If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi Guys,

1st - Let me say, this forum rocks. Thanks for being so kick ass.

2nd - I have a '13 rspec sedan and I have gotten into two accidents (one my fault) in the past 6 months, and have two insurance claims out for each. In total, my front and back bumpers have taken damage to the parking sensors, and my front left quarter panel needs to be replaced.

3rd - I found a 2012 rspec in Houston with flood damage, link here, and was wondering if you think the parking sensors would be messed up to pull from the salvaged car?

The reason I'm considering, is that the payout from the insurance is $2K plus, and I could buy the parts new, or if this worked, have an extra salvage car for parts, in case I do some dumb shit later on.

Has anyone tried this approach, and/or have suggestions on what they think I should do?

One friend suggested that I just take it to the Hyundai collision center, and go the standard route to ensure i get all new parts, but I could save some serious money if the salvage worked, (even with shipping the car up from ATL to Boston)

Thoughts?

Greatly Appreciative,

The sensors might be ok since they are designed to be weather resistant at minimum. But that would depend on how long it sat underwater. I would say if you could get the car for <$1000 it would be worth it as a parts car, but that is highly unlikely. The major mechanicals for that car are worth >$10k. I suspect it would auction off in the $5-$10k range.

I wouldn't mess with it, but, that's just who I am.

I would do it but I'd check into it first. I just bought a 2012 genesis 3.8 for $5k in San Antonio that was a salvage due to hail. It runs and drives great though. I took it to the body shop and was quoted $11k to repair with new parts. Tail lights were $1800 of that, hood $1k, and I can't remember the rest but it was ridiculous. Ended up taking to a guy out in the country to bondo and paint it for $2500 plus I've got to buy tail lights. Found the right side for $120 that are $500 new on ebay from Korea. I bought mine on copart.com. Very easy to do. I watched one go for $2500 last week from the Houston flood and another went for $3000k.
Before you do buy I'd have it inspected. It usually costs $100-150. A lot of the flooded cars will have a crayon like line drawn where it shows how high the water went. If what you need is above that I'd do it in a heart beat vs paying for it retail. Look at the salvage auction sites at what some of the salvage genesis cars look like. The damage is light in my opinion but the parts are so damn high they get totaled. That cars headlights could be worth $400-500 each. If you pay for the inspection see if the engine and transmission got water in them. That's another $2k and $1k respectively. Don't get hung up on one car though. There's a lot of them. I'm watching 8 or 9 right now. The great thing about the flood cars is they can be had for 15-20 cents on the dollar. Hail is 30-35 cents on the dollar but they run fine. I'll give you $150 for the rear left tail light on that car. If your lucky the tires have plenty of tread. I really do think it would be hard to go wrong. I know this is my first post but if you can't tell I obsessed over it before I pulled the trigger. Send me your email or phone number if you want to go into more detail but the bottom line is pretty much you can't lose. Especially if you have wrecked it 2x.

If that bid was accepted that car went dirt cheap. Hope you got it.
