  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Beware dark chrome issues

It looks like the problem is starting to appear on the black chrome on my mirrors and the side vents. Granted, it seems like extremely minor spotting but I'll be keeping an eye on it...

So with some final inspection or similar after wash detail spray those dark chrome spots do not wipe off? I’ve seen them on mine but spray a detail shine/final inspection on a micro cloth and mine seem to clean off just fine so far with just a little elbow grease.

Ceramic coating would be the surefire semi-permanent fix and protection for these weak chrome finishes. Manufacturing shortcoming, YES. But if you want to do something about for the life of the car, ceramic coating guys.

If the chrome flaking is an adhesion issue (which I think it is). Wouldn't it still come off, just taking the ceramic topcoating with it? Maybe would help slightly...

I've had the bottom window trim pieces replaced under warranty, likely going to have to do the top sooner than later as they are peeling.

A good thick layer of ceramic coat if done right, No the chrome cannot peel off along with the ceramic coat. It should seal off every bit of the surface area and leave no chance for underlying chrome to peel. It's like saying the chrome could still peel off if PPF was applied to it. Anyways, a good ceramic coat will protect the chrome from any sort of wear, fade, discoloration.

My 2020 sport is peeling
I bought my 2020 with defective dark chrome.... waiting on the part of the trim for the drivers door, it’s completely eaten away.

I bought my 2019 3.3T Dynamic a couple of months ago. Got a great deal on a "used" car with only 86 miles on it - $15k discount! A couple of days after getting it home, I pulled it out of the garage to do the first detail and noticed that all of the trim around the windows had this sticky coating. First thought was they had left the shipping protection film on the trim as the car sat for months in the hot south Texas sun. After close inspection, it looked like the dark coating had broken down into this sticky mess. I suspect that this may have been the reason for the deep discount. I used some Goop Gone and a microfiber cloth to remove the mess. All of the trim is now chrome. Given the discussion here, I may contact the dealer to see if the trim can be replaced. Although if everyone is having issues with the replacement, I may opt to leave them as is. I also have spots on the front grill and the "boomerangs". The dark tint was a nice idea, but it looks like the implementation needs a bit more thought!

Do not just let it go! Make Genesis replace it, numerous times if needed. It's the only way we'll get a long term fix for this issue.

See my issue below.

I purchased my car "sight unseen" from a dealership about 4 hours away, to include a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro that I was trading in. All the paperwork was completed online, minus signing the financial contract. Keep in mind, I purchased at the beginning of all the Covid issues.

When I showed up at the dealership to exchange vehicles, I immediately noticed the dark chrome around the driver and passenger doors was all jacked up. I had no previous knowledge of this issue. Needless to say, I was sick to my stomach! I decided to take a few deep breaths, drive the car(which I'd never done), then do a little research via Google. It's what brought me to this forum. I returned to the dealership, showed them what I found online, and asked them to note the issue with the dark chrome on my buyers order. I wanted to cover my butt because it would be my local dealership I'd have to deal with concerning replacement. My local dealer was fantastic, gave me no issue getting the trim replaced, and it looks as good as new. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Get it taken care of. That's what bumper to bumper warranties are for. This is a known manufacturing issue with the dark chrome and your service advisor should know about it. The dealer I bought my car from wanted to just detail it and buff the stuff out. Took it to another dealer across town in Scottsdale and my service advisor recognized it immediately as a manufacturing issue. Replaced, no questions asked.

Same thing my dealer tried..."cleaning it up." All that did was make it "chrome," lol!

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
It has started on my 2019 Sport too. Both sides at the rear back seat windows. I'm not sure what my plans are yet. If the problem returns after replaced I don't want to have to keep taking it back in. I briefly entertained wrapping it myself in satin or gloss black but have since decided to leave it as is for now. It may just go back to Genesis like this at lease end.

Mine was like that too. Fortunately their detailer was able to remove and buffed it out most of it.

Hey all, did not see anyone mention a 2020 yet.. Just bought a brand new 42miles 2020 G70 sport with this trim issue two weeks ago. Dealer mentioned the rubbing compound though from what I can see that isnt going to fix the problem. At the same time the chrome tinting on the front bumper is peeling. That's totally different from the window trim which is more of an etching/oxidizing look. The bumper tint is literally peeling off in multiple places.. Crazy.. sent back to dealer today. Will see what happens..

I finally got mine to order replacements. Maybe those will last longer...

Chrome on the front bumper? Not sure my G70 has that? There is a front grill that has the dark chrome around the grill periphery If that is what your talking about? If not elaborate more where on the bumper your at? I only use my quick detailer sprayed on a micro towel to clean my tinted chrome areas and so far have not had and staining or issues. I think whatever coating is on top of the trim pieces is a POS and very fragile.
