  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I understand that this system uses both onboard forward looking cameras and the Smart Cruise Control System to determine if & when the automatic emergency braking system will be activated. Also, the driver must first put a "checkmark" beside the automatic emergency braking system in the driver assist settings. What I'm unclear about is whether this system will only operate if one or both of the following conditions are also met: 1) The smart cruise control system is currently turned on (i.e. driver has depressed the "Cruise" button on the steering wheel; and 2) driver has not temporarily canceled cruise control by either depressing the brake or the "Cancel" button on the steering wheel. OR is it the case that the automatic emergency braking system will activate EVEN IF the smart cruise control is not turned on and actively in operation at the time that an emergency stop is required? I haven't been able to find an answer to this question in the Owner's Manual for the 2015 Genesis. (I don't want to test it to find out the answer the hard way!) Does anyone know the answer with certainty (as opposed to an educated guess)?

It does not require the CC be turned on. It saved me in slow work traffic when I was too slow to react and on my first drive in the car when a stake truck ahead of me locked up his transmission on an on-ramp with CC turned off.

But I think AEB is deactivated if your foot is on the brake?

AEB works fine without any cruise control settings being activated - That is a certainty as far as my car is concerned.

AEB would be essentially worthless if it did require CC - since one normally doesn't set CC for "town" driving (CC min speed = 20 mph). And, making AEB dependent on cruise control would not be logical or safe since the manufacturer would be taking a major safety feature - AEB - and making it dependent on a purely convenience item - CC.

My AEB has functioned on a couple of occasions - and it works - although it's a little unnerving.

That is not the case. If you are not braking hard enough it will kick in and auto brake for you to avoid a collision

Thanks to those of you who replied to my inquiry about the AEB system. I think I was somewhat confused by Hyundai's explanation (as I understood it) that AEB utilizes the smart cruise control radar device to assess closing speed/stopping distance. Good to know that CC needn't be turned on at the time. Have yet to experience the AEB system in action.

1. Make sure it's actually enabled.

2. You'll know alright when it goes into operation. In my case, a car cut in front of me from a side road very quickly - that was unnerving - then my car beeps loudly and hits the brakes quickly. That really got me.

I had totally forgotten that I even had AEB enabled (right after I bought the car), then - bingo - all this action takes place.

Come up to N. Va - you'll can get a little tryout - the me-first drivers around here are something else.
