  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2013 Hyundai genesis sedan automatic. Been trying to use the shift, but for some reason, can't hit it right. Help if can thanks.

I think you need to be a little more specific about what is wrong.

Are you moving the gear selector to the right from Drive?
Does moving the gear selector up shift up one gear?
Does moving the gear selector down shift down one gear?

I mean when I shift up,do I let go of the gas and then shift,or do I Still press on the gas while I shift

No, you don't have to let go of the gas pedal, it isn't manual transmission anymore :D

I've been doing the very same thing on the beginning, lol

^^^ What he said.

Instead of letting a computer shift the auto transmission, you are controlling it. Just mash the pedal and have some fun. :D

Since its an automatic transmission, you can keep your foot on the gas weather you're in automatic or manual shift mode. The only difference in manual shift mode is that the transmission is waiting for you to tell it when to upshift/downshift rather than follow its own logic and even then it will automatically shift if rpm's get too high or low.

What has the highest 1-2 shift regarding RPMs. It is the manual shift mode or auto shift? One of the ways the shift point is earlier than the other

I too would like to hear the answer to this. Every time I drive I forget to check this, I'm too damn forgetful!

My experience is that the shift-point is identical in manual and auto mode (when the pedal is pressed all the way and clicked into sport mode). That point seem to be around 6500 rpm in both cases. I'm talking about the 8-speed tranny in the R-Spec in my case.

i got the base model, so i dont think i have a sport mode. I just be pushing it to 6000 rpm

Let me elaborate on what I called sport mode - when pressing the gas pedal all the way down, the last 5 mm you can hear a click, like a mechanical switch is triggered. That is the "give me all you have" switch - downshift to the lowest possible gear to give you the highest rpm. It will also upshift at highest possible rpm while you keep it pressed like that (~6500rpm).

Wasn't that called overdrive at some point? And we are talking about with the car running, in drive, you're flooring it?

Overdrive is really the exact opposite as it is the highest gear that allows the engine to operate the lowest possible revolutions generally for highway cruising and improved fuel mileage.

The throttle kick down switch is an actual switch built into the throttle that you can engage once the throttle pedal has reached the end of its travel. If you push the pedal all the way to the floor and then push with some force you'll feel the switch engage. I bet many people have driven this car without realizing this switch even exists as there is enough resistance to push the pedal all the way in without triggering the kick down. This switch forces the transmission into the lowest possible gear for the given speed and provides maximum acceleration.

Correct.

From Wikipedia:
The most fundamental meaning is that of an overall gear ratio between engine and wheels, such that the car is now over-geared and can no longer reach its potential top speed, i.e. the car could travel faster if it were in a lower gear, with the engine turning more quickly.

I have a 3.8L 2011 so I can only speak from the 6 speed perspective and I only drive it in manual mode. From a dead stop, I would not recommend mashing the pedal but ease into it, once you get close to 20MPH in 1st gear I would switch to second and then gun it up to 60-65 then go to third. The 6 speed atleast in the 2011 has this thing where if you accelerate too aggressively from first and then go to second, the car will automatically skip second and go to third (in only what I can guess is a false alert in the cars computer to protect it from redlining) and it will cause the car to loose acceleration dramatically and jerk a bit. Shifting from second on up is a breeze. I normally shift around 6500 - 7k rpm if I am racing it around but other than that, I would say for smooth driving auto shift around 3.5k -4 rpm. Its a good mix between good acceleration and smooth driving.

The 8 speed is lazy in auto mode, loves to hold onto high gears, and upshifts quickly if not pushing it. Manual mode is more fun and, from what I've experienced, does not shift from 1 to 3 under any circumstance.

If accelerating in a straight line, auto mode is fine as it will shift very smoothly through the gears and hit near red line before shifting.
