Apple Care Play was featured with live demo at this weeks Chicago Auto Show in the Sonota. Ok but we have 2015 Genesis' so how does this help ?



Here is the scoop...

Working Apple Car Play is finally coming April - May 2015 first to Sonota.

Those of us with 2015 Genesis will need to contact dealer and request the software upgrade to our Genesis - the hardware is always in car, but will require software upgrade. Told will be free... but owners need to contact dealer.

Stay tuned.. I have to say the live demo was fantastic - picked up everything I said via Siri.. from trivia - ages of actors, location of local coffee shops, to sending text to my contacts. I talk really fast ... but Siri had no problem. Awesome feature - you will want this - Genesis owners lets all keep on top of our dealers and Hyundai corporate so we can make sure this happens.

You can do everything you just stated above today in your Genesis through Siri Eyes Free - you just don't get the pretty on-screen icons. Just hold down the voice button for 2 seconds to bring it up and speak your commands...

I agree. Before I bought my car Apple Car Play was a big deal, but not that i have played with the system, i don't see what Car Play functionally adds.

CarPlay is using your phone... so, yes - if the app being used needs a data connection to work, then it's using your data plan just like it would if you ran it directly on your phone.

Doesn't seem very practical for people that have fairly small data plans.

I agree. Before I bought my car Apple Car Play was a big deal, but not that i have played with the system, i don't see what Car Play functionally adds.

Carplay (and Android Auto) will add some functionality - like visible notifications of Texts messages and calls (via tags on the app icons on the CarPlay screen like it shows on your iPhone) and alternate options for navigation (using data, though).

Siri Eyes Free works pretty well, so I'm not too bothered about when or even if we get CarPlay/Android Auto - would be nice but I'm satisfied with what I have at present (well except for the NAV liking to lose lock and showing me driving "off road" quite often!)

True - I can see some folks getting an unpleasant surprise with their mobile charges after their first month of using CarPlay if they don't realize it's using data!

It also seems like it would be another distraction for the driver.

Not related to hyundai but interesting:

While Toyota has long been listed as one of Apple's CarPlay partners, the third best-selling auto brand in the U.S. currently has no plans to offer vehicles with the feature in that country, as noted in a New York Times overview of the race between Google and Apple to own the dashboard. Toyota also has no plans to offer Android Auto support in the U.S.
John Hanson, the national manager of Toyota’s advanced technology communications, said while the company talked frequently with both Google and Apple, it currently had no plans to adopt Android Auto or CarPlay in the United States.

“We may all eventually wind up there, but right now we prefer to use our in-house proprietary platforms for those kinds of functions,” Mr. Hanson said.
While Toyota is ruling out the U.S. market for CarPlay support for the time being, the company has not made any firm announcement about support in other countries. Shortly after Apple's CarPlay announcement, Toyota's UK division briefly posted a blog entry claiming CarPlay would be coming in 2015, but the company quickly backtracked on the claim.

Today's report from The New York Times focuses more on Android Auto than on CarPlay, likely due in large part to Apple refusal to comment for the piece. Still, it offers a glimpse of the struggles auto manufacturers have had developing in-car systems and their reluctance to turn that experience over to Apple and Google.

With consumer preference driving the market, however, many manufacturers now see little choice but to support both CarPlay and Android Auto. Vehicles supporting both systems are expected to be hitting showrooms in the near future, with Hyundai likely one of the first out of the gate.

I think one of the challenges with integrating with the Genesis is that there are two completely different entertainment systems to integrate with: the Android-based AVN 4.5 that is standard and the Linux based DIS 2.0 system in the Ultimate. If Hyundai intends for CarPlay to work with both entertainment systems (and I'd be surprised if they didn't), then CarPlay won't go live until it's implemented and tested with both of these (potentially) completely different OSes. (Disclaimer for other mobile developers who might be reading this and call "foul": I say potentially because there are a whole lot of specifics and development variations that might affect how similar or different the two implementations could be. For example is AVN 4.5 built on NDK or JDK, or both, etc).

On top of the completely different platforms, there are also the choices to made as to which applications to support (Pandora vs Spotify or other), and the specifics about what level of driver interaction would be practical. This is why I am of the "I'll believe in it when it's actually available" mindset. I believe it's coming, but thinking about it from the developer's perspective, it's a whole lot of work to make that happen, and car companies are thankfully extremely conservative with testing. Rinse/repeat all that for Android Auto.

You are correct we have Siri ( I didn't know it was called Eyes Free) so thanks for that info.
While Siri Eyes Free works... it works I assure you it is NOT the same responsiveness and ease of use as what I experienced as I did the demo with Apple Car Play in the 2015 Sonota at the Chicago Auto Show.
Besides the on screen icons, texting and commands are much more responsive. You'll see....It is a great upgrade, I wouldn't pass it up if I were you.

Apple announced at their conference today that CarPlay is going wireless - just step in the car and the car will recognize your phone. Possibly for new vehicles only. Hope the Genesis will get this as well!

I got got an email from Hyundai on free Car Play. See partial E-mail screen shot which says my 2015 Genny 3.6 is eligable. Has anyone downloaded it and install it and if so what are the pros and cons? Did it mess up anything on the OEM stuff associated with your display screen?
