  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was just on the phone with the Equus/Genesis desk at HMA asking about some Bluelink features and the rep confirmed that CarPlay IS coming to existing Genesis and Sonata cars, but she said the date is still unknown. She said owners will be notified when it's available. It's nice to at least have a confirmation that Car Play WILL be available for owners who've previously purchased. I tried to push for a time frame a little and asked if she thought it would be before the end of the year and she said she thought it was likely, but obviously didn't really know. We'll see. :)

Thanks for the info, it would be nice to have.

Maybe the fact that it's now official from Pioneer it means that availability is near (I hope!)

Thanks for the update ckon

Yes - Thanks for the update. I would love to have CarPlay on that beautiful 720p infotainment screen.

Anybody hear anything about the google competitor Android Auto becoming available on the Genesis?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Sorry to jump in on the Apple thread but I am also curious about the Android Auto. I have an I Phone 4S and am ready to upgrade. I have looked at the 6 but am leaning toward switching to the Samsung either S5 or Note 4 and am curious how they will do with the Genesis.

I'll be very curious to see, if CarPlay is indeed offered by Hyundai as a software update, if it will also be available for the last generation Tech or R-specs.

I find this highly doubtful for two reasons. First, Carplay almost certainly has hardware requirements that weren't considered when the gen1 infotainment system was being developed so it's unlikely to meet them. Second, Hyundai would lose a marketing tool to move people to the gen2. Most people are unlikely to buy a '15 and then trade in for a '16 over one feature so Hyundai stands to at least make some money for their dealers by charging a nominal upgrade fee for flashing the system. If you own a gen1 they're probably more interested in getting you to buy a new car.

Not saying it's impossible or that Hyundai would be morally right if that is their logic, but it seems par for the course so to speak.

Between the '15 and '16 it's likely that no hardware will change so there will be no additional programming to be done to offer that software for the '15.

I agree that the Gen 1 probably won't be able to get the update. My bet is that it will be tied to the generation 2 BlueLink platform. Not sure if everyone saw it or not, but Hyundai made a big deal about the new system's expandability and how it will enable them to support future updates, including wearable tech.

If you want to see the video I am referring to, you can see it on here on YouTube.

If you want to jump to the generation 2 BlueLink portion, you can use this link that will jump you to 32 minutes and 40 seconds into the clip.

I get an error trying to click on your link, even tried cut and pasting and same issue.

In one of the other posts on this site, I had pasted what my dealer had said about the CarPlay feature, he said that they had actually had the Genesis trainer from Hyundai in the day I asked my question, and he was basically told that it's coming to the Genesis 2015 but they were going to test it first in the new 2015 Sonata first.

The trainer didn't go in to details but my dealer thinks it's so they can iron out any bugs before giving it to their premium car owners.

Unfortunately, he didn't have a time frame but said it was just a firmware update on the new sonata and Genesis.

I guess that I am not familiar enough with CarPlay to be excited about this. I already have naviagation, I can press the google button and say the name of a POI, I have all of my music copied to the hard drive, I can use Pandora via the USB connection to my phone, and if I hold down the voice command button on the steering wheel, I can talk to Siri instead of Genny to read and write texts. What am I missing here? What will I gain?

Thanks
KMP

Nothing revolutionary given that we already have Siri Eyes Free - but you will see a visual alert when texts come in, for one thing.

Likely a better and more robust future. The more the cars tech is driven by the phone, the greater chance of car aware apps and faster enhancements and new apps. Car manufacturers are generally not good at software development or maintaining platforms that entice third party support. Want to to wait for someone to write BlueLink apps or a car manufacturer update to a bug in the nav software? It also allows a standard UI, which is usually less than optimal in cars.

Once the car and the phone are tightly coupled, the car will be more of an extension of the phone, which is the center of the universe these days. There is no reason to have two tech environments running in the car and the one you use and look at while not driving will be beneficial when driving.

Anybody know if Carplay will interact with the HUD and/or speed limit indicators? I don't have any particular bias toward Apple's map software, it would just be nice to get updated info without paying for new maps. If it won't interact with the HUD that would kill the feature for me though as I really prefer not having the audio on the Nav interrupting music when the HUD is there. I'd hate to have to chose between Apple's decent voice recognition and the OEM HUD compatibility.

Car play is really only a remote screen viewer which lets you do things through your infotainment system up to a certain degree. I seriously doubt it will interact with the hud.

+ 1 - in fact, I think we can safely say with 100% certainty that it will not interact with the HUD!

I would seriously doubt that CarPlay is that integrated in the car. It would make sense in many ways, but do not think there is any standardization among cars on how they display HUD, etc.

I agree with all the replies. I never thought it would be likely, but Carplay compatibility itself seems to be a standard of sorts that could at least theoretically include integration with other systems and I wondered if anyone had any details on the subject.

I think in later versions of hardware, it might be possible to integrate with things like the HUD, but not sure automakers are ready to blend systems or lose control of how things are controlled/displayed in their cars just yet. In the short term, I suspect Carplay will continue to be an add-on that competes or complements the car's own systems - depending how you look at it.
