  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Do you happen to know the TSB Number you gave them or where I could find it? I just hit 4,500 miles in my 2020 g70 and my sunroof rattle has just begun. It is starting to heat up in my area, but this, along with the headliner popping/crackling, is just driving me insane. I just don't know what to do as my dealer seems clueless as well to both problems. I have the best warranty you can get and the thing is brand new, so this has to be covered.

I also wanted to ask if anyone had any creaks/popping/ rattling in the infotainment area under the climate controls and above the wireless charger/ usb area. I'd say mine happens 60-70% of the time, and once it starts, it normally conintues until I stop driving. I can press on the plastic under the climate controls, to temporarily help it, but it often continues. Every small bump makes it start. Anyone know of a similar problem or a fix?
Yes. My infotainment screen is very rattley.

Wow 34 pages since I wrote it! I guess I should read it over to see if there's a solution to fix the problem... it's been almost 3 years and it still rattles...

Bought a 2021 G70 and have a rattle in the sunroof area. Trying to get it fixed. Anyone else have that issue in their 2021 G70

Well, I did not read all 34 pages but I see our original poster (@Toronto driver ) is still having the issue, sigh! I was hoping to fast-forward and find that someone had a solution. I only have a little over 3k miles on my 2019 Elite 3.3T and the headliner rattle started a few weeks ago. It seems pretty consistent. It is not loud but I mostly drive with windows up and no radio (I like quiet) so it is quite annoying. I have found that if I lightly press up or lightly pull down on the driver front corner of the sunroof area it will stop.

Well I dropped it off and he said "you're here for oil and rotation correct?" I told him yes and I wanted the TSB reviewed for the sunroof (I brought a copy of it) and he acted like "what?"? So he left for a few minutes and came back and said, this is a labor intensive job and you're looking at $500++. I asked if they would lube the tracks like the previous shop would do during an oil change. He said "Sure, it'll be $65" I told him forget it. I'd go back to the other shop who does it for free.

I thought if there was a TSB from Hyundai, it was a covered fix? According to him, it's not covered.

So I guess I won't be using my sunroof anymore at this point.
Call Genesis, report the dealer, get a case number for your sunroof issue and go to another dealer if possible.

buddy, all of that is covered 900%, the dealers fight you sometimes. Call genesis, report the dealer issues and the dealer, get a case number for your issue, ask for their help with the dealer, or another dealer. Genesis marketing will call the marketing manager or dealer principle and give them and earful and then some.

yes. Not much though. My infotainment screen cracks and pops more.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. Sounds like my 2014 335xi, one reason I sold it. My G70 so far has only had the popping/crackling noise near the passenger A pillar and hand hold only when it's hot outside. Hope it doesn't get worse. I've got 15k miles.
I don't know the TSB #, but I would definitely get it and take it to the dealer. If they don't take care of it, contact Genesis. Although as you probably know, others in this forum have had varied success with that.
It's ridiculous to have to deal with this on a brand new car. Good luck.
That's funny. Throttlehouse was comparing a 2009 E90 M3 and a 2021 M3, and said that while the old M3 did it's 'bmw thing' of being creaky and rattly, that you can't hold that against it because soon enough the new will be doing it as well.

That's funny, I owned two E90 sedans (not M3s), 2006 and 2011, and both were rock solid and quiet. But my 2014 F30 drove me crazy. If you just pushed with one finger anywhere around the center stack controls, or the overhead console or the door controls you would get all kinds of creaking and squeaking sounds. Any little bumps in the road or even aggressive acceleration (including turning and braking, which are technically accelerating, haha) would do it also, in hot or cold temps. I began to think that maybe my certified car had been tracked or beaten on, but I tried some brand new ones out and they did the same thing. That's why I'm generally very pleased with my G70, since it has none of that, with the exception of the headliner popping noise, sometimes, on hot days only.

I noticed my infotainment screen creaking yesterday. I can still hear some roof noise, especially with the warmer weather, but it's not at its worst. Honestly, with a year left on the lease, I'm just going to try and not care. In any event, I now have baby seat mounting hardware in the back which makes its own rattles, so whatever.

