  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Battery discharge warning

Yep, you have two options...keep engine running, or plug in a pair of headphones and listen on your phone.

I disagree with this, will confirm tonight.

Uhhh. how can you disagree? What's option 3?

Was there in the original firmware. Even my last car, Alfa Giulia, let you turn it off.

Let me dig out the manual...

At least the car is smart enough to see a parasitic draw in the system, what if it's something else that you don't see and then you car won't start because of it, at least with the warning you know you have a draw and can deal with it before being stranded. Keep the engine running then.

These modern cars are not like those of the past that some of us recall. In older cars once the key was removed there was no draw on the battery by any device. Now with security systems armed, keyless receivers and other always on systems there is a risk of drain during ignition off periods. My last vehicle had an electronic flaw where the satellite radio was always searching for a signal even when car was off, no accessory or start, completely off, leading to a dead battery if the car sat for a few days. An electronic update cured the problem, AFTER I was left with a dead battery. Just one example.

Option 3 - Use the accessory mode. (engine off, foot off of the brake, hit the "start" button and see "Accessory" on the dash screen. You can listen to music this way with the engine off. The discharge warning shows up and goes away on its own, who cares. Enjoy listening to your music from the car sound system, with the engine off. Volume pending you should be good for an hour easy this way.

So this morning, I arrived at my parking location, and killed the engine. Then hit the ignition button again to turn on accessory mode. Got the battery warning, but the stereo did not turn off. So, I consider that a win.

The extra step of turning the accessory setting on is a little silly but I guess it could be worse.

Because it doesn't shut itself off it forces you to turn to that mode (Accessory) intentionally. That way if you drain you battery it's on you, and they don't have people flipping out about dead batteries because their dog hit the radio power button or they left the radio on when getting out of the car, etc. Been this way since a radio was put in a car I'd imagine.

it's interesting to me that a few "good" features of vehicles have gone away over the past few years.

RAP - Retained auto power, introduced my GM in the 1990s, after turning off the key the radio would remain active for 10-20 minutes depending on the model and the settings of the owner, and you could also close the windows during that time Even my 2012 Camaro had this feature.. M

My 2015 Lexus didn't have this at all press the button to turn off the car and all power was killed, and the Genesis "kinda" has this, but the radio will only remain active for 2 minutes, and the windows don't work at all, for me this makes no sense, the power should be retained so if one turns off the car but doesn't immediately exit (on the phone or whatever), they can still roll up the windows before they exit.

The other feature I have had on every car until my 2015 Lexus was turn signal alert. if your turn signal was on for more than 1 mile without the steering wheel being turned it would alert you with chimes. Seems that since most manufactures have gone to the 3-5-7 lane change feature, they removed the alert feature. But most people don't use the partial tick for the 3-5-7 flash, they lock the stick and then drive for miles with the signal on.

Like this morning, f-tard in a Tesla left signal on for the full 10 miles I was behind him and he changed lanes left and right a dozen times.

I guess the RAP feature is not present on the G80 but I believe it is there on the G90. After you turn off the engine the radio continues to work and the windows will still go up and down. Opening the drivers door cancels this feature. Not sure how long the feature stays active, probably a couple of minutes

as for the turn signal, I would often leave my signal on in my last Lexus. With the new Genesis have I learned to use the 3-5-7 flash. It’s great and works well with the blind spot alert. With that feature, leaving the signal on accidentally will trigger the blind spot alert sound so again another reason to use the 3-5-7 flash.

the G70 will also play the radio and let you move the windows for a bit after powering down

I agree about the Genesis signals. I hated the turn signal stalk in the Lexus, it was the "soft touch" like BMW, so it didn't lock down, it returned to center, so if you pressed too much it stayed on and when you flipped it up or down to cancel 9 out of 10 times you would activate the other directions lane change 3-5-7 flash. . I see this behavior on newer Lexus and BMWs every day.

for me the lack of the alert isn't an issue, I know how to use the lane change feature, but the vast majority don't so you see them driving with their signals on for miles.

same as auto headlights. 95% of vehicles today and since 2015 have auto headlights, but I see people every day usually a half dozen or more driving in pitch Black of the night with no headlights on, too stupid to realize that their dash lights up regardless of whether or not the headlights are on.

On a funny note I actually said something to a lady in a brand new Accord EX-L a few nights ago, which I know has auto headlights. I asked her how a vehicle that costs over $30K didn't come with headlights or turn signals, she looked confused and said it has both, so my reply was, oh, so you are just too stupid to use either... she flipped me off. and never did turn on her headlights.

G80 plays the radio for about 2 minutes, the windows will only work for about 15 seconds after power off, they don't work at all in ACC mode.

The real crime here is you are riding the bus to work and not driving the car.

I agree somewhat, but it’s like 30 miles each way. And I can nap or read this way.

only 30 miles? you must be in NYC or San Fran area. most places 30 miles in a car is 30 minutes, 30 miles on a bus is 2.5 hours.

In most big city areas 30 miles would take longer than 30 minutes in work traffic. Point in case, it takes me about 40 min to go 25 miles (fwiw, away from LA) and I leave home before 6am.

Oh I get it, I live near Long Beach and work in East L.A. takes me 45-60 minutes to go 14 miles between 7am and 9am.. after 9am it takes me 20 minutes..
At night it is worse. it's 60-90 minutes until 8:30-9:00.

But the bus ride is much worse. 3-4 hours. same distance. the Train isn't any better, 60-90 minutes plus a 3 mile walk from the station to the office.

Ha my comment on the bus was more around we wish we all could drive car more !
