  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Beware dark chrome issues

GMA will definitely replace, but it will just happen again. Sad but true experience for most of us.
Some here have had to fight with dealers to replace trim under warranty. Some have had no issues so seems to really depend how good a dealer you have for this.

I've heard that as well. I think in general if it gets to GMA, they will replace without issue. Just keeping moving up the ladder if anyone gets local resistance. But the issues will come back after it's been replaced. Frustrating....but the truth.

What do you guys think are the reasons for the problem? I know it shouldn't happen, but curious what causes it. Excess heat? Cleaning products? Parked outside? A combination of those? To try to avoid them if possible, now that the car is new. It's almost always garaged, and I only clean those areas with a microfiber raga sprayed with distilled water (no cleaners of any kind). Hope that eliminates the issue for me, but we'll see. Thank you.

It's hard to say. I never touched my car with anything other than microfiber. I had my car ceramic coated as well. It's only a thin film that's placed over the chrome. It just breaks down over time. Maybe the heat speeds that process up.

I think its water spots that etch into the coating on our trim. I’ve kept my issue to a minimum by keeping it in the garage and since it’s not my only car, if it’s gonna rain I use my other car half the time. I keep a good wax on the trim pieces but all my window trim is still affected to a degree with spotting and discoloration. Don’t really want my car disassembled for window trim so have held off screwing with a dealer for the moment.

I think it's that and other things too. Mine was more like a webbing look. Not water sports. It looked horrible on a 2 month old car. I will say, my local dealer mauled my 22 G70 LE matte paint. To the point they got me another car.

Yeah, most of those issues start with dealers, who use ultra hard water to wash the stupid cars. I told them not to wash mine, but guess the salesman didn't pass the message, since it had some 'etching' on that trim, plus horrible hard water stains everywhere. I'll try to remove it with mild polish, and see what happens... but that's as far as I'll get. It's' not bad enough to risk more damage from removing and replacing that trim.

Wow! I didn't realize that happened to you. Did you have the white or gray? I taped everything off and polished the "dark chrome" film off of the chrome trim. Didn't damage the paint at all but I was definitely careful. Dealers are pathetic. I don't trust them with my vehicles.

Yea....it was an awful experience. They made it worse by trying to cover up the scratches and buffed the matte paint. Thinking I wouldn't know. All that did was make a bunch of shiny circular spots all around the door trim. I had the Melbourne Gray.

And for that reason I will NEVER own another car with matte paint. Matte wrap, yes. Paint, no.

That's understandable. I've always said that if I ever have paint issues with mine I'll have it wrapped.

I'm looking at replacing my set for the third time now. The Genesis dealer in Honolulu is telling me that it will more than likely not be covered because it's been replaced twice already. I was also informed that "a TSB was released saying that this is a known problem on 2019-2020 G70s and to not cover them under warranty any more as it's a manufacturing defect." My response to that was "well, if it's a manufacturing defect and a known problem, I would think that Genesis WOULD cover replacement." Apparently Genesis getting it so much that, they're just throwing their arms up and denying warranty claims. Doesn't make sense. I was also told that it's since been fixed with the newer G70s...

My dealer is waiting on a response from their district manager on whether or not to cover it since it's been replaced twice already. If not, I'm vinyl wrapping them and selling the car...it's had other issues that I'm just over. Fun while it lasted but it's grown to be a major headache.

Don't believe them. It has not been fixed. My 2022 had it.

I am waiting for mine to be replaced. Been waiting a while for the pieces. It’s just the rear section that needs replacing. At first, they were going to replace all trim which didn’t make sense. Now they are just replacing the section on rear doors. They told me it would be covered under 5 year/60k warranty if it happens again.

I had all of the chrome warranty-replaced for this issue once, about eight months after the car was new. The pieces have gone bad again. I am working on getting a warranty replacement but at least one of the pieces has been on backorder for nearly a year. Once they are installed, frankly I'm debating wrapping them or putting 3M protective plastic on them in the hope of prolonging their life. It boggles my mind that a purported luxury vehicle manufacturer cannot get this right.

I had my car in for service and was expecting them to do the polishing procedure on them. Thanks to this forum I knew it wouldn't work but I assumed this was just one of the steps I have to go through to get the trim replaced.

Dealer just called to tell me they won't be polishing. Genesis instructed them to discontinue the practice as it's not effective. Now I wait to hear whether or not Genesis is going to replace the trim.

They should definitely replace them. However, it will happen again.

I'll give an update on mine. After replacing several months ago, they could never get the alignment right with the vertical trim near the rear triangle window. I've had it replaced again (at a diff dealer) but it still isn't aligned correctly and creates wind noise while driving. Waiting to hear back from svc advisor on next steps.

I fear them messing up the replacement so I went the route of masking off my trim and using Flitz Metal Polish to remove the oxidation and get down to the chrome. To be honest the dark film that is put over the chrome is not that dark. There was a section of one of the pieces which had not yet oxidized but the part next to it was. You could see the difference, but if you were just walking by you may not notice - I mean WE ALL WOULD notice. I am just waiting for the non oxidized parts to do the same so it just all chrome.

Just bought a used 2021 G70 Sport Prestige with this dark chrome issue... I couldn't figure out why the dealer did such a terrible job detailing it and then found this.

I have an appointment next week to have the dealer look at it, didn't buy at a Genesis dealer. I feel like there's dark chrome all over this car - like the grille, are folks completely wrapping all of that? it would look good in balck, but dang this dark chrome would look amazing if it didn't look terrible lol.

I only noticed issues around the door and windshield/rear
