  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Check engine light - gas cap

Ummm....lot's of misinformation here...I suppose that's the nature of the internet BB...

Th2 2011 gas cap has a torque wrench type action where it is turned until you feel/hear the click and then release it, thus indicating the proper torque has been applied. Continued turning simply applies more torque, and the second click you hear will be the destruction of the gas cap internals...

Over tightening the gas cap can compromise the seal as well...follow the instructions applicable to YOUR car and have the cap replaced if it does not seal right....

BTW..."the gas cap must be loose" is dealer service code for "I dunno what's wrong with your car or how to diagnose it, but I reset the silly light. Please leave so we can get back to our domino game...." It is unlikely that your gas cap is the issue...make them show you the trouble codes!

Richard

The code recorded on my invoice the last time around was P0456. The dealer said that they checked all the potentially faulty components and didn't find anything wrong.

I've always turned the cap until it clicks at least once, and I don't think I've ever gone more than two clicks. It's hard to believe that that would have damaged it to the point of failure, especially since some people apparently turn it more than that without harm.

Last post in this thread, probably should walk away, but I can't...

There are two types of torque limiting gas cap being used on cars....The seal on a gas tank cap is typically a static O-ring and the seal can be compromised by over-tightening and deforming the o-ring. This is why auto manufacturers use torque limiting gas caps.

The traditional ratchet style is found on the majority of cars. This is the type described by most posters in this thread, MikeC for example. This type works exaclty as MikeC described. This type explicitly limits the torque applied by slipping when excess torque is applied.

The gas cap used on the 2011 (NOT 2009 or 2010) Genesis has a gas cap similar to those found on some other luxury brands. This is a torque wrench style. Similar to the operation of a torque wrench, it has a spring loaded cam that clicks and allows a slight movement when the proper torque is reached. This type will NOT click again with continued torque application unless you break it. This type does not limit the applied torque. The user is cautioned in the owners manual and on the fuel filler door not to over tighten it.

Well, good luck with your gas cap - I'm not bashing you, just trying to correct a bit of misinformation.

Thanks for the update. I retract my suggestion to use 3 clicks if you have a 2011 or later Genesis.

No worries. You obviously know this well, and your latest post was very informative, especially the part about the change in gas cap mechanisms. That's what the forum is for. Thanks.

Thanks Richard, very informative post. My wife's Camry has the torque wrench type as you describe and I always found it a bit odd to use. I don't fill that car very often, so never got used to it I suppose. I'm just used to the other type like on the 2009 Genny.

Going to replace the gas cap today. Hot weather sends the check engine light to on. 100k miles. should take care of it.
