If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Bicycle Rack Possibilities for G70?

Don't know how this rack affects gas mileage, but several years ago I had a ski rack on my '70 Volvo and left it on all year. I noticed my gas mile took a hit, but didn't think it was much. I then checked the gas mileage over a couple of tanks, took the rack off and check the mileage again for a couple of tanks. I was surprised to find with the rack on, I was getting 10% less mileage. End of leaving the rack on except for ski season. I don't think they had wind deflectors at that time.

Hold off a few more days Dan. Genesis Canada has confirmed to me via e-mail they expect to offer a trailer hitch for the G70 this Summer:

"Thank you for contacting Genesis Motors Canada and requesting information on our new luxury brand.
We are developing an accessory hitch designed for the G70 that will allow you to carry items such as bikes, skis & snowboards.
This option is slated to be in market by Summer 2019.
For availability in the U.S., please contact Genesis Motors USA.
They can be reached by phone at 1-(844) 340-9741 Monday to Friday, 5:00 AM - 7:00 PM and Saturdays 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM.
You may also reach them via email at customercare@genesismotorsusa.com.
Regards,

Joyce"

I have asked Genesis USA whether they intend to offer this hitch:

"Gentlemen,
You recently informed me you could not confirm that Genesis will offer a hitch-based bicycle rack for my 2019 G70 Design Edition. Please see the attached e-mail received from Genesis Canada.
Could you please advise whether this rack will be made available in the US? If not, would you please confirm a US owner will be able to purchase the Canadian rack and have it installed without affecting his US warranty.
Thank you in advance."

I'll update as soon as I receive a definitive answer.

Jim

Did they give you a weight rating?

Engineerist,

I posted, in quotes, what I received from both Genesis Canada and Genesis USA. That's all I've received.

I would assume any hitch accessory offered by Genesis Canada would be sufficiently robust for at least a bike rack with bikes installed. But you know what they say about assumptions...

2 bikes plus the rack probably won't weigh over 100 lbs. The real question is tongue weight. If a receiver hitch was able to take up to 200 lbs, I think it would be fine although I would be careful about bumpy roads where the bike rack bounced up and down excessively.

I spoke to Genesis Canada last week and also to a Dealership and nobody has any clue on when this hitch will be available or in what stage of development it's in. This is a bit frustrating since all other cars in the same class such as BMW, Audi etc...has hitch and roof racks available for their cars...Why being so secretive about this? and why keep saying it will be available soon when there has been posts about this subject mentioning then saying so Months ago and still no update...

Well, it works. Sunroof both vented and full open. Definitely noisier, but that's to be expected Thule doesn't make a wind deflector yet for the WingBar Evo. Next step is a bike mount and possibly a basket mount.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hello Absintheuphoria

Would it be possible for you to post the Fitkit & Foot numbers. Thule still says no application is available for this car.

Have you tried to put anything on top such as bikes or cargo box? Is everything stable?

Thanks

I used the 2019 Stinger Kit. The gutter, frame, and measurements were similar looking at a Stinger in person. As I noted earlier, I made one slight adjustment but other than that it mounts. Currently it passes the, "Pull and tug on the F***** like hell" test. I still haven't decided if I'm wanting a bike mount or basket more. With my lack of free time and requirement for random additional cargo I'm leaning more towards the basket ATM.

The kit breakdown:
-Thule WingBar or Squarebar (use this one if you want the wind deflector as they don't make one yet for the WingBar). The Wingbar is still kinda noisy, so not sure if going with the cheaper Square bar with deflector would be less noise.
-Thule Evo Clamp 710501
-Kit 5081

*Edit: I'm seeing through some 3rd party sources (not Thule... in fact Thule and Yakima just read from scripts and aren't very helpful) that some Thule bike mounts (ex Thule Circuit XT) can attach to the Thule Canyon Basket (the black wire one, not the aluminum), so my next purchase will probably be the basket if I'm able to cross utilize it.

Thanks man! very helpful info.

I'm so stuck between what you did which seems to work and what Thule head office told me, they simply said they tried and could not make it work on the G70 since it has a lazer-brazed roof and will not make a roof rack for this model in the future...

Not that i want to have you be a guinea pig, but i am very curious if it's gonna hold on overtime with a good load on it?

Please keep us posted as i am very tempted to go this route.

