  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Took my Genny over to Hilton Head Hyundai this am for an oil change. In and out in 45 mins. Got home and checked the oil and it had been over filled by 1/2 quart...back to the dealer I go. I had taken them 6qts of Mobil 1 so I didn't have to pay their absurd synthetic upcharge. Asked the moron tech if he put all 6 quarts in and he looks at me with a blank expression and says yes. What an idiot. He had no clue how much oil the 3.8 holds.

If they can't do something as simple as an oil change I sure don't want them doing anything else to my car. Aargh.

Not sure if the problem is with the Tech or the 3.8 Dip-stick. Mine has always read a high level from new and after every oil change since. I think there was a thread here somewhere about this.

Problem was the tech. Car takes 5.49 qts...not 6. When I talked to the service writer her response was "we always bill for 6 qts of oil". She had absolutely no clue. Can't wait to get their emailed service survey.

You need to drain out 1/2 qt of oil:
1. you have a couple options. You can get under the car and crack the oil drain plug and let 1/2 quart drip out.
2. You can buy this device and suck out 1/2 quart yourself through the dipstick tube and avoid having to get under the car.

Took it back and made the dealership take the extra 1/2 quart out...and you better believe I checked the level before I left there. Morons!!

It always amazes me when people wonder why I a change my own oil. If I were to have it done professionally, I would prefer a locally or regionally owned oil change place (not part of a national chain) where I can watch everything they do. Only rarely can you watch what a dealer does. Problem with not having the dealer do oil change on the Genesis is that anyone else will be dumbfounded by the special oil filter cartridge with o-rings, etc, so I just do it myself.

My first visit to the stealer for an oil change didnt start off well. Immediately upon getting back in the check engine light and a few other sensors lights came on. Turns out they hadn't put the oil cap on.

Remarkably by the time I got home two wheel caps were missing because after the multi point check the technician admitted he didn't know how to put them back on properly......

Exactly. I can't say for the V6, but I know for the V8 there are some specific things that no one except an owner/enthusiast DIY will know or attempt.

1. The driver side needs to be raised while the passenger side is on the ground to get out the last of the oil (not critical but complete).
2. The oil filter housing and cap is full of debris and crude. You won't see it unless you take a flashlight to it. You need to take a shop rag and fish it out.
3. When reinstalling the filter, it helps to pre-wick the filter with fresh oil to minimize the initial start when the engine oil pressure needs to normalize.

I am putting a fumoto drain plug on my oil pan next week. (see http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com/ ).

A coworker turned me on to it. With this you no longer have to mess with the drain plug (bolt) but instead just turn the nob to drain the engine oil. It will be nice not to worry about stripping bolts, replacing o-rings, etc. The Fumoto started on farm equipment and then moved on to autos.

If one had this installed then draining the extra oil would be very simple.

All this said - completely agree and sympathize with the OP: complete negligence on the dealers part. Correct oil is a fundamental part of engine maintenance. Comes from not having strong processes defined or governed at the service station. I am with Mark_888 - do it yourself.

Cheers,
Newman
