  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Blank Instrument Cluster

My replacement seems to be working. FYI, I was initially told that the replacement would be a multi-day process, cluster needed to be sent out for programming, etc...but I pushed back that a forum member said a tech came to his house and did the whole job in a few hours. Turns out that the GV80 (or some other model) had a widespread cluster issue and those clusters did need to be sent out for programming, so my dealer just assumed it was the same for the GV60. BUT the GV60 could be programmed in house with the use of connected services. No need to send off site. They only found that out because I pressed the issue.
Mine had to be sent out, but technically I wasn't even supposed to know. I was checking in to see when my part would be delivered and they told me it was shipped to California for programming, and that they were planning to call me and set up an appointment when it was delivered back to the dealership. Once they set up the appointment, it only took 1.5 days for the install.

Unfortunately though, the replacement isn't working for me. I picked up the vehicle yesterday and walked out to see the blank screen again when I attempted to start it this afternoon.

Wow, that sucks! Sorry to hear. This is the first failed replacement I've heard about. Please keep us posted on what next steps are offered. As to the sending out, I'm no expert on any of this but all I can say is my replacement was delivered to the parts dept. Service guy gave me the story about sending out and after I pushed back he called me later and told me I was right. The programming could be done in house and the whole job with all of the recall updates took less than a day, including the car wash.

Thanks. Seriously, all the things I heard about Genesis' dealer service and support, is coming true. Night and day vs. the great service I got from BMW. You shouldn't have had to push back - and I probably didn't need to wait for mine to be sent to California and back, which took almost 2 more weeks.

In all fairness, my service has been good. The tech is knowledgeable but mine was the first GV60 to have this issue. He was going on clusters that look the same as ours in another model. Those did need to be sent back. My bigger issue is with Hyundai corporate who has yet to say anything official on this. Will be interesting to see what they say about your replacement cluster not working. Are they simply going to offer you another replacement? That reminds me, I asked my tech if there were any way to know if my replacement was from the same lot as the defective cluster and he said the new one had a different part number. Perhaps you should inquire.

My new cluster (and) the old are in California now. I made sure that the old and new were from different mfg lots as I did not want the same issue again.

Hi - how did you confirm this?

I realized today when the screen comes back to life it starts stats (trip mileage, mileage after last charge, miles left...) from zero. The longer it stays dark (up to 10 minutes once) the more inaccurate data is. It was a surprise, since I was sure that data accumulates elsewhere and screen is only for displaying it

Thanks. I just asked them to check, assuming they haven’t shipped my old one back yet.

That seems kind of weird to me. If this was just a screen / display issue, it doesn't seem like that would be the case (what you are seeing).

Yet another indication that this is probably more of a software/firmware issue than a display hardware issue.

Yeah - at this point, I'll give them one more shot when I take my new cluster back in next week for troubleshooting. But, if they can't find anything, I'll likely just wait for enough folks to report this - so Genisis can find a solution and issue an official recall or bulletin (or push another update). Not the greatest feeling after only having the car for a couple of months. But, not sure there's other options at this point other than bugging my 800# case manager.

Pretty much every issue I've had with my car so far has been firmware/software related. And both major OTA updates have messed up my head unit/display. Like it or not, today's modern cars are just computers on wheels, with the same drawbacks related to software bugs. Let's hope the manufacturers get better at testing out the software updates before releasing them.

It is possible that the cluster does maintain the data and so until it starts there isn't any being recorded. It's also possible that even if the actual data is maintained elsewhere, it needs to be triggered from the cluster initializing. Regardless, I don't think this circumstance weighs in favor of the issue being software over hardware. The bottom line is that until the cluster is started, data is not being recorded. The unknown issue is WHY the cluster is not starting as normal. While I used to favor the software theory, not so sure anymore. My cluster has been working fine since replacement and there is only one exception I know of to replacement curing the problem. The fact that our forum mate's brand new cluster had the issue makes it slightly more likely that this is a hardware issue and our fellow forum mate was just unlucky getting two bad units. Presumably, if the OTA software created a bug it would affect everyone (not the case) so it would have to be something going wrong with the OTA update for some, which the bad replacement cluster presumably did not receive. Still far from conclusive.

It’s possible that different cluster units have different revisions of a chip, and that an OTA update could be compatible with some revisions and not others. I worked in Software development and seen this many times if the different versions aren’t all properly accounted for and tested with the updates.

I’ve found that I don’t have the issue if my car has been plugged in and charging overnight. (This is a very unscientific observation.)
yes.

I've found this also, *IF* the car is still charging when I get into it. if the car is plugged in and fully charged--so, it's not actively charging--the issue crops up.

Our issues with the blank cluster started AFTER an OTA update.

Same here. That’s why I think it’s software related, perhaps coupled with an incompatible hardware version.

Had my GV60 in 3 times now, and each time they try something new...from resets, to replacing some kind of connector wire, to finally ordering a new display. Unfortunately, that display came in and was DOA so now i'm waiting for another and they said they have no ETA on when a new display will arrive.

On another note, and not sure if it's related but ever since the dealership started trying to fix this black screen issue, i've been getting a "Feature Currently Unavailable." message on the infotainment screen randomly when trying to operate anything from the steering wheel or the dedicated buttons. Super annoying as you can't change volume, change stations, etc... Sometimes restarting the car will resolve but sometimes not. I'll search the forum for this i guess and start a new thread if regarding if needed.
DTironman,Did you have any luck finding a fix for the “feature currently unavailable “ I have a UK GV60 and have had the same issue but luckily no blank screen as yet.

My car is in for recall service and I had them check the issue with the blank screen as well. According to their notes, they scanned and found a fault where "FOR THE CCIC FURTHER DIAG DETERMINED THAT VARIANT CODING WAS NOT CORRECT, PROPERLY SET THE VARIANT CODING AND FAULT WAS NO LONGER PRESENT"

Wonder if this will fix the issue. Anyone else get this as an explanation?
Well, that didn't fix the issue. Now I have to decide whether to go through the trouble of making another service appointment, or waiting a bit longer and hoping they figure this out and issue a proper TSB.
