  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I just noticed this yesterday but if I'm on the highway doing day 75 and my rear windows are open I have an absolutely unbearable vibration that is actually painful to hear.
Does or did anyone have this issue?

Modern cars are not designed (from a airflow perspective) to run at high speeds with windows open. The turbulence will reduce gas mileage by a measureable amount.

Virtually all vehicles I've owned in the last twenty years have done this under certain speed/window open conditions, but each one is different. My guess is that when you create that unique condition for the particular vehicle, interior air pressure builds up faster than it can dissipate it so you get a repeated sudden depressurizing happening very quickly which causes the awful drumming sound. Maybe not a totally accurate description of the phenomenon, but good enough for me. :)

Pretty much a standard "feature" these days. adjusting the window height will help. The car is built so tight that the air compresses/decompresses. That is the vibration you hear. I'll bet if you open the trunk passthrough and then pop the trunk lid, the vibration goes away.

Were all of your windows down, or just the front? Was the moonroof fully or partially open, or was it closed? The answers to these questions will help. With all windows down and moonroof fully open, I have driven 5 mph to triple digits without anything crazy except more wind noise the faster I went.

open your trunk and then open the little pass thru to the trunk. this will allow the wind flow to escape the car therefore reducing the vibration of the air built up in the car. with this you also reduce drag coefficient on the car which may introduce many other issues.

Open the rear windows a 1/4th to a 1/3rd of the way open, no more.

I had all window's closed except the two rear ones. And no this isn't a feature of these new cars.
I've never owned a single car that makes this noise. Especially a noise this horrific

Not all cars have the same exact aerodynamic properties, but very few of them will perform best in a wind tunnel when the windows are open. If it makes such a loud and horrific noise, either get rid of the car or don't open the windows at 75 MPH.

I only open the windows just to quiet down my 1yr old daughter who hates being in a car seat. But ya it's sad my 05 wrx, 1995 Lexus gs300 and my wife's 2000 Saturn doesn't have this issue.
So does anyone else have this issue

You are driving at 75 MPH with your 1 year old daughter in the back seat?

fwiw, i have observed this in 11 genny, 94 camry, 11 Sierra, 06 taurus ... and also several rentals over the past year or so (but don't remember rental specific models). this isn't unique to the genesis ... but it is annoying.

And maybe I've been fortunate then to never notice or have this issue.

Every model is a little different in terms of wind turbulence and resonances, etc. But manufacturers usually don't worry much about the effect when windows are open, because most people don't drive at such high speeds that way (for one thing, it hurts gas mileage even if A/C is on when windows are closed, and A/C is off when windows are open). Only exception would be a convertible, where it is expected that people will be driving with top down, etc, at fairly high speeds.

Patient: "Doctor, it hoits when I do dis!"

Doctor: "Don't do dat!"

And all I was trying to do is figure out if my car is defective or not

How could it be defective? The characteristics of the car in the wind are a product of the shape of the car.
