  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I need some major help. My 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 is at the dealer and they’ve been troubleshooting it for 10 hours with no progress.

The car isn’t recognizing the key fob and starting. It unlocks and locks the car but won’t detect it according to the dashboard. On top of that, the obd2 port isn’t working for them.

We have replaced the fob battery, tried a new battery for the car, jump started it and nothing.

The dealer said they are going through things with Corporate but they don’t have any idea.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

The car was my DD and never had issues until I parked it for 2 weeks.

Minor notes that might help:
-2 years ago we had a squirrel get into another vehicle in the winter time and destroy some wires during the winter time. I told the tech about that.
-The car was in an accident on the passenger side 4 years ago (before I owned it) and was repaired by a reputable shop.

I saw that no one has replied, hopefully the dealer can fix it. Honestly, I can't think of any one better suited to do so.

Hopefully little critters didn't eat up wiring. That could get expensive! A co-worker had rats eat wires under his hood and it cost him thousands. Sorry for the possibility, but it's likely. Hopefully the battery failed and the key just lost sync with the car.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I hope so but they haven’t been much help as of yet. Wouldn’t you think that after 10 hours of tech diagnosing it, they would have seen if squirrels chewed at the wires or not?

I have a feeling this will be expensive. I was hoping that if someone someone else experienced it, they’d share their knowledge

So the dealer can't figure it out and gave up. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

The OBDII port isn't getting power.

I'd see what they offer for a trade in. Scary thing is, after all the time they put in, it may be something simple that was not seen.

If you are willing to trouble shoot on your own, then I'd suggest you start at either the battery or the starter and work your way back.
You will probably need a service manual / wiring diagrams. Google says there is one here. Not sure if it contains wiring diagrams.
Hope it helps. Sorry about your situation, I do not own a G80, just trying to help.

On most cars the lighter fuse powers the OBD11 port, might check that fuse.

...
The OBDII port isn't getting power.

Is this a certainty, as in they measured with a voltmeter, or is this just an assumption based on the scan tool not working?
I would think that it would be easy enough to trace back and solve a problem of the port not being powered. A more difficult problem is if the real issue is that the CAN bus isn't working. That could be wiring, or more likely a defect on any one of several different modules.

I appreciate your help and am looking at the diagrams.

Thanks for explaining that. I will have to ask the tech when I pickup the car to figure out exactly what he did and did not find. The service manager just said that the their scanning tool isn't working and that the OBDII port isn't getting power.

Did the dealer use the power tap on the trigger module for the GDS rig? You don't need power on the port to make the tools run. That said, if it was still completely incommunicado, you have a combination BCM/ECM power issue that's more serious. If all the core modules in the car have entered a sleep state, you likely have a battery management system malfunction.
