  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ok... Here's a question.

On a hot day in Florida I left our cat Molly in the car with the motor running and the air on for just a couple of minutes. Upon my return, I found that the mirrors were retracted and the door was locked. No problem - right. After all I had my proximity card key in my wallet as always, so I pressed the door button to unlock...NOTHING! Would not unlock.

I could open the trunk by pressing the trunk button (motorized trunk). I tried locking the trunk with the push button lock feature on the trunk but it just beeped at me. Pressed "close" on the trunk and it closed. Still, the proximity card would not allow me to get into the car!! There is a slim key in the proximity card, but it would not fit in the door slot (have to check that out with the dealer).

What is one to do??

I called the local dealership, but couldn't get past the "press one, press two" robot. Left them a message of which was never returned. Big help there.

Returned to the vehicle to find my fiancé' sitting IN THE CAR! Get this - Molly the cat had stepped on the window lock button, unlocking the windows. Then she went to the back window and briefly stepped on the window down button lowering the window about an inch. Fiance' was able to use a swifter wand to press the window button enough to get her hand in to open the door.

My question is, how would you ever unlock the door otherwise???

First off you need to have the emergency key fixed. Sounds like the cat locked the doors from the inside so why not experiment with your wife in the car playing the role of the cat. You are sure to find out what the car will and won't allow you to do from the outside.

As for unlocking the door in your case, a coat hanger down to the window button would probably be the easiest route as I have done this many times in the past on other cars with success however never tried on the Genesis. You also had access from the trunk through the pass through where you could hook the rear door handle and pull to open once again with a coat hanger.

My car is probably different since I have remote start installed with door unlocking via my smartphone or computer which I have done many times with no issue by the way.

I am quite sure the exterior lock button will not function as anybody would be able to unlock the doors when you are inside a locked running car. The key fob unlock surely works but since you had the card key which does not have an unlock button your only real option was the physical key which did not work.

Do a better job training your cat on how to unlock the door :=) :=) :=)

This happened to me with my '06 Sonata at a car wash (I gave the attendant just the key and kept the fob): It rolled out of the wash fast enough to actuate the door locks because the speed bumper was missing. Before the attendants tried to open it with a coat hangar and tear up the door gaskets, I tried without success to use the fob to unlock the car. My wife drove to the car wash with a spare key. I did get six free washes out of it, though.

@Midnightsun...would unlocking your car from your phone or computer still work when the car is running and locked? Is this something else that you had installed? I have thought about this scenerio since every time i go to o the car wash i see some one going through this. Only a matter of time before it happens to me. I see this so much that i bought a kit from ebay to help this people open their cars called "Big Easy". works like a charm but it wont help me if i cant open my own car....lol

Have only tried locking unlocking when the remote start is used and not when the car was started using the normal route so I cannot definitely answer your question but I am pretty sure it will unlock. Yes it is aftermarket since we do not get bluelink in Canada. This is what I have and yes I can also lock/unlock, start with my apple watch. http://www.dronemobile.com

It looks similar to BlueLink. When you have a chance can you try to see if it can unlock the car when car is on and locked. I don't want to buy it and find out the hard way and expensive way that it doesn't do what i want it to. I'm sure others would want to know too.
Thanks

In regards to Bluelink:
I can state categorically that it shouldn't work as it would constitute a severe security risk--that's why the fob doesn't work.
SCENARIO: A bad carjacking guy who has hacked your hyundai mobile profile walks up to your car with his android phone and opens your car door while you are sitting at a red light. No bueno.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have to get a replacement key cut for my wallet card key. In the meantime, I pulled out one of my traditional key fobs, removed the key and tried to replicate the problem only to find that the key will not even fit in the little slot beneath the door handle... hmmm...

Page 3-11 of the owners manual (mechanical key). The slot is used to pry the trim piece from the door handle using the key. It will then fly off who knows where and be lost. Murphy's Law states it will land centered underneath the car parked next to yours.
The drawing looks like fun. :( I hope I never have to do this in the dark, heck, I hope I never have to do this, period.
