  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Group,
Just got a '13 R spec, loving it. My question is for best quality sound what is the best way to rip some of my CDs to a memory stick and get no quality losses? What format will the music be in after ripping? I have been told the MP3 format has considerable loss of range, although this is all word of mouth. I haven't been in the audiophile world for nearly 20 years. I would love to get some up to date information from someone in the know. I have some original Telarc direct to digital classical disks. These are great, and I am searching for some DVD-A based on some recomendations from the forum. My tastes are across the board from hard rock to classical. (My mom was a music teacher so I was bombarded from a young age) I am not a rap fan otherwise I am open to suggestion. Are you using any special equipment or is a computer with a good cd/dvd enough? Thanks for any help.

You can rip to FLAC and WAV for lossless. Don't know if the Genesis can read the files though.

MP3's best quality is obtained at 320 bitrate and 48k sampling. The difference between 320 and 160 is pretty obvious, and an audiophile's ear will still pickup losses in the high freqs with MP3s with some sources. But in a moving car with wind/road noise most would not notice.

There's a post or two on this forum about someone who purchased DVD-A burning software and had success with the Genny 17-Lexicon.

I have a ton of dts 5.1 audio CDs that sound great in my r spec. If you interested you can, download them on,any torrent site then burn on Disc using Nero burning software.

Sounds intriguing, but when dabbling into the copyright infringement world, what is the secret to avoiding legal action and staying out of jail? Interestingly, you can take any CD from a public library and rip it without such worries. However, when you get into online "theft" things seem to get hairier legally.

well i useually only download what i have already bought. someone was able to upconvert them. other then that i use a vpn so my ip address is from another country.

Correct. Using the maximum bitrate is the key. If you do that starting with a CD format, you will be happy. Unfortunately, most MP3 files that can downloaded from the internet, even when you pay for them, are recorded at a bitrate much lower than that. But since you are ripping from your own CD's, you should be in good shape.

I use an iPod in my car, and use a the highest bitrate when creating AAC files with iTunes.

Just to clarify, it is still technically illegal to make a copy of a library copy, if the copy persists past the library return date. But the chances of getting caught are close to zero, unlike if you download them from the internet.

The Genesis will only play MP3 files off the memory stick.

The best quality would be using the LAME encoder set for 320K and constant bit rate.

This is correct! The Lexicon audio system only reads MP3s. You can get a smaller file size by using LAME 320K VBR (variable bit rate). My ears can't tell the difference

Thanks to the Forum for all the suggestions. Looks like I get to learn some of the newest audiofile tricks now! My CDs played directly are superb in the Genesis. The 17 speaker Lexicon really sounds fantastic.
