  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Holy shit I just test drove a stinger that had this issue, brand new with only had 20 miles and it was exactly like the sound of crunching plastic bottle! As soon as I went on a side road: cracking and popping above me. Insane how some of you can drive a car like that!!

Both sales rep and managers were completely oblivious to this issue and saying "oh I'm sure out service department can fix that no problem" /facepalm

Side note: ride wise I was less than impressed, the G70 drove much better, felt much more nimble.

Curious, was it hot outside?

Ha dmine replaced by Genesis in September of 2020, it's still working as expected and noise free.

So I just came across this thread because I am having the same issue. I never had this issue in my 2019 G70 3.3T however in my new 2022 G70 3.3T with less than 300 miles I am getting noise from the sunroof on slight bumps. I will schedule service for next week and provide feedback here.

For f**ksake, you'd think after two years they would have fixed this 🙄
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

It really annoys me when manufacturers fail to address common problems. The E36 generation of BMW 3 series was famous for its plastic water pump impeller. After about 60k miles the plastic would crack with no prior warning, causing the impeller to slip on it's shaft, resulting in engine overheating in minutes, often causing the head to warp. This design went unchanged for a decade. Bean counters 😝 You can say that 60k miles ain't bad, but most car's water pumps go 90k or much more without issue. I expected better from "German engineering". Sorry, I digress.

The worst part is that you got lulled into a false sense of security by never having the issue on the 2019.

Sorry about it man, hope they can fix it for you. I'm taking delivery of my G70 next month, nervous about this:(

Hello,

I just purchased a 2022 G70 3.3T last month and have this issue as well. What's odd is I test drove the exact car I purchased, TWICE and never heard this until I was taking it home.

I took it in for service and the tech said they defiantly heard it and would need the car about 1.5 days (fully covered of course), but they are out of any Genesis loaners due to the shortages. Hopefully within the next 1-2 weeks they get a loaner and they can fix it. I wasn't told the specifics of the "fix", but just that they need it for maybe 2 days tops.

Ive had alot of success carefully sliding Neoprene foam in between the roof and headliner as you can see in the pictures below. I used a long thin flathead screwdriver and slid it in everywhere I could on the passenger side. All the way from the front, down the passenger side and even towards the back passenger corner of the sunroof. The glue or whatever it is making that tacky sound goes away once the headliner is more secured and doesnt have any play in it. So by putting the foam in there its basically tightening the tolerances of the headliner by pushing down on it making it more secure and moving around less.

I also created "bushings" for all of the grab handles that basically steps the handle away from the headliner enough to stop the noise from happening. I used 1/4" vacuum tubing and cut pieces like 1/2" long and put them over each screw in the handle. I also didnt go nuts screwing them back in. I screwed them back in to where it was tight and the handle wasnt loose, but not as tight as it can go.

Both of these methods have fixed my headliner noise issue nearly 100%. I havent heard it since doing these two things and I recommend anyone with the issue giving these things a try.

@Kirk is this fix still holding up? If so, what thickness did you use for the neoprene?

I own a 2019 3.3T G70 Sport Advanced. Bought it certified used. i have brought it in 3 times now for the headliner rattle. 1st time we couldnt replicate it even with me in the car. Then it got noticeably worse. The service advisor at my Genesis (Hyundai) dealer siad bring it in anytime its doing it and well listen and get it fixed. Brought it in for oil change and told them about it. they said there is a bulletin out and they will put in some foam to fix it. tech drove it said its "not making noise" I drove it......NO different still making noise. (next time I will drive it with the tech in the car and the advisor in the car with me )

On top of that the tech messed up the headliner with a couple cuts and left a plastic clip off my mirror, but I'm told by the service manager they will fix this. NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL.

Will update yall as we move on in this saga
I have an update after three visits to the dealer and finally getting a cool service guy who used to be a technician to ride in the vehicle with me and point out the noises to him and with my specific instructions to have him drive the vehicle before I pick it up and make sure that noise is gone they were able to pull the headliner down and fix the issues in the upper right passenger side headliner area.

The car has been driving fine for a couple of weeks now and now I’m starting to hear a small plastic noise intermittently from the back right pillar of the vehicle so back in we go. I also hear an occasional popping noise near the headliner driver side when it is super Duper hot out

The dealer is doing everything they can to help me and I appreciate the efforts, it’s obviously a design, fit/finish problem from the manufacturer begin with.
They did give me a pretty sweet 2021 genesis G70 3.3 turbo sport as a loaner car, as they should with a certified used vehicle.
In we go. Soon I’m just gonna ask if they can replace the whole headliner and put a new one and this is getting to be ridiculous

Great fixes but we should not have to do this to a new or certified used vehicle. Perhaps you should go to the dealer and tell them how to fix it ha ha Ha, yes what thickness are you using of the foam?

My 2022 G70 3.3 has the same issue, cracking noise around upper center console and headliner, but only if outside temp is 85 plus... Does anyone know what genesis is doing for a fix?

Sorry if redundant, this being a long thread i will just ask: when do the noises in console and headliner occur? When hitting a bump, turning, even on a smooth straight road?
Just got my 2022 g70 3.3 yesterday and not looking forward to this potential issue.
thanks!

For me it's only the headliner, when hitting bumps or turning if it's about 85F or hotter. Only around the passenger's A pillar and grab handle.

Interesting, if it is indeed temp related and we’ve cracked fall here in the southeast I may not know until next year :)
I will be watching how this turns out, best of luck

Not every G70 has had this issue. My 2020 seems ok so far. In Texas plenty hot to test it. 2020 summers and now at the end of 2021 summers and no rattle or creaks. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry for the late response. The stuff I used was 1/2" thick....found here: Neoprene

The fix was 100% successful after doing it. The noise was completely eradicated after doing the neoprene and grab handle bushing fixes. After I did the foam it was 75% better, but then figuring out the grab handle was an issue too, it made it go away 100%. You just really need to get the stuff in there and try to fill as many gaps you can between the headliner and the roof. Use a long flathead and strategically slide the foam as far back into the crevices as you can.