Thanks
Pat

Thanks for the info and pics of your Thule rack system. Can you please explain why the Yakima rack (in the Stinger configuration) didn't work? I have an existing Yakima rack (for my old TSX) and was hoping to reuse some of the elements (i.e. round bars, SKS locks) of that system.

The side clips are angled the opposite direction they need to be. They're angled more acute, below 90 deg, which doesn't conform to the gutter which is way more obtuse. So using the Stinger Yakima setup there was a gap inside the gutter clip which would not have made it stable. Additionally the rubber foot pads, regardless of the clips I used (the store let me look at every clip model they had) would require the rubber foot to sit on the black plastic part of the roof, not the metal frame.

Then the Thule system have obtuse clips. Honestly not sure how the Yakima kit works on the Stinger since they have similar gutters...

Thanks for the insights. So if I understand correctly, the angle of the Thule clips do conform with the shape of the roof thereby providing the stability that the Yakima clips aren't able to?

Thanks for the clarification. I plan to visit Rack Attack this weekend and get outfitted with the requisite hardware from Thule. Cheers.

Is this the black, top part of the roof surrounding the sunroof, or is this in regards to the metal frame?

Based on the recommendations of Absintheuphoria, I purchased the Thule EVO rack system (with square bars) which comprised the EVO Clamp kit 710501 and EVO Fit Kit 5081 (which is designed for the Kia Stinger). As you can see, the front EVO foot clamp fits perfectly with the rubber base pad fitting nicely over the crease in the roof line. The rubber base pad for the rear foot clamp doesn't fit quite as well because the pad is too narrow relative to the width of the roof at the point. Like Absintheurophia, I deviated slightly from the Kia Stinger installation instructions by widening the foot clamp spacing to #44 (instead of #40 that's prescribed for the Stinger). Other than that, the rack seems to fit well and is solidly attached to the roof. I've not yet had a chance to attach anything to the roof but I have accessories for bikes, a windsurfer and kayaks, and will be trying them out over the coming weeks.

Absintheuphira - have you attached anything to the rack yet? Any issues? Did you end up cutting/shaving off the inside lip of the rubber base pad on the rear foot clamps for a better fit that conforms to the shape of the roof?

PD705 (Patrick) - in an earlier post you indicated that you didn't a expect a roof-mount option to be possible as there are no factory pick-up points (roof is laser-brazed and has no ditch), so an OE-fitment rack is out of the question. You also mentioned that Thule had advised that a clamp-on rack is likely not possible due to the extremely steep angle of the roof pillar profile. Is the issue more of a fitment problem or are there limitations with respect to the structural integrity of the lazer-bazed roof and its ability to accommodate a load? Clearly, we have demonstrated that the Thule EVO system does fit the G70.

I adjusted my rear pads so the 'lip' wrapped over the edge of the white paint just like the front ones do. As for shaving, I didn't make any other adjustments aside from the width expansion for the rear mounts from the Stinger instructions.

I haven't mounted anything yet as I've had to take on some house renovations so time/money atm has been diverted away. However, I'm still 90% certain I'll be going with the basket- although I would like to find one in a store somewhere to test and make sure the sunroof can still open (I saw the basket clamps for the Yakima basket and they're a lot thicker than normal bike clamps- plus there will be 4 of the holding onto the bars, not just 2).

Good job! Glad yours worked out as well.

I'm surprised that you are able to position the rear rubber base pads inward enough so that the rubber lip wraps over the inside edge of the roof. I found that by positioning the base pads in such a manner, the metal clamps aren't sufficiently long to extend down and adequately secure the rack underneath the door frame. If you look at image below, I have the metal clamp positioned so that most of its lower length (approx. 1.5-2") attaches to the underside of the door frame. If I were to position the rubber base pad further inward on the roof, only the trailing edge of the metal clamp (perhaps 0.5") would be able to grab onto the underside of the door frame which I don't think makes for a very secure attachment.

Well, I was able to confirm that my J-bars (& kayak) fit quite nicely on the G70 with the Thule EVO rack system with square bars. I didn't have a chance to take it out on the road (hence, you don't see any tie down straps) but I am still curious as to whether the car can accommodate a roof load. Given Thule's response that they can't make a roof rack work for the G70, is the issue fitment or the structural limitations of the lazer-brazed roof? Before I load up my second kayak and head to the lake, I would appreciate PD705 (Patrick's) thoughts on this issue.
