  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Check your steering wheel.

There is a pattern of steering wheel positioning problems with 2009 and 2010 Genesis sedans. There is a service bulletin for this, and Hyundai is dealing with it. A faulty limit switch is often cited. Dealers have reported that the part can be hard to get, as the problem is wide-spread.

There are both memory issues (auto-return of the wheel to the set position) and the loss of the ability to change the tilt angle and the wheel distance to the driver.

My Genny is going in next week for this problem and hopefully it will be resolved.

Not bitchin, BTW, just a heads-up to other owners.

Mine (2010 3.8 build date Nov 09) has been sort of flaky - often doesn't return to previous position. I'll have it looked at when it goes in for next service in a couple of weeks. Do you know the TSB number by any chance?

The part is on Nation wide back order according to my dealer service department. A 4 week wait so far for me. Maybe next week says the dealer.

Thread I opened stating my experience http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=5675

hmmph...u know I was wondering why my steering wheel wasn't moving up/away when I know I have the option checked in the Drivers Information and Command center.

Thanks for the heads up, I thought I was just doing something wrong in the settings :)

Mine seems to return to saved position when starting the car. But it sure seems like the tilt angle doesn't have very much upwards adjustment. I've got the driver's seat adjusted to be fairly low, but I still can't adjust the wheel up enough so that it isn't partially blocking the gauges. Has anybody had a problem with the upper limit the wheel can be raised to that the dealer fixed, or is this just a limitation?

Jkohn, you just described the problem. The fix is replacing the tilt switch.
GET in line.;)

Mine finally gave up the ghost 3 weeks ago. Took it in to the dealer on a Thursday. Told them about the TSB. They looked at the tilt/telescope switch...verified that it indeed did not work...that it was covered by the warranty...and said "we'll have the part in Monday or Tuesday next week (that was 2 Monday's ago now!) Standard line when I call them to check on the status is, "We should have the part next week".

You'd think that Hyundai Service would at least have the courtesy (and the cajones) to say, "I'm sorry, this part is on National back order and we might not get this for several weeks. I will call and update you every "X" days to keep you informed. Matter of fact, because we value you as a loyal customer, I'll provide a free oil change at your next service interval to make up for the inconvenience we've caused."

Even more disappointing is that the TSB has been out for quite some time. You'd think that Hyundai would have ramped up production on the switches to have them available.

I'm not holding my breath on that free oil change.

Thanks!

I don't see why there is such a delay in getting new switches.

I phoned my dealer on Tuesday and made a Saturday appointment for an oil change and gave them the TSB number from this website for the tilt/telescope memory problem.

When I arrived today they had the parts ready and waiting and the repair was done under warranty during the oil change.

Just another great experience from my Langley, B.C. Dealer.

Dealer just told me over a month for the limit switch for the steering wheel, same story as others "national backorder". Right now they are looking into disabling the "easy exit" or whatever you call it. They claim it can't be done on non-navigation models, but I find that odd. Mine still goes up and down fine, just never returns to the right position.

OK, it went back to the dealer today and I was told that the limit switch was defective and that the part is on back-order and it would be a month.

That's not a good mark for Hyundai. If the steering wheel is stuck in a dangerous position (does not clear your legs or you cannot see the instrument display) that's a looooong wait! Also, with more than one driver it can be a serious issue. I tried to "muscle" the position of the steering wheel but it won't budge.

Still loving the car, but this is a head-scratcher. Is Hyundai working too hard on the next level up (ALA THE EQUUS) before sorting out the Genesis?

After waiting over 4 weeks for parts my 2010 Gen was at the dealership yesterday for the limit switch replacement. After approx and hour and the dash of my car still torn apart the service manager tells me my car is a later build (maybe BS) and it will require changing out the steering column. He seened to think he could have the necessary parts within a day. I called today and still no replacement steering column. They did give me a Sonata loaner but I am not very happy having a 3 1/2 month old car w/3600 miles torn apart sitting at the dealership. BTW the vehicle was purchased mid April and had 6 miles on the odm. I am wondering if the later build is BS and they broke something requiring the steering column replacement.

I made an appointment for this limit switch to be swapped out. My dealer then called me and told me it would take 2-1/2 hours (initially the bulletin said 45 minutes) and that if they did the change, the steering wheel would no longer be part of the memory system, and would have to be adjusted manually. So of course, since I'm not having any (serious) problems (sometimes the wheel returns to the wrong vertical position), I decided not to take it in. Has anyone else heard this? Has anyone had the work done and does the steering wheel memory still work? 2010 Genesis.

My tilt switch on '11 was replaced at 3500 miles.

My tilt switch on 2010 3.8 was replaced this June. It had stopped working a few months before this, but June was my first opportunity to get it looked at.

Had the same problem with my 10'. Brought the car to the dealer, they had the part, fixed it in under an hour. It works fine with the memory settings.

Had to take mine (2010 V6 Premier) in twice for the problem in the first year, but now 30,000 miles later there has been no recurrence.

Wow... something seems really wrong with their statement to you. My first impression was that they're planning to replace the unit with a non-Gen switch assy -thus the reason for it no longer being "part of the memory system". ...and maybe almost 4 times the allocated time required -since they'd have to rewire something to make it work!

A fix that downgrades functionality is no fix at all. I don't think I would have reacted as calmly to their "offer".

My 10' 3.8 had the tilt telescope module replaced at 18k. Previous owner had this done. Ever since I have owned it the steering wheel settings will not save. Had it in for oil change and told them about the problem. Said they had seen this before but didn't know how to fix it. Anyone had module replaced but settings wouldn't save? If so how did dealer fix it.

For those above that have a 10' with new module and are able to save settings what engine / package do you have? I'm thinking it might have to do with the software between tech and non tech.
