Hi, looks as though you have your answers, but I also bought recently out of state. About 350miles for me.
I was a MA resident purchasing in NY. Spotted a deal and communicated with the dealer who was willing to do most everything over the phone. I purchased with outside lending, so it was essentially a cash deal, and they didn't bother to sell me on the extras. The agreed upon purchase price was what I paid them plus a small dealer fee:
- Deposit to hold the car (later applied to the price)
- Did 30% down in cash (personal check was accepted)
- My Credit Union overnighted me a bank check for the loan amount, made out to the dealership. But they offered to send the check directly to them as well. My bank simply required the purchase order to make the loan.
- There was $150 in dealership fees.
But the transaction was the easy part...
Getting the car home was not. Luckily I had someone willing to take that road trip with me, but if not...I was looking at some logistical headaches.
My options came down to:
- Beg someone for a ride
- Rent a car one way, which I could not find a car rental company willing to do this in the location I was going to.
- Rent a Uhaul truck both ways with a trailer attachment ~ $275, picking the car up and bringing it back
- Rent a Uhaul one way with literally nothing in it ~$400 and driving the car back
But even then it got a little sticky, In NY you're required to have insurance when you pick up the car, same in MA, however in MA your insurance is tied in with your registration - meaning I had no insurance on the car until it was titled and registered in MA which I had to do with the car's title in my hand. Luckily the dealer sent me home on dealer plates, and I simply mailed them back.
So this was the hard part. I could not drive on my own plates with my own insurance until that car was re-titled in my state and registered.
Funny enough, they said to me if you get pulled over - the registration and insurance are taped to the back of the plate. Meaning if I had gotten pulled over, I would have needed a screw driver....
Got the car home without occasion, but the car had to sit in the garage for 4 weeks, because it had to be titled, insured and registered in person which in MA is a nightmare right now.
Anyway, it was by far the best deal, a crazy story, and anyone who thought I was normal before, now thinks I'm nuts.
