  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Battery dead, How to charge the battery?

Does anyone know if Costco carries the H8-AGM (V6 Engine) or H9-AGM (V8 Engine) batteries? I know they use Interstate Battery.
I didn't see any at the Costco where I live on two different times I checked, but that could vary by location.

Interstate Batteries is owned by Johnson Controls, who also supplies batteries for many other brands. There are only about 3 major auto battery manufacturers in North America, and Johnson Controls is the largest.

AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts sell H8-AGM batteries that appear to be the same, except for cosmetic differences in the plastic pieces on top, and the colors of the plastic. Both of them usually offer good online discounts (including buy online and pickup in store). Some Walmart's also offer the H8-AGM, but most apparently do not stock them,

I don't know anything about the H9 batteries,

Story Update

Dealer said battery just died for no reason. They gave me a new battery because of the Platinum Plus warranty. Usually basic warranty doesn't cover it since it has been over 2 years already. It didn't make sense to me, how a battery just dies (without it showing sign of weakness)

Later I found out all I had to do press the brake and then use the button to release the parking brake. I didn't realize I needed to push the brake.

Sudden battery failure is common, although not as much in colder climates. What happens is the plastic interior structure of the individual battery cells breaks or is compromised due to a sudden shock or continuous vibration. It happens more when the battery is warm or hot. This is a major cause of battery failure in the southern US.

I checked with a meter. The battery is at 3 V. Not sure what happened. I parked the car as usual in the garage. Only thing I can think of is that I bought a new Anker USB charger for my phone and it was connected. I drove the car yesterday and it was fine.

I am using a NOCO 3500 smart charger. It has been 1.5 hour I have been charging. It is still st 25%. I do have the platinum plus warranty and I can toe the car for free to dealer. I am hoping to drive it there. Moving it will be little hard from the garage.

Hopefully it will charge. Still not sure what caused it. May be the trunk wasn't closed properly and some people on this forum said that could be an issue. The trunk light was on. But I doubt that.

I had the exact same problem with my 2015 5.0. I drive it every day. Parked in the garage one night and the next morning dead battery. Battery had only 3.5 volts. Called Blue Link and they sent out a tow truck. We had to over ride the shifter to get it out of Park and roll the car out of the garage and up on truck. Dealer checked it and said defective battery, replaced under warranty. Good luck.

Does the battery have to be "encoded" like BMW? After searching, AGM's are becoming hard to find. Hyundai discontinued the battery (37110-B1100).

No - none of that BMW crap.

Most people seem to be buying the agm's at Autozone

When I bought a replacement battery at Advance Auto Parts, they looked at my current battery setup cables and refused to install it for free. They said that they have had trouble with replacing BMW batteries, and the cables attached to the Genesis battery look "similar." However, the Genesis battery install is easy, and does not have to be encoded. There is a video of how to replace it (with some comments made in the forums about things the video may have not explained completely or not correctly).

So any AGM H8 battery from Advance Auto, AutoZone, Walmart, etc will work fine. Advance Auto frequently has a lot of online discounts, where you purchase online and pickup at the store. Maybe the same for AutoZone.

Oh yes. I would imagine the temp under the hood of a typical air-conditioned southern US motor vehicle in rush hour traffic gets to 170+ F. Which is why an AGM battery is best put in the trunk. It cannot tolerate prolonged high heat or variations in hot and cold nearly as well as a standard flooded cell battery. Which begs a question. How fast or slow does the temperature of the trunk change? Do people experience high battery failure rates when they repeatedly park the car outside in the sun? Are high failure rates associated with temperature variations a car on a driveway or street would repeatedly experience in say, Amarillo, Texas?

I have been very happy with Braille. I have a group 49 in the volvo and will replace the hyundai with one when the time comes...it may not, we'll see... I have been led to believe that braille is actually made by interstate, I cannot comment on the veracity of that however. Separately I have also heard interstate makes the autozone (gold? platinum? it's their top end agm) agm. Maybe someone else can speak accurately to the truth or falsehood of that conjecture. Anyhoo, not my first braille, happy w the brand, would blog about again!

From what I have read, there are only 3-4 car battery manufacturers in North America (starting batteries, not those for electric cars). Johnson Controls is the largest and also has battery manufacturing operations worldwide. Johnson Controls owns the Interstate Brand, but they also supply many other brands.

Some brands (like Diehard) typically uses multiple suppliers for their car starting batteries, depending the type (AGM, flooded cell, etc) and depending on the size.

A similar situation is true for things like oil filters. For economy of scale reasons, there is no one brand that makes all the filters sold under their brand name.

I'm not seeing an H9 battery on their site.

I thought it was an H8? Anyway, you should be able to describe your vehicle and they know what size fits.

No, it's actually an H9a/95R. CCA on the H8 is 850. H9 is 950. Plus, the dimensions on the battery are different. BatteriesPlus (Duracell) has them in-stock for a premium price, but they do look just like the battery in the Genesis (think it is a JCI). I refuse to buy a replacement battery from the dealer on principle. $320 is a joke.

Advance Auto Parts sells them:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/c3/car-batteries/15597

Price at stores where I live is $190.99 (plus refundable core charge). If you order online (for pickup in store), you can get 20% off thru July 2nd. Not all stores have them in stock, but they can get it fairly quick. Their website will tell you if any nearby stores have them in stock.

I didn't check AutoZone, but they may have a similar deal.

H8 is for the V6 engine. H9 is for the V8.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The Advance part # for the V8 is H9-AGM ($191).

Out of stock everywhere I've looked. Home delivery? "Only qty of 0 is available for this item(BTRY-PLATM AGM ATOCF, Part No: H9-AGM) " is what the site says.

Only a few stores have them near where I live in the southeast. I noticed that a couple of stores in Austin have them. Maybe you can call a local store and have them order it, since it is probably not a big seller and they may not stock them. Probably too heavy to ship to home.

your post is well meaning - but so full of misinformation and worthless safety advice, it is laughable.

"See if I can help?" Ok.

So, for example, hydrogen gas is "explosive". Forget it - no problem. That advice goes back to the fifties when batteries were vented and very gassy.

Fooling around with the cables ?? A bit silly.

Just charge the dam thing with a smart charger and be happy.

And use the front connectors (under the hood).

And the manual? Written by lawyers.

Forget that too.
=====================================================
Hydrogen gas is explosive at over 3%. The US alone has had at least two military submarines sink because of hydrogen fires and explosion. Early Genesis models with flooded plate technology are equipped with a sort of vinyl venting hose to direct the hydrogen gas produced during charging to the bottom side of the vehicle. (Gee, I wonder why they put it there ? )
