Bluetooth, XM, voice command, etc...update

For those who had followed the thread about voice command acting up after canceling XM radio.

I've updated that thread with my experience and would like to let you know that more will follow-up.
My car is at the Hyundai dealership where a team of 2 engineers (an XM engineer and a Hyundai engineer) will be working on my car and do some serious testing Tomorrow Feb. 23rd. why? Cause I told my Service Manager "I bet you any amount of money that when when the next free trial of XM comes, it will do the same thing." He didn't take this well and screamed to head office to get to the bottom of this problem. (I'm amazed that they are taking this seriously and sending a team here to get to the bottom of this)

As you know or maybe don't know, I had major problems after the XM trial period ended some time in December of last year. Being one that uses the Voice command ALOT, I had major problems, it would freeze up my systems and nothing would work anymore till I had shut down the car for awhile.

Hyundai Canada has since changed the HU (nothing changed when HU was replaced) and then they changed the amp in my car. Voice command has been working great since.

I will keep you posted on whatever they tell me.

Regards,

I think you are exactly right. I have the same thing and have reported it here and to my dealer with no help in resolving this situation. I truely believe that when we get a free XM period the problems will start all over again. I try not to use the voice command at all until this is resolved. We should demand a rebate of some sort to pay us for a lost system we all paid for.

Please post the results of what they find. Thanks

Thanks for the update.

I do have the same problem and I got a brand new HU last Monday. This is the new version that has the latest maps and a couple of new useless menu options for the car suspension.
The bluetooth issue persists and I even feel there is something wrong with this whole new HU. Some FM radio stations sounds like crap and when I try to use the bluetooth, I get a SRS error message that I never got before. One time when trying to call my wife, the HU suddendly rebooted and all the settings went back to factory defaults.

I told the service manager about the XM radio theory and he is going to order a new amp for my car to see if solves these problems.

OK here's an update...
Just spoke with the SM at my local dealership.

Please keep in mind this is what was told to me and have no idea how accurate this may be...

There's 3 people working on my car.
1 from Hyundai USA, 1 from XM USA and 1 from Hyundai Korea (All engineers)

I'll try to keep this short.

My radio had XM and I didn't even know it. (Maybe this is why it's been working great!)
They called XM Canada to cancel the subscription on my car.
They did NOT succeed has they could not find my ID in their system.
They later found out that my car was subscribed to XM USA!!!
Nobody has a clue how that happened. XM US could not find my ID and they could NOT remove the subscription in my car.
Talk about weird. They wasted an hour trying to do so.
So the Korean Engineer is now taking the new amp out of the car and bringing it to Korea for further analysis.

They put an older amp back in my car but they put a new firmware update that's not available yet. A beta firmware I guess. (I'll check as soon as I get the car back) They drove in my car for approx an hour and tested the sh"t out of my system...he said it worked really well.

They are now doing the Map update. HE said there putting every update they have and have asked me to give them feedback how my system goes.

My car won't be ready till Tomorrow and will keep you posted how it goes.

At the end of the conversation my Service Manager said if voice activation screws up just one time I'll be getting XM forever.

I have an update from my side and maybe offer a new theory for this issue.

My car was at the dealer for two days where they were doing several tests.

After half day or so without any luck, they decided to grab a brand new Genesis Tech from the lot that did not exhibit any issues with the DIS system, parked it next to my car and started swapping parts one by one.

At one point the problem on my car went away. Then, they tried to reproduce the issue on the other car using the parts they removed from my car but, the other car never exhibited any problems.

Then, they decided to swap all the parts back to my car and surprisingly, they never got my car to exhibit the issue again.

Dealer's Conclusion: One of the harness that connects these multiple components wasn't making a proper contact and it was the root cause of this issue. They don't know for sure which one it was but, when manually reconnecting the components, the connector started making proper contact.

I will be testing my car for few days and I will provide a new update.

I wonder if it was a poor connection... or by unplugging the various boxes (especially the XM/Amp unit) it got a full "power off" reset. Since pretty much EVERY Tech package car exhibits this problem if/when XM expires, it'd be hard to imagine every car has the same crappy connection. I wonder if doing a "hard reset" by unplugging the XM/amp unit for a minute or two - removing the "keep alive" battery power - will fix any/all cars when XM subscriptions expire.

I'll have to hunt through some of the service manuals: maybe pulling a fuse or two for a few minutes would be enough - easier than getting to the XM/amp unit to unplug it, and less troublesome than disconnecting the battery and screwing up all the other memories in the car.

