  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Beware dark chrome issues

I had mine in last week to get the rear window issue looked at. Service manager didn't even look at it and told my Service rep to order the parts as it was a known issue. Parts came in two days later and were replaced along with my first oil change all in same day. 2 for 2 on solid experiences with my dealers Service dept.

Oh man... My one week old car also has some weird stuff going on over the trims

At first I thought it was some water marks, but i can't remove it.

I sent an email to the guy who sold me to see how should I proceed to have it fixed

That is the dark chrome layer peeling off. The only fix is replacement.

I am having the same issue with my 2019 G70 3.3t Sport. I have had it for 15 and 1/2 months, the unique issue with mine is that I had the car lifetime ceramic coated with Ceramic Pro 3 days after I purchased it. I noticed a few times while washing it, by hand always that the dark chrome around the windows was looking like it had been out in the sun for about 10 years. It was due for its aftercare 1 year ceramic coat follow up and I was talking with the detailer telling him that the ceramic coating may be failing. He was like nope, that is an issue with the chrome. Reached out to the dealer as I needed to have the sun roof noise fixed, and they stated the same. We have a compound and will try to rub it out, if not we will order replacement parts. Not happy this is happening, also feel that the dealer should pay to have the ceramic coating placed back on the new parts.

I will keep you posted if the rub out works or if new parts were needed and how the dealer resolved this for me.
Update, received the car back and inspected the buffing out of the dark chrome. Looked at the job inside the service bay and not outdoors. Next day saw the car in direct sunlight a became aware the issue was not resolved. Took the car back to the service manager who immediately agreed and has ordered new parts. Update on the sunroof I will post at the sunroof link.

So here's my update. My manager said it should be replaced under warranty, but as someone already mentioned, they will have to order an it will should be requested in avance. He told me I could schedule the change right away, or if I prefer it could be done on the 12k maintenance. I took the later option, so I can wait to see if there's any other peeling and do all at the same time.

I'm looking at buying a G70 Dynamic Edition, and this issue is seriously making me reconsider that choice. I'd really rather not deal with having to warranty something like this, especially with the exacerbated problems with Genesis dealerships.

I have the same "tarnishing" issues on the trim for my 2021 G70 sport...dark coated trim around the windows. Just got it last week...has 150 miles on it. I picked up the car at night and didn't notice it under the dealer lights. Taking it back this weekend, so hopefully they will replace it all!

Over in the G80 section, folks are experiencing premature peeling of the dark film which is overlayed on to the chrome trim for the sport models. I hope we dont experience the same thing, but it looks to be the same design. Something to keep an eye on. I was hoping that the dark chrome was the base color of the material, but its apparently just a tint coat applied over the base chrome.
I had to have the dark chrome replaced on my 2020 G70 Sport. It looked oxidized when I purchased the car but thought that it was a film over the tint. It took some convincing but they replaced it around all four windows.

This has been a problem since 2017/2018. Check out the G80 sport discussion. Some people got their trim replaced two or three times. There is a problem with the window trim and the replacement trim seems to be bad as well. It is the lacquer that comes off. You don't want this with a new car but it is just cosmetic. The trims hold up fine without the lacquer.

Thanks Gator. I took it to a dealer last Saturday, and the service advisor looked at the trim and said right away “oh yeah, my manager had the same issue”. They’ve ordered the parts for around all windows. Should get them this week...hopefully. Hope the next set is better than the originals!

I am on my second round of replacement trim, with some different areas this time. First time we replaced rear window trim on passenger and driver side. This time replacing both front sides and the bottom pieces on both rear sides. The top piece on the rear that were replaced have held up so far. Hoping to get a good batch all around this time.

Had issues on my front driver's side trim, only the lower portion. Had to take the car in for maintenance and they polished the chrome and looks really good. Dealer told me they are being pushed to polish first and then replace if that doesn't work.

Same with me. Dealer initially said they would order and replace. Then they changed their mind and said they are going polish first and order parts if it doesn’t work. Said they get charged $1000 for the parts. The way I see it, that’s their concern, not mine. Shouldn’t have sold me a car with imperfections on the trim. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

I am wondering how they polished the chrome. I would try that on my car.

The issue with polishing is, it removes the "dark tint" to the chrome, making it shiny chrome. I've had mine replaced, and the replacement set is starting to look like crap. I'll be making a trip to the dealership in a week or so.

Ugh! You guys are scaring the crap out of me about buying the sport package. That’s the trim I really wanted to buy and reading this has me feeling some sort of way. How widespread of an issue do you think this may be?

Every single car, most likely.

I have not had any dark chrome issues, but My car is garaged and only 7k miles. Also you know what they say if there is 1 or 2 dozen complaints on the forum but the thousands with no issues do not broadcast.

My 2019 G70 is also majorly suffering form this - I am going to contact the dealer as well, and I'm glad to see other people who are also having an issue, and the dealership is stepping up.

Pictures enclosed - sorry for all the pollen!
