  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anybody have the Heads Up Display?

I was just wondering if anyone has tried putting a small dark colored square on the outer windshield where the HUD displays to counter the canceling effect of wearing polarized glasses. Like a piece of vinyl wrap maybe.

I have a 70% VLT tint on my windshield. It helps with the visibility, but its nowhere near as clear as without polarized glasses. A dark square would probably bug the hell out of most people, but it may work

I wish it showed which gear you're in, also if it had some basic shift light or something that would be sweet! Even so, I LOVE the HUD.

Aside from in my golf bag I haven't bought polarized sunglasses in years because of owning vehicles with HUD. I think when I bought a 3 series in 06 that was the first time I had to change sunglasses as the display in the instrument panel wasn't visible with polarized lenses. Magazines used to always complain about BMW's because of that. Then 2011 was my first HUD vehicle. There are still lots of really good lenses available. Oakley Prizm lenses are really good and the HUD is perfectly visible through them.
I am going to second the Oakley PRIZM lenses. I bought a pair this spring for skiing. I am a huge proponent of polarized glasses/goggles and have bought a dozen expensive pairs over the years for different uses. However, they do have some draw backs such as reducing depth perception (kind of important in sports and driving), and of course reducing LCD visibility. Oakley PRIZMs are hands down the best non-polarized lens out there and way better than using polarized lenses for baseball, golf, disc golf, and skiing. They make everything look hyper-real and detailed. You can also see the HUD. Love them!

I have 3 pair of polarized glasses. I tried all three..2 are ok and 1 is better then the other 2. Every company uses a different polarizing filter, which may be at a different angle than another company, so you will see differences.

Could be as simple as the darkness of the lenses I suppose but when you test drive TAKE THEM! I did that way I knew what I would be getting.

Incidentally...

Maui Jim are the best for me
Then the Revo
Then the Scorpion

This is my first car with a HUD, went on a road trip, and the nav info in my wind shield was fantastic, eyes didn't have to wander. Its a great feature. I would probably pay 500-1000 for it as an option.
Also first car HUD, almost didn’t get the upgraded package, but after using, it’s a great tool to utilize while driving, also find the ventilated seats much better than my past Optima, and my wife’s Sonata, noticeably better.

Can also confirm HUD is visible with Oakley Prism lenses.

Does it only show NAV next turn and distance from the native Genesis NAV or can it show that info in the HUD if using Waze or Google maps from CarPlay? I hope it can use Waze.

Only from the native navigation. Nothing from CP, AA, or Waze

Well, that sucks. I never use native navigation in any car since you have to start paying for traffic calculations early on and it's no good without that. I think it's three years for Genesis.

It's 3 years free from SiriusXM and it's always slower than Google or Waze but anyway I prefer to have it with the native Nav reflected in the HUD 90% of the time.

My brother's car has HUD and no 360 camera. Mine has the 360 camera and no HUD. We've each driven the other's car for considerable distances (like thousands of miles). I'd really miss the 360 camera if I didn't have it. The HUD is nice and I'd rather have it than not but I never felt it was even close to being a necessity.

And for me, the polarized lenses issue is substantial. I really like wearing polarized sunglasses for driving. Not only does it reduce glare from reflective surfaces, it generally enhances contrast and improves visibility. Both outside reflections and those within the car, from the windshield and dash, are greatly reduced. If a HUD were incompatible with polarized lenses, I'd continue to wear the sunglasses and just ignore the HUD. In my brother's car, there's the ability to rotate the HUD display. The images displayed don't rotate but I guess the lens they're passing through must. It enables you to optimize the image for polarization. It helps, but in my brother's car (Mazda CX-9 Signature), I still found that the display was considerably brighter and more functional if I tipped my head slightly to the side. Really annoying, actually. I found myself just ignoring it.

I think road glare can be more of a safety hazard than having to glance elsewhere for information. Research suggests that taking your eye off the road for 2 or 3 seconds isn't much of an issue. Presumably, you do it when you've already seen that the road ahead is clear and peripheral vision will alert you to a change. And most glances re probably considerably shorter than that unless you're reading information rather than just "capturing" an image. You can take in the information with a series of very brief glances rather than fixating on it for longer. It's not hard to imagine situations where it could be a problem to look away for 3 seconds, of course, but in testing the real issues start to crop up as you approach and exceed 6 seconds with eyes off the road, as when texting. I'd definitely enjoy a good HUD but, as I said, I wouldn't stop using polarized lenses to do it.

Does the Genesis system have the rotation feature? It's a good idea and would work perfectly in my brother's car if the rotation went about another 5 degrees. I also wonder if different sunglasses have slightly different polarization orientations so that trying out multiple pairs would yield one that worked. My brother has switched to nonpoalized sunglasses since getting his car wit the HUD but they don't do the same job. On a long drive, road glare is a killer and nothing eliminates it as well as polarization.
I had ceramic window tint applied to reduce the UV light getting to car, it reduces interior heat tremendously, and seldom need sunglasses at all.

I am wondering what tint to do to my future windshield, is 70% usually the go to?

It really depends on the person and their regard or lack of regard for the law. 70% VLT doesn't really have much of a noticeable tint to it, but I have seen others who have a far darker tint to their windshield. Your trade-off will be visibility at night. Theoretically windshield tint can also distort your vision due to the angles of windshields, but I haven't noticed any issues.

unless you live in the desert, I wouldnt go below 70. 70 or 80, either would work well for most people
