Beware dark chrome issues

Resurrecting this thread to talk about my search to protect the dark chrome on the G70. UV light damage is really bad here, and with the trim water spots and such I am looking to protect the trim ASAP. From some research, I heard a lot of chrome trim is actually a thin layer of real metal. Can anyone verify if that's true for the G70/G80? If so, I heard you actually need to polish it like a metal to clean it, so maybe that would remove the water spots? And I heard that wax is okay for metal trim, and my detailer is going to use wax on the trim as well.

If anyone can verify or rebuke this info, that'd be great. Hope this helps anyone.

Do not polish it. Theres a film on it that will get destroyed by polish.

Agree, do not polish. It is not metal anywhere. Clean it and maybe was gently like paint anywhere else on the car.

Also I while back I posted a Pic of the chrome trim peeling. Genesis replaced all the bad trim pieces on my car, no complaints.

There have been several here who have had those pieces replaced. For those affected, how has the new parts been holding up? Unless Genesis made improvements or changed suppliers, would think new pieces would exhibit the same issues over time?

No polishing but waxing is ok and will protect them.

@pulsar The replacement trim is holding up fine. The original trim would literally just peel off on it's own. I never saw any "piece" fall off or anything, and I baby my car however over time (assuming touchless carwashes, etc.) there would be more and more of the dark chrome trim missing.

The new stuff is great, I don't even think of this issue anymore.

Thanks and good to know. Replacement parts are either better, or between Korea and the port something was applied to the vehicle that contaminated the trim pieces somehow?

I worded my answer wierd before. The chrome finish over the regular chrome trim was not adhering and flaking off. Definitely a manufacturing issues, nothing to do with transportation, my scenario.

I just bought my 3.3T Sport Siberian Ice G70 on Friday (yay) with around 8K on the odo so I'm the second owner. I have it REAL bad on all the dark chrome pieces around all four doors. Have an appointment with the dealer on the other side of Phoenix in Scottsdale because the dealer near my house that I bought the car from won't return my calls and has gone comm out with me.

Glad but not also not glad to see that I'm not the only one with this problem....

Mine has the left rear door dark chrome trim around to window looks like it has fine scratches in it but the other three are fine. Dealer in Gilbert ordered it and been waiting about a week for the part to come in.

This has been resolved. No G70’s affected.

Mine has the left rear door dark chrome trim around to window looks like it has fine scratches in it but the other three are fine. Dealer in Gilbert ordered it and been waiting about a week for the part to come in.

Had mine for 2 months and noticed it. Luckily it's a defective part covered by the dealer. Hopefully get it this coming week.

I’ve got a ‘19 G70 that’s showing fine “spider web” lines in all of the black chrome trim around the door windows. Lower trim seems to have it worse but upper shows the same issue.

Showed it to the dealer I use for service and they found a TSB that has them try to buff the trim. It didn’t fix the issue so they’re reaching out to Genesis for approval to replace the trim pieces. This all happened right after Christmas so I don’t expect to hear back this coming week or next.

Strange that it looks like it’s only the window trim pieces that are affected. None of the other black chrome trim appears to have the same issue.

Is this damage caused by 'wear and tear' of the car, or moreso UV exposure from the sun? (will help me make my case in saying that my car should be the one in the car port, not my girlfriends Toyota Yaris )

This issue I don’t believe is uv related. That being said anytime you can limit sun exposure you are better off. Here in Phoenix its critical.

Phoenix is BRUTAL. At my old start-up, we were scouting satellite offices in Phoenix and we had a rental car with leather seats. Swear my seats almost killed me alive.
