sunroof has now started creaking really badly. I'm pretty fed up and made a service appointment on Tuesday. Honestly, whether they can resolve this will probably determine whether I'll get another Genesis after this lease is up.

Not that this is just a Genesis problem, to be fair. In all my time, I've only had one car that did not have any rattles at all, and it was my 2015 Civic Si. Still, it really compromises my enjoyment of the car when I'm constantly listening for annoying noises.
They are gonna have to replace it, I believe.

They're telling me they can't hear it tapping and creaking (although they did admit to hear the clicking steering wheel noise). I know damn well it's making noise; it was doing it when I pulled over the uneven dip going into the freakin dealership service bay.

Ironically they gave me a loaner with no sunroof. What are the chances I can just tear the roof off that one and replace mine with it?

You may want to try another local dealer if you have one nearby. If not, I would reach out to Genesis directly in California and secure relief.
Does not sound like you are being taken care of by your dealership and I am certain that is not what Genesis is trying to obtain during this time of brand development.
Genesis is aware of the sunroof issues and will make it right for you. Sounds like your dealer is the obstacle.
My dealership was completely aware of the issue and consulted with Genesis on the repairs. It was Genesis that suggested a new sunroof be placed into to remedy the noise after other attempted fixes.

I took a video of mine with my phone to show the service department. Mine was pretty noisey, though.

Hey everyone. I'm new here (Just bought a 2020 g70 Prestige 3.3 AWD two weeks ago), but I have had all of these issues. There is a very noticeable crackling/ popping noise across the entire headliner, and it seems to be worse when warm. I took it to my dealer twice. First time they said the dreaded "Couldn't replicate issue" and then finally had the service manager ride with me the second time and he admitted he heard it. I just got it back this past Friday and they said they dropped the headliner and could hear the problem, and that holding the passenger side roof handle solved the problem across the headliner(it didn't). Genesis told them not to replace the handle because they seem to be aware of it and its faulty, but the crackling and popping sounds on the driver side at the sun visor and across the headliner doesn't change when holding the handle, so idk what they were hearing. I even sent them the link to this forum and recorded it.

I'm thinking of reaching out to Genesis directly. The dealer could have at least put more tape or felt on the clips or something. My ocd is killing me and my ears are hurting from having to have the radio up the whole time lol. Sounds like the roof is falling apart in a 50k car. They said they couldn't do anything else because they were basically working for free for two days.

Then I backed out the driveway this morning heard 4-5 knocks of the sunroof, but nothing the rest of the way to work. You gotta be kidding me. Anyone know what to do?

Man, I had man replaced it was so bad, rattled constantly while driving, but my smaller sunroof noises expanded after that was fixed by the replacement. Everytime I go up or down a transition it creaks and pops. Plus, lots of little vibrations from and noises from the sunroof plastics, I may try to have them replace my headliner now, except the back window glass has to come out for that, and my interior will get trashed. Have you looked at some of the fixes here? It appears to be a glue that loses adhesion in warm weather, from what I read here.

I'm driving a 3.3T Advanced loaner without a sunroof while my car is in for the creaking and the clicking steering issue. I tell you... I'd almost give up the quilted leather, HUD and other doo-dads for this kind of quiet.

Last I heard I'm still being given a "cannot-replicate" on the sunroof, which is ridiculous because it's plain as freakin day.

I almost wonder if some of the sunroof issue is related to a lack of chassis rigidity? Convertibles have stiffened body areas to account for loss of rigidity from not having a roof so wonder if the Genesis Engineers just cut a hole in the roof and slapped a sunroof in or if they beefed up any areas to account for body flex and roll while going over uneven surfaces? Our unibody construction has panel areas that are bonded with adhesive instead of spot welded. Don’t know if that makes any differences or not but would think probably not?

Adding sunroof/panoramic roof will certainly decrease the car body rigidity a lot. From example in BMW vehicles, adding sunroof typically decrease the car body static rigidity by 10-15%; For the latest Lincoln Continental, adding the dual-pane moonroof decreases the body rigidity by a whopping 32%.

I believe Hyundai/Genesis knows this fact, it is just a matter if they are willing to spend extra cost on this (whether this expense make sense financially). For a car model that more units are sold without the sunroof than w/ the sunroof, it is highly possible that the auto maker will "let it be" and not spend extra effort to arrange special treatment for units with the sunroof option - due to the fact that this costs a considerable amount of money, and makes the manufacturing process more complicated, but will just please a small portion of the consumer.

Therefore we see complaints in G70s with sunroof, and G80s with panoramic roof. Luckily for G90, there is no such option to choose from, so we rarely hear similar complains from the G90 society.

Despite the sunroof, the G70 seems to have a fairly stiff chassis. Compared to my last BMW (F30 3 series), which was creaky as hell, my Genesis is quiet and solid as a rock. Although I have had the sunroof popping noise in the past on days over 80 degrees, I don't think this is due to a lack of chassis rigidity, or it wouldn't only do it when hot. Also, not all cars seem to exhibit it. By contrast, I was so surprised at the creaks emanating from my 2014 BMW that I went to two dealers and checked out numerous other cars on their lots. They all made the same creaking and squeaking noises when I drove them and whenever I applied pressure around the center stack or the overhead controls or the door panels.

