  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I have had my 2015 genny since August.

So far, I have taken her to the shop 3 times.

Bad brakes, bad alignment from factory, power locks didn't work, and the backup camera stops working intermittently.

In the middle of backing up, my camera cut out. Subsequently, I hit a low retaining wall that I couldn't see out of my window and mirrors.

I talked to the dealer, and they said they have had tons of problems with the cameras {same one on sonata} and so they replaced it,

I contacted the Genesis connect center about the bumper damage to see if they can do anything. They referred me back to the dealer. The dealer submitted for it, and he said his rep said they can't do a thing. So back to Genesis connect, they said they couldn't do anything either. They said there is a disclaimer that advises the driver to "be careful of surroundings" they are not responsible.

Is it just me, or does it not seem right that they won't stand behind the product failure. The camera was obviously bad, a known issue. It failed, and as a result I got damage to my car, don't get me wrong, I drove cars for a lot of years without cameras, but I have grown to depend on them, every vehicle I have had in the last 7 years have had them. They are so important the federal government requires them. So why can't they honor a $1400 repair? Am I being unreasonable about this?

I asked. My Cadillac service manager about it when I was getting the included oil change with free loaner....he said Cadillac would cover it no questions asked. Pretty sad that Hyundai didn't offer me even a discounted repair or a break on parts.

Any thoughts on this? Ideas on something to help me?

While very sorry you had damage to your car, the lack of a working backup camera is not an excuse or liability on Hyundai. It is a driving aid, but does not replace using mirrors and good judgement. I'm not convinced these devices which can help safe driving can also be used as an excuse when they don't work, forcing the driver to drive as has been done for the 100 years or so prior. If the cruise control stopped working, you can't get out of a speeding ticket because there was no working cruise control.

I would have to agree with ksoze. Sounds like you are saying you cannot back up without hitting something if you do not have a camera? The damage to your car was not from the camera failure but your incompetence. Sorry if it sounds harsh but could not find a better word.

Don't worry, I am not offended.

This is the first time in 25 years of driving that I have backed into anything. I haven't had any kind of an accident in many years.

The issue is.. when backing into a tight spot, relying on the camera...it stopped working. Instantly my attention was focused on that, and BAM. It was that quick.

Would Hyundai be liable if my breaks stopped working? The speedo?

I know I actually backed into the wall, however Hyundai provides a driver aid to help make sure that doesn't happen, and it failed. So did I.

They know it is a problem and verified it. My concern is that they never even offered to help. I would have even been happy if the dealer offered parts at his cost rather then MSRP.

I feel it is kind of a dirt bag move. Especially since my second Genesis has been in the shop more than my last 10 cars combined!

agree 100%

I backed into the wall.
I failed.

The backup camera does not ensure it won't happen.

Seems pretty clear to me who owns this.

Alright, so if it is 100% my fault, anyone know a good spot to get prices on a bumper?

Apple and oranges. If the brakes proved to be a defect that they knew about, then likely some liability. There is an expectation that brakes work and they are the only way to stop the car. A speedo not working, not a chance. The difference is safety versus convenience and a camera is an aid to parking and brakes are essential to stopping.

As far as the wound on the bumper, does it need to be replaced? Check for a good body shop in your area or ask the dealer who they use.

Since Hyundai had some amount of culpability in this, you would think they could supply parts at cost, or something like that.

Did the parking assist (the beeps) stop working when the camera went out?
