  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Black smoke staining bumper

Or buy a 2012 4.6 instead... last of the non-GDI.

I purchased my 2012 Genesis 3.8 in mid August. Have the same black smoke on my bumper as mentioned below. I just created a case with Hyundai customer service yesterday 10/22/12. They say don't have a current case or even a history on this issue. Can't believe it has not happened already and no one has brought it to their attention before. The salesman who sold me my Genesis has black smoke on his silver Genesis demo. The dealership say the black smoke is due to the fuel injected GDI engine which creates black smoke. They checked all the operating specs of the engine and they were within engine operating tolerances. I say the exhaust out the bumper looks good, but functionally attention to prevent this black smoke from collecting on the bumper and chrome exhaust channel is required. It appears the tailpipe needs to be extended with the chrome extensions or the tail pipe turned down possibly. In any event it is an engineering defect issue that requires a solution by Hyundai. The dealership says they can not do anything to void the warranty. Hyundai customer service needs to be made aware of this situation and to provide a proper solution to this issue of this great automobile we all enjoy.

It's annoying, but not the end of the world. Wipe it off.

I have made my complaint known with corporate. Need others to do the same in order for them to resolve the issue. They are at least aware of the issue, but have not come up with a proposed solution. They need to fix this design flaw or they will lose start to lose current owners and future owners. Please make them aware by opening a case with corporate. We have to let them know we are not happy with them by ignoring this issue. Are they a different car company?

I also get the soot on the exhaust tips of my non GDI 4.6 2010 Genesis and have since the beginning. It has so perplexed me that I loose sleep, can't eat, developed a nervous twitch and repeatedly beat my wife and dog. I am considering a suit against anyone my sleazy lawyer will sue for the emotional stress, shingles and irritable bowel syndrome I have been suffering. Please help. Who would have thought that the result of internal combustion was soot? What lies will they tell us next?

I'm with you plus drinking too much. Who's for a frivolous class action suit?

Count me in. The black soot looks really bad against my black car. Rectal itch is probably next.

Whatever brand that green car wash detergent I buy at WalMart is - it gets it off while washing the car. Gone, I mean gone. Looks good till I drive it some and then it starts building up again. But when I wash the car, it is Gone.

Matter of fact, that car needs washed right now. Who'd have thought yellow could get so dirty and not really show the dirt much (I noticed the windows being dirty before I do the paint.)

You may be pleased to learn that there is probably a fix in the works. They will likely call it the 2014 Genesis.

Wow, sarcasm lol. How witty, snippy, and learned….you guys win with the positive power of your posts. Such the good job of encouragement as employees and protectors of Hyundai brand in being so trivial to a consumer of your product. A purchase of 40K+ on a vehicle and now one gets a new job to scrub soot off on hand and knee to keep it nice. Would have been nice to have been informed upfront....maybe a deal breaker. Any of you interested in a white, low miles, 2012 Genesis…just pick up the payments. I believe someone has mentioned the longtime possible fix….re-engineered for 2014. Too bad, otherwise a great car.

I love it! I have noticed soot on the inside of the exhaust tips on other cars I have owned too. I wonder if your sleazy lawyer would consider a class action suit against all vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket exhaust companies as well. Maybe everyone who has ever purchased a car might be able to get like 22 cents...... :D

Make sure your "sleazy lawyer" is willing to work for a percentage of the settlement or you will really understand the meaning of “sleazy” after he / she finishes financially gutting you.

Is this thread for real?

No more real then the infamous 12 inch trouser snake.

Im going snipe hunting this weekend... any takers ? Sorry if you own a white car you cant come for fear of dust on your car.

Do you have the fastest number to corporate? I will call ASAP on that as well

Black soot on the exhaust is an indication that the mixture is too rich. All of my other cars would develop this condition while driving around town, but the tailpipe would turn white after a road trip.

I would hope that Hyundai would change the software (or whatever is required) to resolve this issue and raise gas mileage at the same time. Or maybe it is necessary to run 'too rich' with GDI to keep from burning up the engine?

Yea, that crap made in China with acid. Good stuff. :D

I was told by my Hyundai dealer that the oily, black residue was being emitted from the catalytic converter because I'm burning 10% ethanol/gasoline. I am concerned that ultimately the converter will be "used up". When I contacted Hyundai Customer Support about the problem, their response was that "10% ethanol is perfectly acceptable, but any higher percentage or methanol was not acceptable". They also referred me to a fuel system cleaner available from the dealer that " may curtail the black and oily residue that builds up on your exhausts". I think I will get rid of it before the converter warranty runs out. It's a 2012 with 5,400 miles on it.

Why is this thread in the TSB forum? I looked through it curious to see if there might be something to this (not that I expected to  ). It personally doesn't bother me at all, but I can see others distracted by it.

Recommend to moderator to move to general forum so others don't waste time here???
