Hi Everyone,

I've been looking at the Genesis for 2 years now and finally decided to purchase a used one. I've been looking for a few weeks now and haven't really found one to my liking (mileage and history) until I came across a '12 Genesis 3.8 with 35,000 miles and the tech package for almost $17K. Its almost too good to be true as its about 2-3K less than similar cars and its from a dealer! Usually i find the best priced cars from private sellers.

Anyway a did a lot of digging and researching and couldn't find anything wrong with the car except that it was a personal lease which I don't mind. Clean carfax and autocheck, no accidents so I called and set an appointment for Saturday. I did some further analysis on the pics and noticed some frame/structural differences between other cars, which now has me very hesitant. This is where I need your opinions ladies and gentlemen. I've attached a pic as a reference (1st) as well as the same exact car from another dealer (2nd). Do you guys see any differences? I see the door spacing and lining different, which could mean a big accident that was not reported. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

The dealer is 5 hours away so I would hate to drive there for nothing. But I do want to point out that the dealer has extremely high ratings. What do you guys think? Assuming I test drive it and everything seems fine, should I still go ahead and buy it? I'm asking as I know some of you have had lots of experience buying cars, which i dont have.

I see what you see but I think its those rubber protectors that some dealers slide on to protect the door.
I would call the dealer and enquire,

John

I agree with John. Looks like that rubbery door lining. Notice how it stops abruptly at the top and bottom.

I'd still ask the dealer before driving 5 hours, but looks pretty harmless to me.

Yeah it's that crappy door edge guard material. Easily removed. Mine came with it too. I pulled it off before I even drove off the lot.

Ah, that brought much needed alleviation. Will definitely call and confirm with them. Thanks John!

Thanks craigt and NSXNEXT for the confirmation! At least now I know it wasn't my eyes playing games with me.

If anyone has suggestions on things i should look out for when checking the genesis please feel free to chime in.

Will be making the drive early tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I'll be coming back with a new genesis!

Re: Buying a '12 hyundai Genesis - Need help and opinions!

I bought a 2012 not long ago with similar mileage in Canada for 20k Canadian including the tech package, premium and navigation (fully equipped) and I noticed in the states you can get it for less US dollars if you look hard enough.

Luckily, I live in what seems like the place with the most Genesis Sedans in Canada, so I was lucky enough to have options.

I think for your car, maybe it's just the pic, but the front bumper looks like it's not installed properly as it doesn't align with the fender, so be careful. Outside of that, I like the 2012, no issues yet, it has 5-10 years of warranty total I believe in the US so you'll be set.

Little things I've noticed are when changing from P to D or R, the car seems to move a bit. It's a smooth motion, not a harsh kick, but I don't know if that's normal for all Genesis Sedans or just mine (I'll bring it up during my next dealer visit). The seats are also wide and not exactly bucket seats so during hard turning you get thrown around a bit, but if you're OK with that, the car drives great, it's fast and the suspensions are not too soft, not too firm. Good luck!

Thanks for your input! Unfortunately, I didn't find a fully equipped one for under 20K plus I'm not sure if I would pay an extra 3K for the tech features.

I will look out for the issue you mentioned - might help bring the price down.

I see what you're referring to on the pic and it does seem a little off. I will do a closer inspection once I see it in person. I've attached more pics as a reference.

The wheel well also has the goofy rubber/plastic trim, making it look like the panels don't align.

I noticed that as well and was wondering what was that. Thanks for the heads up.

The part that concerned me was the opposite side where the panels meet by the headlight. It seems like its a little off but not too sure.

Ahh. I see what you're talking about. It's strange because the "fold" of the two panels are perfectly aligned.

Yeah there's a really sharp shadow because the panels aren't very aligned, as if they replaced the bumper or took it off and didn't put it back perfectly.

Mine's in black but notice the even spacing between the same panels: http://orig13.deviantart.net/6572/f/2015/219/1/0/2012_hyundai_genesis_sedan_by_dxbigd-d94o7f4.jpg It's not enough to cause a shadow like that so definitely bring it up. (If anything, just to save some money)

Thanks for the reference pic. I used it to compare it in person. Seems like the lighting in the picture made it look different. All the parts seems like they were good person without any abnormalities.

I'm officially a Genesis owner! Found a few minor annoyances like the bottom engine cover and inner plastic part outside the tire out of its place so tried to lower the price more but they were one of those "bottom-line, no haggle" dealers so they didn't budge. However they already ordered the new parts and will be fixing it as soon they come in. All in all, the car was in pretty good condition, I'm not a professional but I didn't notice any bolts missing, any misaligned metal parts, weird noises, color differences, etc.

I probably have a lot of reading to do on this forum to get more info but any suggestions on getting a warranty on it? They offered essentially a 4 year/65,000mile B-B warranty for $1400 (via Zurich)...are there any better ones out there?

I appreciate everybody's advise here especially since it was pretty last minute! Definitely was helpful on my purchase.

Congratulations,,,,

Credit unions offer though third parties good warranties at fair prices.

Definitely get an extended warranty. If the head unit goes alone, that is about $4k.

Congrats on your purchase. I just got a 2012 myself last Thursday, and like you, I was dealing with one of these "no haggle" dealers--until I pulled out my check book, told the sales mgr what I was willing to pay, and that was it. When he could see I was ready to walk, he didn't lower the price of the Genesis; he just decided to give me a lot more money for my Cadillac on trade. :D

I got the best Zurich extended warranty they had: 72 months, 100,000 miles bumper to bumper. $1895

Does the 72 months start on date of your purchase? Is the 100k on top off the miles already showing on the car?

Thanks John

Yes and yes. I've got a b to b warranty for six years starting last Thursday, or 148,000 miles, whichever comes first.