Anybody out there right now with screwed up voice commands - XM just expired? If so, when I figure out which fuses I'll ask you to try the test. I have XM for a few years on my car... so I never see this problem. Like the tilt steering wheel issue it'd be nice to have a simple at-home "fix" until Hyundai & Lexicon solve the real problem.

edit/update: okay, after looking at the factory manuals and the DIS schematics that I have, it appears:
1: the "external amp" as Hyundai's manuals calls the trunk mounted amp unit always gets power. Unlike many electronic boxes on cars it does NOT have a "main power" that's switched (i.e. ON only if the engine is running or ignition key/mode is in the ACCessories position) and a low-current memory "keep alive" that's always powered. Instead, the Tech package amp has one big honkin' power feed - up to 40amps. It's in the fusible link box mounted under the hood, driver side (U.S. cars driver side). It's the box closest to the front of the car - right behind the blue windshield washer fluid cap; the box is 4 sided but isn't rectangular. Use the clip at the front of the box to unlock & pop the lid... then look inside the lid for the fuse & relay labels. Look for fusible links #7 and #8, they should have ID labels "AMP-1" and "AMP-2" - on my car, they're almost dead-center in the box. AMP-1 will be a 40 amp fusible link, AMP-2 is 30 amp. (mine are blue and purple colored)

2: AMP-1 is the "AV JBL AMP" power feed. I haven't found what AMP-2 is for. Yet. I would have guessed power for the non-Tech amps but my 2009 Tech car has a fusible link in both AMP-1 and AMP-2.

So maybe unplugging AMP-1 for a minute or two will reset the XM/amp unit. I'd suggest the following procedure as a test:
1: Park and shut OFF the car for an hour or so; we want to make sure the A/V system is fully powered down, not in the STANDBY mode it uses right after parking the car.
2: pop the hood. Though if I understand the STANDBY mode correctly this will "wake up" the A/V system back to STANDBY mode. Arg.
3: open the fuse/relay box and unplug the AMP-1 fusible link for a couple of minutes.
4: restore the AMP-1 link, close the fuse/relay box, close the hood.
5: start the car, turn the A/V system ON and give it a moment to go through it's power-up stuff. When the NAV system displays a map... try a voice command.

I'd be really interested if the folks working TimeOut's car would try these tests - re-enable XM, cancel it, verify voice mode sucks now, then pull AMP-1.

Hopefully removing a fusible link with the car power off won't fry the amp unit. It'd be a pretty crappy design if removing a "protective fuse" leads to damage.

There are regular fuses for the rest of the A/V system in the two fuse boxes on either side of the dash. They have logical names: AUDIO-1, AUDIO-2, and AUDIO-3. AUDIO-1 is on the passenger side, -2 and -3 are on the driver side box. So if pulling the AMP-1 or AMP-2 fusible links doesn't do it, shut the car off, let it sit an hour, and try pulling the three AUDIO fuses. This may reset the radio station presets/memories in the head unit though... and it could reset your balance/fader/tone controls too.

Since the XM/amp unit ALWAYS has power (car OFF or not) it never gets a hard reset so if it "goes stupid" it'll stay stupid. Either remove the fusible link or unplug the battery.

mikec,

I really believe you're correct about the power cycle on/off theory.
Next time, if it happens again to me, I will unplug the battery for 5 minutes and see.

BUT, would do this ONLY in front of the Service Manager at Hyundai.

Thanks

PS. I have the latest software put on my HU and so far it's working great!

Hello QCTLG,

Would it be possible to get the name of your dealer, so that my dealer can talk to them? When my dealer talks to Hyundai, Hyundai claims there is no XM/VA issue. They told me to go pound sand, in so many words. I've escalated the issue, and am now waiting for a Hyundai Field Service Engineer to come to the dealership to start looking at the problem. I have gotten absolutely nowhere for three months now.

Please check your PM, I sent you all the details who to call.
I had to get the OK from him before sending you the info.

Good luck

I have a similar problem that happened a couple days ago while trying to tune a HD-2 radio station. While driving, I was hitting a lot of DIS buttons, scanning local stations, not having luck finding the one I was looking for, hit the XM button (I'm not subscribed, not paying that is), and finally tried a voice command to select the station by call letters. There may have been some more fumbling around, I usually just have it on climate control screen, but the FM tunning screen came up after the command, but, no sound!
Then problems cascaded. I could select any of the 6 DIS buttons, and see it's screen, but the knob was disabled. And the voice command button had no response beep. I stopped, turned off the car, restarted and everything worked normally. Then tried another voice command, and the same thing happened. Leaving it overnight seemed to clear it up for normal operation, but now I'm afraid to try a voice command again.

Wonder if I should call XM, and activate my 3 month trial? There seems to be some bug here... I have a 2009, and not upgraded my maps.

Is there some master reset to reload the software, other than trying the fuse mentioned above?

edit; I see this is addressed in the head unit problems. Has it been confirmed that disconnecting the battery fixes the issue?