Well, today was our first day of the year where temps got up to the 80s, and today was the first day in a year where the headliner in my G70 started making the annoying crackling sound, right on cue.
It's completely temp related, either due to thermal expansion of some component, or due to softening of an adhesive. The sunroof being open or closed makes NO difference, and the noise only comes from the passenger side, right around the top of the A pillar and the passenger grab handle. (Sorry, I know for most of us this is old news.) That's interesting, since there's no grab handle on the driver's side, and no noise. May be related.
I also found that pushing hard, sideways, on the headliner on the driver's side can cause the noise on the passenger side, like the side force is pulling the headliner shell away from the roof/body on the opposite side. Which again makes me wonder if the aggressive is giving way, maybe due to complications around the mounting of the passenger grab handle.

The odd thing here is why a savvy dealer or the factory have not determined root cause and a good fix? Some have had new sun roofs installed and I think new headliners too. How difficult can it be to analyze everything under the headliner and systematically find, since multiple people have said it’s temp related, the culprit? Temporarily remove the headliner and drive the car and see what happens? Hyundai is bound to have some smart factory folks to diagnose this? Would be interesting if Korean models have this same issue?

Agreed. I think most people are lousy troubleshooters. Once the headliner is removed I would expect you could find it, maybe even just by careful inspection.
I'm just not prepared to tear my headliner out, haha.

Ive had alot of success carefully sliding Neoprene foam in between the roof and headliner as you can see in the pictures below. I used a long thin flathead screwdriver and slid it in everywhere I could on the passenger side. All the way from the front, down the passenger side and even towards the back passenger corner of the sunroof. The glue or whatever it is making that tacky sound goes away once the headliner is more secured and doesnt have any play in it. So by putting the foam in there its basically tightening the tolerances of the headliner by pushing down on it making it more secure and moving around less.

I also created "bushings" for all of the grab handles that basically steps the handle away from the headliner enough to stop the noise from happening. I used 1/4" vacuum tubing and cut pieces like 1/2" long and put them over each screw in the handle. I also didnt go nuts screwing them back in. I screwed them back in to where it was tight and the handle wasnt loose, but not as tight as it can go.

Both of these methods have fixed my headliner noise issue nearly 100%. I havent heard it since doing these two things and I recommend anyone with the issue giving these things a try.

Wow, thanks for the tips and the photos. I may try that. Does the grab handle now stick out a bit from the headliner? Seems like it wouldn't sit flush - does it look funny? Might be a small price to pay anyway for the silence.
What did you have to remove to get in there? The door trim, A pillar cover??

No not really. They look the same as they did before. There's a recess or cut out in the headliner for the two flanges on the handle to sit down into so nothing bulges out or looks weird. And when I say not to tighten it all the way, I mean tighten down like 85-90% of all the way down. Dont leave it loose to the point where the handle moves around or looks obviously loose.

In order to remove youll have to hold the handle down, pop the flange cover open with a thin plastic pry tool or tiny flathead and then once the cover is down the screws are right there. The hardest part is wedging the pry tool or screwdriver in there to get the cover open. Theres a little access slit at the top of the cover that helps getting it open. You just have to try and be careful not to gouge the plastic when prying on it. Thats why a plastic trim/panel tool works best.

Taking my car in tomorrow for the sunroof rattle. The first time they applied the TSB grease and it helps a little but when it’s closed but I can still hear it rattling when the shade is open and it’s very loud when the sunroof is open. Only happens when it is warm outside as others have mentioned.

I also have the headliner that rattles on both sides of the car right next to the A pillar. I can actually push it in and hear it squeaking, like it’s not a good enough seal with a clip or glue or something.

It really cheapens the feel of a $50k “luxury” car and makes me think twice about buying Genesis again. I would feel better if I didn’t have to go to a Hyundai dealer for this service. Genesis needs to be its own established business if it wants to be a brand because walking into Hyundai is kinda strange when you supposedly bought a better car.

Just got back from the service department. Was told “dude it’s a rattle you can deal with it”

Genesis needs its own service department and dealer network. I’m tired of getting the $19,999 Hyundai Accent treatment when I take my car in. Until then, my car is nothing more than a Hyundai with more leather.

Dealership number two cancelled my appointment and wants to reschedule because they told me the wrong time. Talking to the service manager though I was told “chattering and noise in the sunroof are normal” and he basically told me they’re not going to fix anything.