I just wonder .. Do all the car have panorama sunroof should have noises in sunroof like bmw or mercedes ? or just genesis?

Had the car in for service in June for the sunroof rattle. Dealer was aware of the issue and attempted a fix, worked for 3 days and began to rattle again. Needed the car for road trip and some other stuff so did not get back to dealer until October for fix. They attempted to fix it again and were unsuccessful. Dealer is ordering new sunroof tray assembly as advised by Genesis. Part will come from Korea. Estimated time 3 weeks. This should solve the problem. Hopeful.
As promised I wanted to circle back and update you all on the status of my vehicle repair for the sunroof rattle. Parts arrived 8 days ago and the car went into the shop. They pulled the sunroof glass, the sunroof headliner, the entire tray or track assembly for the sunroof and replaced it. The assembly looks slightly different than the original one but looks awesome. My dealership did an exceptional job on the service, I went over the car with a flashlight and fine tooth comb with the service manager, everything was exceptional. Not a rattle or squeak coming from it at all. True test will be when it get hot again this summer if the fix is legit! However at this point, I could not be happier and my car cabin is silent from rattles and squeaks. Very Happy!

I definitely have chassis flex, but my new sunroof has been quiet as a sleeping baby so far, three months in. I have a few other small clicks and pops with the headliner, but very negligible.

Had mine replaced once already. Still making rattling sound! Purchased new 36000 miles

Ah that sucks man, I heard it happens. Mine was installed in the warm months, and by a 3rd party company, I am betting they used their own installation products, and did not use the Hyundai glue, because it hasn't made a peep. TBH, if my sunroof noise comes back that car will be sold, can't effing stand that noise.

I am only at 24000, so we will see what happens at 36k. Honestly, I am so mad at myself for buying yet again another 1st gen, 1st year product. (did that in 2015 with GTI, and 2009 with G37). Never again.

Hyundai glue or 3rd party glue hard to figure that is a significant factor? Would seem Genesis and their engineering team would have figured something out if glue for the sunroof or peripheral headliner stuff really was the key here? Could be wrong? Seems if the factory built a vehicle and kept the head liner out so as you drive exact areas could be looked at and the root cause could be determined and a fix determined? I don’t see the issue being rocket science with the headliner being left out. If no noise then concentrate on the headliner itself.

Man, I don't know, but that is what one poster with the issue figured out, the Hyundai bonding agent (in his sunroof) seems to get too viscous in super hot summer temps, and allows the sunroof to shift. Makers make cost choices around materials engineering, and those choices always have a trade off (unless you're Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo, McClaren, etc.)

My sunroof issue was mechanical, so say the mechanics, and part broke that could not be removed, that was flopping around on every bump. I have a video. It's outrageously loud. So I think my fix will stick. The guys with the bonding issues, maybe not so much. Read back trough this thread, you will see the entire discussion.

It's n ot rocket science, but when you have 100 parts and processes attached to a part of a car, it could possibly be any one of them, or some weird combo + outside variables. It's tough. This shit gets figured over the model run, and by the 4th or 5th year, all of these issues are usually gone.

Sorry I have been silent as work, vacation, and frustration reigns on with this popping issue. After having my headliner replaced, I noticed some shop grime staining on some panels and my passenger seat belt. My grab handles in the back seat pull away from the roof it feels (not sure if it's normal yet). But my rattling persists. And my drama with getting it fixed also persists.
After waiting another month to hear from my repair shop. I finally called the corporate consumer line and started a case, pushing to have my issue escalated. I've been without my car for almost a month during all these repairs and am begging them to either buy it back or repair is asap. I'm currently stuck in a base model G70, while paying for a loaded US Design Edition effectively. Not happy.

My escalation was denied the other day because the car was in my possession, so I had to take it back in yesterday and get this loaner. Going back and forth with them, they are collecting all the data regarding my car and having an engineer contact my dealership's shop. At this point. I'm pushing for a buy-back and may step back from getting another one at this time. It's put a sour taste in my mouth. I hope to have an answer this week. I pray for everyone's sanity that has this issue. Especially if you have the cream color headliner like me! Black shop grime is your worst enemy!
Im in a 2020 kia Optima i have my headliner aka hardpiece not just the cloth i got my car back with dents in roof back seat not in properly bought my car 5/5/2020 and still battling this issue headliner still doesnt stay clipped into the clips but kia tech advised the service department to add glue oh no thats not what i purchased a new car for. Yes, this has definitely put a very sour taste in my mouth. Im back on the phone with kia Corp again this morning, since Nov i have received 3 tech case numbers bc somehow the others got closed.

Oh yeah. My dealer screwed up my headliner when they replaced my sunroof, and made it filthy. And dented my door. I made them clean up the mess with a detailer, and had them fix the dent with paintless dent guy, but I am battling them to replace the headliner currently. Basically my car was a CPO that clearly did not meet CPO standards, so if I can prove that then I can accuse them of fraud, and then see where we go from there.

However, the sunroof repair was fine, lol. They just broke everything else in the process. The patient died, but the operation was a success kind of situation.
